I have read the other post below about tripods none mentioned sports. I shoot slot of baseball from h.s. To professional baseball. I also have my portrait business and my fine art line. I need something that can support all this work.

My old girls is just getting to worn out. She is more than 30yrs old (Verbatiam purchases at a garage sale by my dad when I was 6).

I like the height 60"
I like the legs nice aluminum with plastic lOcks.
I like the positioning to an extent, it does not have degree position locks.(which also is s dislike)
I like the weight but would prefer lighter if possible.

I dislike the head, it doesn't move all that free never did, and wobbles when panning for a fast action shot.
I dislike the bulkyness

I want the likes and a level, bag, maybe counter weights and a decent head or heads for my purposes.

I also want some significant lOngevity.

Budgets is $150.00 - $300.00. Total with head. If possible.

Uninterested/motivated clients what to do?

Hello,

Over the weekend I had a maternity client (7mos.) expecting. She had been extremley eager to book the session and was excited about locations and outfits and ideas. However three days leading up to the shoot she develops back pain, expected for pregnant mom. She was offered the convienece of rebooking, without penalty. I had a last minute interest for that day! She opted to continue with the booking and showed up to the session. She brought none of the outfits she had discussed, none of the props she had discussed, and none of the punctuality that she had over the phone and in person consult! My scouting for the location was now wasted as I was not able to invorpetate my artistic plans and tones with background and clothing options etc.... Furthermore my spur of the moment plans were met with haste due to her non motivated attitude and pain. The images produced are nothing to be proud of! Quality wise they are perfect, but her demeanor shows in a big way, fake laughs, smiles, and un natural poses.

The client likes them, I hate them, they in now way will wow! Potential clients, in fact they might even deter future clients. What on earth do I do???

Ideas to combat this in the future?

Hello,

I am looking to buy a quality diffuser for my Pentax AF-360FGZ. Any tips/suggestions in choosing one? Or recommendations? Looking for a way to soften the flash for portraits in low, low light with generally no other light source?

Pricing, I'm new to the portrait arena. Invested in some newer and updated equipment for this specific job. With little to no portfolio for portraits my "hobby" clients never signed a release. So here is the question... Prices too high to get calls at first, so I kept lowering to the point I got a few calls. Unfortunately one client/ caller eluded my prices were too low and she thought there was a hidden catch or I was not serious. Furthermore, I'm way way way below local competition to the point it may be a joke or a hamper to the industry. Am I going about this wrong? All I want is to start shooting clients and be happy! Also local photogs have turned me down for internships for experience and practice, gettin frustrated.

No the op has not I have turned down three weddings. Have one on the line for a September wedding outdoors... I'm thinking I need more detail but with the church and low light issue a moot point I might accept that wedding. In mean time I've been learning my new photoshop cs5 and lightroom software to see what else I can do above and beyond "uncle Joe".

Furthermore as offended as I was with the family reunion had a compromise fallen in say the 6-700.00 I would have done it. Possibly even lower just for the 55 families buisness exposure. The client would not budge off the $200.00. Ohh well...

Heard back from prospective client "I'm sorry we can't afford anymore than $200.00. We have a budget of just under $7,000.00 for two days, two catered meals, and several events.". Wow! un-real expectations... Maybe it's because I'm new!

MRRiley, thanks just ordered it...

Here is my situation. Buddy calls says he knows a friend looking for a photog. I email potential client. Family Reunion 140-160 guests all ages, 55 families and 8-9 generations! A two hour shoot indoor and outdoor. Client wants posed family portraits of entire group and individual branches or generations. Clients is expecting prints in the size of 5x7 or 8x10! (again for 140-160 people....ugh problem!). Aldo client is expecting photo cd of all shots for $5.00! With printing release. As I start gathering more info and pricing stuff together, I learn other photographer canclef after six months. I state there is no way I can do cd at $5 with release and explain why.

She stated limited budget and yada yada... So magic question what was other photog charging she comes back with sit down folks.... $175.00 plus $5 for CDs!

I was just about to send her my time fee of $200.00

My compromise was 30 minutes of shooting, just family portraits two 8x10's per family. And explained how people would look like ants. Also with no facial recognition when hung on wall. At $20.00 half my normal price due to volume.

