A rare find...

I'm a bit of a nerd and get picky when it comes to purchasing lenses in the way of serial numbers. This is because 2 lenses with drastically different serial numbers give a unique look, to me. Nikon is known to produce a run of a lens, stop production and begin another run beginning with a different serial number. Nikon Lens Versions and Serial Nos lists all the known serial numbers of Nikon lenses. This post deals with the 135mm 2.0 DC. I was in the market for a second copy recently and browsed many japanese sellers on ebay (japanese generally take excellent care of their gear in my experience). After days of looking for the right condition/pricepoint, I noticed a lens with the serial# 500001. This indicates the first lens of the 4th and final run of which 23,187 known copies were produced. I know nothing of it's history, but I paid about 7 for it. A bit of a holy grail for me. Stunningly mint as though it had been mounted once to ensure proper function. What are the chances. Introduced in 1995, this is one of the oldest lenses to still have been in production and available on the Nikon website until just a few months ago. Have you had any rare/special encounters with equipment?

I had been on the fence about getting this lens for years. Partly because there are so few high quality examples of it's many claimed qualities. And since I shoot mostly street portraits, I was very interested in what a portrait would look like with this lens. So I took the dive and got it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, since most of the reviews either praised it for sharpness (many claimed it very sharp wide open) or complained of lack of sharpness wide open and front focusing. My feeling was that it seemed to be one of those lenses which takes lots of practice and playing around with to understand and get the best out of. I got mine from a japanese seller on ebay. It was used, but in immaculate, like new condition. This is one reason I don't see any reason to buy new anymore. I basically got a new lens and saved $500. I couldn't tell that it had been mounted. Anyways, when I got it, I mounted it to my D300 and took some test shots around the yard, my first impression was how smooth and pleasantly fast the focusing was. Then I noticed what appeard to be front focusing, wide open. I made some fine tune adjustments and that didn't help much. I set fine tuning to +15 and left it, went out for real world street portraits and it worked beautifully. Not complaints. I think the combination of focal length, combined with wide aperture makes the lens very, very tricky to work with for certain things, but doesnt necessarily mean the lens is soft or defective. For portraits and street photography, I can say mine performed amazingly. And it is quite sharp wide open. Not quite as sharp as the 85mm 1.4D, which is what I use for much of my portraits, but darn close. I really think this lens can absolutely shine in the hands of a very patient and observative photographer. The build quality of the lens is absolutly amazing. Similar to the 85 1.4D, but much heavier, robust, which I like. It's really an engineering masterpiece and work of art in one. My new favorite lens, i'm looking forward to talking more shots with it. It's a poorly understood gem, introduced in 1995 and oddly is one of the oldest D lenses STILL in production (one of the oldest lenses, period) and available on the Nikon website, along with the 50mm 1.4D lenses. I believe all other D lenses have been discontinued and replaced with G lenses. I can say that this lens is AMAZING, but you cannot shoot and expect amazing results right away. One must get to know how to use it. I like the bokeh a tad better than the 85, but they're different. It's produces such good results as a normal lens, that I haven't used the Defocus Control feature yet. Here's a few examples of the The DC-NIKKOR 135mm f/2D, all shot wide open:

Wow "Voice of Reason". Never in this thread did I initiate any reference of a comparison of image quality between the K-1 and ANY other camera. I don't get in to that. I think it wise to give you a reason behind this while i'm here. Because image quality from a scientific perspective, whether it be iso performance, dynamic range, etc, etc, etc may not be as important as another feature(s) of a camera which one uses. Someone else brought up a comparison between the D810 and the K-1. I had a simple response and was not getting in to that topic. It is simply irrelevant to me. I'd also like to say that i'm not complaining about the K-1. I don't own it and never used it. So other than the specs available to the public and a few raw photo conversions I have seen. I'm not in a position to complain. Thirdly, I do own pentax equipment. Many lenses and film cameras and may or may not be mounted to a modern dslr. I have owned the k-x and k-5 when they were just released and everyone was raving about them just as proud owners of the K-1 are now. Please read carefully and think carefully if possible, before you put words in my mouth. Lastly, even though it may be irrelevant, I believe that many people never come close to bringing out or even using the full potential of their camera. If one can take an underexposed photo with the K-1 at an extremely high iso and be able to process it so that it looks fantastic without painfully obvious smearing from noise reduction and balance the highlights to the shadows so that it appears very natural, then they exhibit mastery in that sense. For me, the most important thing is mastering the raw file any specific camera produces. Understanding how to manipulate every element, from highlights to darks, white balance, controlling the balance of colors for each specific photo. It took me thousands and thousands of hours and even more time editing raw files from my 9 year old dslr to master not only the functionality of the camera as I use it, but mastering the raw file as well. And i'm not talking about mastering something after taking an extended class for photoshop or self defense. Mastering in the sense that Bruce Lee mastered the Martial Arts (or something like that). I'm only making that reference because I feel that so many people part with a thing without ever realizing how much more they could do with it. Please have a look at my photos. Many of which were taken with pentax dslr's!!

