I would prefer the color version since its dry earth tones make it appear more sad and lonely.
But I also have the same impressions as the others before... contrast and sharpness seems to be lower in the color picture. Especially more sharpness would add to it, I guess.

Your EXIF info of interest is "-2.oEV".
"EV" stands for exposure value and you can set it on your camera to underexpose (below zero) or overexpose (above zero) your images on purpose.
This means you underexposed the image shown by 2 full f-stops!
In other words you underexpose your images by a four times too fast exposure time.
Solution: simply push the exposure correction button (the "+/-" button on the top right) and regulate the value to "0.0").
Hope this works...

Great photos... thanks for sharing them.
Although I agree that the last shot is very nice my favorite would nevertheles be the first one: great colors and scene!

I really like the atmosphere of your photo!
(higher sharpness wouldn't necessarily add to it, I guess)
My only first minor criticism: For me there is a little too much sky on top of the mast & wires... so I would crop it slightly differently.
Apart from that, very nice image and thanks for sharing.

The update should not affect your personal camera settings. Mine were always unchanged.I also find the instructions for the update pretty detailed so Pentax would tell you to reset what's necessary... so here you shouldn't worry.
Interesting. I had a minor correction on my Tamron 17-50 (-2 to -3). Now I checked and it seems to have vanished ! So I now do have a properly working autofocus with both pentax lenses and the Tamron :).

I just came across a Vivitar lens 70-210mm f/4 with autofocus....
But I couldn't find a review on this particular lens, neither in this forum nor elsewhere.
I found some similar lenses via wikipedia and other sources:
Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8 (re-labeled Sigma)
Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8-4.0
Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8-4.0 APO
Vivitar 70-210mm f/4.5-5.6
... but none of them exactly fits.
Does someone know the lens I mention?
Would be great to have an idea whethor not its worth to buy it...
Thanks a lot.

The K-5 is my first pentax camera, so I did not decide based on a particular affections for this brand... and I absolutely don't see the K-5 as a failure.
Both issues mentioned are solvable and are minor in comparison to the camera's great capabilities!

Pros | very affordable, nice built quality, all shoting modes necessary, goood handling Cons | (battery needed) Rating | 9 Price (U.S. Dollars) | 45 Years Owned | 0.5 | I can recommend this camera: Yes Value, Features, Performance & Size
In contrast to the popular ME/ ME Super the 'A' models support the 'A' setting aperture mode.. which can be quite nice. Camera Review
Great manual kamera to play around. Allows all important shooting modes (Tv, Av, ...) and gives a nice retro-fun feeling.
I used it very rarely but sometimes I just like looking through a full format view finder :).

I do agree with this opinion!
There clearly is a notable difference both in handling and the resulting images.
So answering to the (slightly modified) thread question: Yes you will see a clear difference of the resulting images, at least in most situations.
But: What I wanted to say in my earlier post is just that the kit lens might not be able to fully compete with what you call a 'good lens', but it suffices for certain aims nevertheless.
There is a difference between the same image beeing shot with the kit lens and a very good prime, but don't image it to be a astronomical difference dividing mobil phone-like photos from super pro-like photos!

I agree with most posts made so far.
1) If you do not intend to make a lot of large scale prints than the little extra sharpness of 'good lenses' won't add much to your images.
2)
Me too I would say that this is the issue that at least I really miss about the normal kit lens! Having a fast zoom (or fast primes) gives you a lot of extra possibilities for shooting...
3)
Image wise I think you already have a good lens with your M-50mm. Only not the most convenient one regarding the missing 'A' setting (and possibly AF).
Finally (to contradict my own post)... I can't deny that having a nice new lens can be a very motivating factor...:)

Nice images!
My favorites would be #1-#3 ... all of which look overdone, but this adds to it!
Only the last shot should either be treated more or less. Looking at it I am not sure whether it's overdone or not or where the post processing is heading to...
Thanks for sharing!

I really do like the background and the bokeh of the tree parts...
It appears more interesting too me than many typical bird shots, because it is not 'simply' one close bird in the middle! :)

I somehow liked #4 the most... maybe because it is not a 'standart' bee shot :).
The perspective appeared more interesting to me.
