Picasa 3 loses EXIF data

It's an issue with the desktop application. Google is aware of this issue and has yet to fix it. It's still outstanding.

Google Groups

It seems that any of us using Picasa have since moved on for various reasons. Such as the software bugs that have been outstanding for nearly two years. Also, Google's TOS for the Picasa service are very onerous. Like Facebook, Google claims non-exclusive rights to your creation in perpetuity. SmugMug, 500px and Flickr do not claim rights to your content. In fact they go out of their way to say that you own your creations.

However, I do still recommend Picasa to family and friends. Odds are they are shooting in JPG, don't care about EXIF or the rights to their photos. Picasa is a fantastic application for someone who needs to manage family photos and put them on the web for others to see.

Please provide a source for the comic.

This was created by Randall Munroe of http://xkcd.com

Now I have that off my mind; This is great.

I wonder if the baby boomer parents established this culture because maybe there was no American identity when it came to Christmas. When I listened to many of these songs, they seems to set social norms for how and what you should do this time of year.

From what I understand the European Christians were divided (still are in many respects) but more so then. The devide even split demoninations based on which region of Europe the family was from. So everyone's idea of Christams was different. In an effort to develop a national identity cultural norms were created, think Norman Rockwell.

Soggy?!?... *Looks outside*.... Well yes but it gets better.

For people and street photography nothing beats the Pike Street Market. Especially, during the summer there is so much going on at the market.

As for nature and landscapes, you do not need go far. Check out the Seattle Arboretum.

Also, check the neighborhoods and see what you find. Fremont, Capitol Hill and the International District.

When is comes to backpacking and day hikes, you can't live in a better place, with exception of maybe Denver. If you are an avid hiker, I suggest looking into Washington Trails Association, Home — Washington Trails Association. WTA is the best resource for outdoor adventures in the area.

Good luck and welcome to Seattle.

Business cards

The free vistaprint promotions are not very good. You end up with a very basic card and vistaprint logo on the reverse side.

However, if you buy up with vistaprint you can get a good looking card for not much extra.

There's also Kinkos (FedEx). You can upload your own design to them or use their site to design a card. A neat thing with them is you can get your cards in a few short days by picking up the order at a service center.

I agree with Wheatfield, if I can afford to support a local business, then I do. If you are looking for a print shop, I would start with Yelp.

Very good point! I've walked only 8 miles with the Brazillion Dollar home and my back was complaining.

The Crumpler Sinking Barge is a very comfy bag. Just doesn't hold as much as the others.

I second the crumpler bags. I own two as well.

The Crumpler Brazillion Dollar Home is exactly what you are looking for. I just purchased this one and it's amazing. It will hold all your gear.

I've had great success using Qnap Products via iSCSI. This makes the remote disk appear as a fixed disk in OSX. As boriscleto suggested, you'll want to attach this to your router.

The NAS devices from Qnap support SMB, FTP and other protocols.

Axl,

Sounds like boriscleto's idea is your best bet. You can get a "recovery like" console by booting from your Vista disc. When the install wizard starts, press F10 (or F11, I can't remember). This will launch a cmd window. You can access your already installed instance of windows and delete the file from there.

Another option is to boot from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD and delete the file. Ubuntu comes with NTFS3G already enabled and it is fairly reliable.

After some testing I'm sure it's a bug in the current version. I've started a thread on the help forums as their is no official way to submit a bug.

Possible bug: Picasa drops all EXIF data when saving DNG as JPEG - Picasa Help

Picasa is removing the EXIF data when you save the photo as a jpeg or upload it to Picasa web albums.

I took a quick look and there are no options to turn EXIF data on or off on export. I think it maybe a bug. I'm going to do some more digging.

Update: I found some forum posts on the Picasa help forums talking about corrupted data. A suggestion was to use ExifTool by Phil Harvey to repair the information. However, there is no data to repair. It would appear the EXIF data is gone.

On a related note, ExifTool is a command line too. There's GUI front-end that makes life much better: http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/foto/exif/exiftoolgui.htm

How do you back up your photos? (or do you?)

Hey there Capslock118,

I use an online backup service for my files. They have become fairly inexpensive and provide a good piece of mind.

I personally use Mozy. Mozy is a product put together by EMC.

Mozy securely backs up any data and distributes it across their data centers. So you've got your offsite and redundant backups covered.

In my case I have ~75GB of photos backed up with Mozy. It took about 5 days on my 2 Mbps upload connection.

Good morning Pietrach,

It does seem a little pricey for an eBook. From what I can tell, the book is distributed electronically only. It does not have an ISBN or other identifier.

Take a look at the Strobist blog. A few years ago, David covered room lighting on a budget.

Strobist: Working Around the House

Also, there seem to be other options on Amazon. Though I can't speak to the quality of the books. If you do find a book you want to try, check out ABE Books or Powell's for good used prices.

Good hunting!

Windows 7 Pro version?

I do not believe there is any advantage to the Windows 7 editions when it comes to photography. They are all fairly similar. Windows 7 professional can support more RAM, more physical CPUs and more storage.

For more details about the differences, check out the Wikipedia Article: Windows 7 editions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As for any advantage, I do not believe there is a massive difference. For most people, the 16 GB RAM limit on Win7 Home Premium is more than enough right now. Also, you'll be hard pressed to find a consumer PC with more than one physical CPU.

Between the Windows 7 versions there is no difference between the graphics systems. So your photos will show up the same under each version given that you are using the same hardware.

You mention 4x5 photography. If your scanning your photos, a scanner will work the same under all versions of Windows 7. So no worries there.

Hope these points help.

Hello from Seattle

Hello Pentax Forums!

I've been an amateur photographer for about ten years. I started out studying graphic design, which in turn, introduced me to photography. I switched majors from graphic design to English Literature. Photography became a hobby after the transition.

I'm now an Information Systems Engineer for a small bank here in Seattle. An English Lit. major running information systems... go figure?

In regards to photography, I started with a Pentax ME I inherited from my father. He only used the camera once for a trip to Mexico City to see the Formula One race in 1986. By the time I had my hands on it, the camera had been sitting for nearly 14 years unused! But, sure enough, it worked (with a fresh battery).

I now use a Pentax k-7. One of the great cameras in my humble opinion. :D

I am looking forward to leaning and sharing what I have learned here on the forums.

This looks like a very cool tutorial. Unfortunately, the images are broken. Looks like they are linking to somewhere local to your network. For example:

I can't wait to see the whole writeup! Thank you for putting the tutorial together.
