Thanks for the replies - I opened this thread as I've never experienced this problem before.
It seems odd, (thinking back...) even if I took the CP filter off, it would still not focus properly... even moving the focus point around from a building to a tree to something else... trying to hunt a more contrasting focal point. The only thing that would help was to bring the zoom back in.
...this was using my K-r. I've had no problems taking distance landscape shots in the UK (Lake district, Dales, etc...) before, but perhaps I have and never thought it an issue! Saying that - those locations are pretty contrasting in the summer months.
My wife on the otherhand had no problems using only a 18-55mm with her K100D...
Just can't believe I've never experienced it! - I've just tried focusing at a distance on white sky (can't always focus) and distant roof tops (can't always focus, but better than focusing on sky!)...

I recently took a trip to Italy, and used both a 50-200mm and 18-55mm - and both had trouble autofocusing at a distance when fully zoomed - I had to start reeling the lens in until it would focus...
I would say the conditions where hot (high twenty's to mid thirties) and humid on days, and with a white haze at a far distance.
In addition to the lenses, I was using only a ciruclar polarising filter - no UV filter.
Is this a problem with the conditions or the camera - could it have been fixed by using a filter?
Any help or experience would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

Can't lie - I did think that with six FPS you're more likely to get atleast a one in six chance of hitting a fast moving subject in focus!... but none the less, it's a feature my ist didn't have.

Just thought I'd open a thread for users to highlight new features on the K-r they've found (as opposed to try and work out if your camera doesn't work!). I come from an entry level *istDL2 and although I'm missing a few (top LCD for one)... there are others to be more intrigued about.
1) Catch-In Focus option 20. on the Custom menu.
Holding the shutter release button fully and focusing on an area the subject will pass - the shutter is automagically released when the subject comes into focus.

I don't know if this has always been an option, or already pointed out - but since updating my firmware I have noticed an unusual option within the final folder - "13. AWB in Tungsten Light", with two options 1 Subtle Correction and 2 Strong Correction.
Just took the time to read my manual - and it's an option in firmware 1.0!... so, ignore me!

Thanks for making me aware of firmware updates!... Just updated this six hour old K-r no issues, and noticed the "Archived" folder hiding an update for my aging *istDL2... finally I can use my SDHC cards!
Thanks again.