Shadow correction applied to raw files?

I agree with JohnBee. As I understand, adjustments are read by compatible software. The software must first have the ability to translate the specific raw data. I'm not sure how to be certain of this. It would be of great concern that the software does an accurate job of translating the data, assuming the screen is adjusted properly. Some of the explanations here require multiple reads for me, but the answer is fairly simple I believe. I personally find it easiest to shoot in aperture priority, especially for street shooting, where brightness and metering is constantly changing. I get the shot I want, making sure exposure is not too far off (sometimes it takes a few shots) and if there's any adjustments needed, I do it in post processing with lightroom without ANY camera adjustments applied. This, I find is the easiest way. But getting a shot that is not too washed out is key, everything else is easily managable in post. It would be helpful to mention that I personally don't like what any of my in camera adjustments do to my photos in most cases (unless i'm dealing with a hopefully dark scene), because I can get better exposure, contrast, highlights, etc. in post. Even with under/overexposed scenes with washed out areas. You'd be surprised at what is salvagable using the right sequence of adjustments. This has come from a couple years and many hours of trial and error using adobe product.

Just a few of my favorite shots from the past month or so. Some are portraits and some are street shots taken without permission. Maybe you can tell which is which.

Johnny, AKA "The Can Man" isn't Homeless, but he spends several hours a day, 365 days a year (weather permitting), collecting aluminum cans anywhere he can find them. He can make up to $200 a week. He uses an old shopping cart most of the time. I've seen him while heading downtown on my bike. His cart can be piled 6 feet high. He has routes he takes that have produced the highest payout. "I gotta be careful on these streets because sometimes people try to follow me and steal my cans, take what I have". Johnny is a spiritual, peace loving guy, keeps to himself, but if he can trust you, he's got a lot of good things to say. I don't think I've met anyone like him and I always look forward to seeing him around. He was hesitant at first about having his photo taken for fear of what people would think if they knew what he did for a living. Well we all sell Cans in one form or another :)

Is it "Canon or Nikon" or nothing?

I never feel such pressure. The reason I got a pentax is because I spent countless hours comparing features of different models and features that were also BRAND specific. People, orgranizations and industries may have their own reasons for preferring canon or nikon, but to me, part of what makes a photographer is the extent to which he understands and applies all the features of a specific camera to his own work. I've met fellow "photographers" while out on the street who did not know about focus points and that you can adjust them. Of course they were using a popular brand, something that is easily attainable because of marketing. To give in to pressure is to betray the artist in you, the art of photography, assuming you're shooting a camera because of the trend and not for your own unique reasons. The more you know about a device, the better you can apply it. I have a K-x because of lens back compatibility, in camera pixel correction, uses AA batteries and has a fantastic sensor. I have a Nikon D90 and D300 because of the way Nikons render micro contrast. It's the best i've seen. They also have great viewfinders, durable shutters and lots of focus points which are easy to see in the viewfinder. The D300 is highly cutomizable and shoots in compressed and uncompressed 12 and 14 bit raw and TIFF. Every brand has a good camera. If one shoots Canon because the herd does, one is missing out and likely to continue that kind of behavior in other areas his life.

A new set of random people portraits from the last couple weeks or so. This is a part of a project i'm working on and mostly for fun. The idea behind my portraits is to capture the unique, inherent qualities from each person. Those things which cannot be given, taken away or altered through makeup, clothing, fasion or anything else. Partly because of this, I believe in altering the image as little as possible. The idea is to capture the person, as they are, out and about in a relaxed setting. This is the beauty of my photography. I learn my equipment, shoot and do as little editing as possible. Even when shooting in raw, which I almost always do, I find that some shots turn out to have near perfect exposure, plenty of color and contrast, which probably has a lot to do with the lenses I use. I do not use flash for these shots. Everything is with the k-x, k-5 and natural light. Thanks for looking!