Total with taxes $1,510.00. Broke down to $27.46 per family with
Cd without printing rights.

No client response. I thought that was dirt cheap!

Unfotunatley so does the term "photo release". Do clients really expect this in the digital age am bartering with a client on this issue the gig 140-160 people all ages 55 families at a reunion. Two hours. Client wants indoor and outdoor candids. She also wants family group shot whole family then individual branches 8 or 9. She also wants print sizes to be 5x7 or 8x10. (too small for the portraits she wants) but won't go larger than 8x10. And she wants photo release on cd/DVD for $5.00 per! I need clients can't really afford to turn away cash but can't do this at these terms. Idk really what to suggest to her or how to explain the reason for the cost of prints CDs and why I can't do photo releases. I know it will come across as me being greedy!

So... Let the learning curve begin when it arrives! Will it come with instructions. The sales rep was pushing two books that he referred to as "training manuals". I have been advertising on social networks and in a local service newspaper for a few months now. I am branching out from my nature and sports fields into portraiture. Now that I've decided to go from free hobby portraits to paid professional portraits the phone has stopped ringing, for portraits anyway. I have turned down three weddings so far and have a fourth on the line. Do I with no wedding experience keep turning down or bite the bullet and take the job?

That may just work out even better given my options, provided the department can fit the bill. Thank you. I don't stand to make a huge profit but I'm not going to loose money either. After our meeting I will present options A and B to see what they can afford.

Exactly, warm and fuzzy, the problem I guess is if i shoot an officer talking to the general public IE person on the street or in a park. Will web site viewers see it as friendly? Or that the police are harassing people? They deptartment has not given much reason for them contacting me, other than they want to be more accesable and community oriented. So my guess is maybe they have had some pr issues latley.

They do youth community Police academy, I will be attending a couple of those thus week. I will also be meeting the chief and touring the police dept. They are wanting to revamp their image to a more friendly and open atmosphere. They want the community to reach out more and be more proactive in crime prevention by promoting awareness. Just not a whole lot of shoot ideas are presenting themselves in my head. My pre game plan so to speak is not developing.

Thanks guys, and of course online legal advice isn't wise. Just getting the basics before calling the attorney this week, for a consult. Now I can call insurance company first. Probably also contact the SBA in my state. I have avoided the buisness steps because of these decisions, ohh well no time like the present.

The assignment to review their website and come up with photo ideas that display a community based police department... Their website primarily shows officers in full uniform in standard attention stance, and ALOT of tactical training shots. I've google searched tons of pd websites and all are pretty much the same after the same. Attempting to think outside the box but is outside the box still professional? Thoughts?

Based in Illinois going from hobby photographer and making it an official buisness. I see that sole proprietorship is the most common but an LLC will protect personal assets you may have, car, home, family members assets... What do most of you classify your buisness as? Any advice on one or the other?

Ok so I know I won't freeze movement at 1/180 but it was the only way my camera was not under exposing my shots at that time of night with those conditions. I ideally want 1/2000 or 1/4000 but as you see way underexposed. The -1 exposure comp I didn't realize it was set that way that was my bad. How can I freeze the movement under these conditions and not be underexposed.

Also the SR examples were trashed sorry.

First image Test1 was a test shot pre game from photo pit next to the dugout on firstbase side. I am not sure why it is so underexposed. Image specs. Manual mode, 1/4000 F2.8 @200mm ISO 1600 AWB Cloudy sRGB.

Second image QCHit, Obviously i want the bat frozen and the ball frozen on the bat, pretty bumed i missed this shot. Image specs. Av Mode, f3.5 1/180 +/- -1.0 AFC ISO 800 AWB cloudy.

Third Image QCswing TAv Mode +/- -1.0 AFC f3.5 1/500 ISO 1600 AWB CLoudy, Pretty happy with this shot but I was still working with overcast daylight.

Fourth Image, QCopenk, TAv Mode +/- -1.0 AFC 1/350 ISO 1600 AWB CLoudy.

just a small sample of the images I took, they have not been post processed.
