On June 4th I was very humbled and excited to find out I had made it to round two. My head began swimming with possible shots that fit the many possible themes. I am more of a portrait photographer, mostly children and pets, so my natural inclination was to the "innocent" theme line ( especially since on June 4th our family was blessed with a second grandchild, yes it was a very good day). But I also looked at this as an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and challenge myself. I began researching local places that fit various combinations of theme words. It was during this time that I was told about a local "multi-millionaire." He is an AmericanStandardbred harness race horse and was described as being "powerful, tough, and fast" and in those words my theme began to form. Early one morning I headed to the local track (a national historic landmark) where the trotters, including Mr.Millionaire, exercise and train. Trotters exercise or "jog" clockwise, then if they are scheduled for training they turn around and go a mile (2 laps) counter clockwise at full speed around the track. I took a lot of pictures(including Mr.Millionaire) and many of them were good, but after culling through them, to me they did not convey the powerful motion that I was going for. The"power" was there, but I didn't feel the motion. One of the last pictures I took that morning had a slight blur because I had inadvertently moved the camera trying to focus. Although the horse was blurred, the impression of movement I was looking for was there. I realized needed to learn to pan...a technique I have never done. After reading many articles and watching many videos about panning, I went back to the track. I set myself up and practiced panning on the early, slower moving horses and certainly got a lot of blurred motion. It was difficult to find a focal point..the horse, the sulky or the driver? I kept at it and when Mr. Millionaire came out, I felt ready to give a good try. Two laps around, two good chances of getting the shot I envisioned. After his morning run, I began packing up. I had just put my camera in the bag when I saw a driver turn a young, smaller horse around and begin to race down the track at full throttle. She was very fast and with each stride she looked as if she was flying over the track. I quickly grabbed the camera and was able to get two shots off before the driver slowed her back into a jog. So the picture you see, is not the powerful motion and Mr. Millionaire that I set out to capture, but of very fast motion and a pretty little filly who thinks she can fly. |

My family and I attended the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg. It was very hot with a threat of an afternoon/evening thunderstorm in the forecast each day. On the third day, during the reenactment of Pickett's charge, very dark and ominous storm clouds gathered. Fortunately the rain and lightning held off until after the reenactment. We returned to our campground and when the rain let up a bit, we went up to the area of the battlefield known as the "Highwater" mark where the Confederate line breached the Union line. The clouds were still very dark and heavy, with a little light rain falling. As I wandered along Hancock Ave. I approached a photgrapher. He had his camera mounted on a tripod (with a rain cover) and was using a neutral density filter/long exposure to capture the swiflty moving low cloud cover. I said "Hi", he looked and then grumbled at me. I said "Clouds are really moving," he grumbled again. I wished him luck with his shooting, and he grumbled something back at me as I walked away. I chose to go in the opposit direction of where he was standing. I walked to the highwater mark area. As I came up to a row of cannons, the sun suddenly broke through the heavy clouds, producing an absolutely stunning sunset and with an interesting refelction on this one cannon. This lasted for only a few moments, but it was pretty spectacular. I suppose I should thank the grumpy photographer, as had he been the least bit friendly, I would have missed this shot.

Thank you.

The power of Chamberlain’s words still echo at Gettysburg. Something does remain here on the battlefield. Something is felt when looking over the silent landscape. I feel very fortunate to have been able to capture one small moment.
Thank you, it was a stunning, but brief sunset.
Thank you very much. The light reflecting on the cannon lasted but a few moments, I was able to get two shots off before it disappeared. The sunset lingered for a few more moments before the light changed again.

Took this one a few years ago. She was very busy "redecorating" the inside of her new home with bits of straw, grass and string.

Thank you for the nomination. It was one of those hastily made decisions, in between raindrops, to head over to the battlefield that evening and I just grabbed the camera leaving the rest of my gear behind.
This sunset and sky lasted just a moment...the other pictures I took that evening was of a rainbow over the Pennsylvania monument taken just after this picture, the sky still has some purple coloring, but isn't nearly as dramatic.
Thank you very much for the nomination. It was the light reflecting from the cannon that caught my eye as the sun started to come through the clouds.

Tucked in one of the smaller streets in Montmartre, Paris is this piece of street art, which had a very caribbean feel. The mural incorporated the buildings exposed brick facade, with vine leaves snaking around the edge. My son in law and his best friend thought this was a great spot to take a break from our long day of sight seeing. |
