Light Meter Recommendations

Thanks guys, I wish to measure ambient light primarily however, I would also like to learn to measure flash as well. I've had a look at all the recommendations here. I like the idea of buying a vintage unit as I'm into recycling but I see the
Gossen Luna Pro SBC requires several accessories for complete functionality and I'm wondering how difficult these will be to locate. Ebay has a second hand Sekonic L-758 which I've added to my watch list. The listing had a run down of 15 features offered by this thing and I could only recognize two! Cheers!

First Roll Through 645d Disapointing

Thanks for your comments. Honestly, and I'm not making excuses, I think the film was over processed. Although I didn't use a grey card, I later remembered I did bracket each frame, yet each neg was profoundly lacking in density. I'm having another go this weekend and will use a grey card and get the film processed elsewhere. In the meantime, I have been shooting with my 67 and the results have been beautiful. (processed elsewhere of course) Cheers

The lab I spoke to who everyone recommended said they would produce a 200 meg scan. They charge $55 each and that includes cleaning up (dust etc.) and colour and density balancing. Having said that Tuco, I get the feeling you aren't confident I'm going to get better results with the 67 over the D3X.

I've had extensive experience with film but not for several years. I generally shoot with a Nikon D3x and make prints A3, A1 and AO which I sell for really good money all around the world. Always looking for more detail, but not wanting to get into a 645D or Hassleblad HD system at this stage, I bought a 67 and a 645 with a variety of lenses to see if I could get a higher level of detail when I compare a AO print made with a 67 or a 645n with one made by a D3x.
I'm almost certain that if the light meter on the 645 was correct, then the film has been over processed in the case under discussion. The white marks are almost certainly muck on the negs so I'm wondering if this guy down the road knows what he's doing!
Anyhow tomorrow. I'm shooting in the studio under monoblocs with the D3x and the 67 shooting an identical static object. I will be doing identical exposures and then will get the film processed at a prolab and a high quality scan done of one neg. Then I will have two A1 prints made and see what the results are like. If the 67 is better, I may buy more bodies & lenses to kit myself out, if not, I'll buy into the 645 D system at a later stage.
That's where I'm at, at the moment. If anyone has compared these two cameras side by side, I'd be VERY interested in hearing from you. Cheers

Thanks for these suggestions guys. I did actually shoot each frame sequencially at -1, 0 and +1. I also shot the same scene with my digital camera and the results were perfect. It may be the lab.
Any ideas on the white squiggly lines and dots on the film. From memory, I seem to remember this being a film processing issue too.
I didn't use the lab I normally use but a 1 hour guy down the road. I'm really starting to wonder if the $5.00 I saved in the process may be the problem.

I have just got a roll of 400 ASA colour film through the 645N that I recently purchased back from the lab and the results aren't encouraging.

The shots are really thin and flat you can tell from the negs that there is no density. I from metered the camera and I'm sure the needle was dead in the middle. The shots were lit naturally.
There is also white sqiggly marks on the prints and dots which look like damage to the film emuslsion. Could this be dust?
Anyone out there got any thoughts? After this and $30 for processing and proofing I'm ready to go running back to my digital camera in a hurry!

645n with monoblocs

Thanks Tuco, this looks like a neat little unit. I assume it is pretty simple to use. Would I be correct in assuming that a Sekonic light meter for instance would do both flash and general light metering functions. If so, I might just wait until I can afford one and use my DSLR in the meantime.

Thanks guys, I probably will buy a meter eventually but like Gene said, they aren't cheap. I anticipate compensating about a third of a stop each way so hopefully that will accomodate any variances.
By the way, a beautiful P67 and a metered prism also arrived this week. As I will be using both of these cameras on monopods and tripod, the looked up the refective Markins quick release plates and yes, they also wanted over $50 each plus postage to Australia, plus the fact that they recommend two plates for the 645D, I was up for well over $200.00.
Just out of curiousity, I tried the Markins plate P300U from my D3x and it works perfectly on both bodies.

645n with monoblocs

My 645n arrived today all the way from Richmond, Virginia. I'm dying to try it out in my studio using a pair of remotely controlled monoblocs together with softboxes for a bit of portraiture.
A quick question here though, I don't have a light meter. Can I just take a few shots with my DSLR first to get the flash outputs/camera exposure ok and then just dial up the same exposure on the 645n?
If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd be interested to hear them.

On/Of switch on prism problem

Hi Guys,

Just received a penta prism for my P67 which arrived from KEH today. The funny little on/off switch seems to be stuck in the middle position and cannot be located on "ON' or 'OFF' as far as I can tell. Can anyone tell me, am I doing something wrong? I don't have a lens to put on this body yet. The battery light is coming on when I press the test button so I assume the battery is OK.
The light metre indicator is inactive at the bottom of the meter window

Any advice will be gratefully received.

I've just been advised by this forum that 67 lenses cannot be used on a 645 without serious vignetting issues, are you saying this isn't the case?

Hi Guys,

I've just purchased a Pentax 67 in excellent condition and I was just wondering if I can use my 645 lenses on this body and if so what the results are like.
I've been looking for a 645 to 67 adapter on Ebay but had no luck. Does anyone know a source for such a thing?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this information. Cheers.

Quality of scanned 120 negs.

Thanks Nester, I've really learned something here.. I see the neg scanners are pretty cheap, it makes me wonder how the pro labs can charge what they do, unless I'm missing something.
Based on what you have told me here, I realize I'm going to need a pretty big scan if I intend to enlarge to the biggest size I sell which is AO.
I'm interested to see how the resolution compares with the files from my Nikon D3x. I imagine the scans will be more contrasty but hopefully, I'll be able to tweek that in P.S.
Thanks again for taking the time to explain the basics, I appreciate it. C

Hi Guys,

I've just bought a 645 n kit and I'm intending on gettings the negs high qualityscanned at a pro lab for load up onto Photoshop.
I don't understand the scan process. If you scan a neg does that mean you have a negative image up in Photoshop? If so, how do you convert it to a positive image?
Secondly, does anyone have any thought on how A3, A1 and AO sized prints made from these scans will look resolution wise when compared to shots taken with a Nikon D3x?
I'm using Ilford Delta 100.
Excuse my ignorance, I'm new to the hybrid game. Thanks Chris

645 Film camera. Which model?

I'm thinking of buying a 645 film camera with a 75mm 2.8 lens to have a play around on. I'm not too familiar with the system and was wondering if there is a lot of difference between the 645 the N and the NII?
All of my 645 lenses are manual focus so an auto focus facility isn't important.

One other question, how does this camera perform hand held for natural light portraiture?

Any advice anyone can offer me will be gratefully received. Cheers.

Thanks guys. Sounds like a better plan. I can't even find the alternative available for sale. I'm assuming of course, that a P67 to Nikon adapter is available as I haven't actually bought a 645D yet so I intend using this 400mm on my Nikon D3X. Does anyone know if a universal tripod ring is available? I wouldn't mind getting one for my A* 300MM.
