Best UV filter to protect front element

Thank you all for your feedback. I will most likely put a clear filter on when I'm shooting on windy beaches or around the salt spray. I also plan to use this lens at horse shows where there can be lots of dust. :)
Cheers,
Rena

I live beside the ocean with lots of salt spray and fine powdery sand. I plan to shoot a great deal near the water, especially later this summer when hurricane season kicks into high gear in my area.

Just bought a beautiful DA*200 f/2.8 from a seller on this forum and I need to invest in a quality 77mm UV filter to protect the front element. Looking at various brands online and I'm looking for some guidance as to which brand is best to complement my new lens. What's your favourite and why. I welcome your response.

Vignetting with lense hood attached

Now that you say this, I also had a UV filter attached in combination with the CP filter in the sample shot I posted. The photos I took last fall of the waves only had the UV filter attached so this could be why the vignetting was there, only much softer than in the Jamaica beach picture. If having a filter attached creates vignetting with this lens then I won't use the hood. Any shots that were taken with the hood removed were fine. I will still try your suggestion to make sure that is what's causing it. Thanks for the tip.

This photo was taken last March. Most of the others shots were edited to have the vignetting removed.
There is a CP filter attached to the lens in this shot.
I have other shots of waves taken last fall during Hurricane Katja which also have vignetting, but not as severe as this shot. (CP filter was not on the lens for those shots).

Vignetting with lense hood attached

Yes, all shots. On a K7. It's a brand new lens. Both indoor and outdoor shots have it. I can only mount the hood with either the Pentax logo on top or the bottom (with the sliding hatch facing upwards). There are two white dots that must be lined up before the hoods clicks into place. It's impossible to put it on any other way. Also, it's worse if I use the pop-up flash (I haven't purchased a hot-shoe flash yet).

I purchased the 18-135mm WR lens with much anticipation. To my dismay, all my shots show vignetting with the lens hood attached, especially while zooming. Is this normal with Pentax lens hoods? I have to turn the hood around or remove it in order to get rid of this. Can anyone offer a solution?
Thanks,
Mary Ann

Which filter to get?

Thanks to all who replied. I purchased a C-polarizing filter today to take on my trip. I'm only taking one lens--18-135 WR--which I purchased specifically as my "walk around" lens. Hopefully the combination of K7 and this lens will do it all. Thanks again for your comments.

I'll be heading to the sunny Caribbean in two weeks. Which filter would be better for shooting in bright sun, over water, etc. - a circular polarizing filter or a neutral density filter?

I recently purchased a K7 with the kit 18-55WR lens and I'm hoping to purchase a zoom lens to add to my gear. My first choice is the DA*50-135 but it's much too expensive for me at this time. My second choice is the DA 18-135 WR, but again my budget can't quite justify $600 right now. I've been watching eBay closely and from time to time I see some of the older zooms for sale at very reasonable prices (used, of course). Would I be wise to save my money and get what I want or settle for something less expensive that may not function properly with my new dslr and cause this newbie alot of frustration? Is there a listing where I can look up to see if the older lenses are compatible with a k7?

Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4

After 3 weeks of playing around with the Pentax image processing software I was only able to figure out how to crop photos and adjust the contrast. I can do the same thing using the Windows version on my computer. I sent an e-mail to Pentax Canada for support and heard NOTHING! I purchased a copy of PS Elements (version 8) from a friend for $50 (she couldn't get it to load properly on her computer). I am SO GLAD to have this wonderful program to play with my photos. If I get stuck all I need to do is click the HELP button and I'm instantly taken to menu options or I can search for a video tutorial to show me how to use the program or I can LIVE CHAT with an Adobe customer service person who can walk me through my problem step by step to get the end result I'm after. Sadly, I can't say the same for the PDCU4. I have uninstalled the program from my hard drive. It's Adobe PS Elements 8 for this newbie going forward! And, hopefully, when I become a better photographer, I won't need to do so much "tweaking" to my photos.

I recently purchased a K7 and installed the software that came with the camera. My system runs Vista with 64-bit encription and 3GB of DDR Ram. Every time I try to view a photo to make corrections I get a pop-up window stating my Pentax Digital Utility 4 has stopped working and Windows closes the program. Is there anyone else new to Pentax who is having the same problem? Are you/were you able to fix it? What did you do? Should I download the firmware update version 1.11 first to see if that fixes my problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Has the K7 been officially discontinued?

Ok folks...I really appreciate all the comments:) But I've made my decision and I don't think I'll regret it. I'm not a techno freak by any stretch (sorry if I may offend some of you...:p) I am a green, and I mean very green, amateur enthusiast who just wants a good dSLR body to start off; that wasn't too technical to operate. My hobby will be taking me mainly to the great outdoors to shoot nature and landscape shots in natural light (so high ISOs are not critical to me at this juncture). Most books I've read to date tell me that I'll probably use ISO1600 on very few occasions, so why spend the extra $$ for high ISOs? Also, (and this will be true with my new K7) there are features that I'll probably never use during the camera's lifespan. Again, the reason I chose the K7 over the K5. My biggest concern is the body and lens weather-sealing because I plan to be in some damp and dusty environs once I getting rolling. And the big kicker (for me) is the price. I'm chomping at the bit to get out there and start using my camera and I just couldn't wait for the price of the K5 to get to where I was willing to part with my hard-earned money. I can buy the K7 and at least one decent lens and a few essential gadgets for the price of the K5 body alone. The old saying holds true. Money talks! I am now the proud owner of a K7, a basic kit lens to get me started and a bag to lug it around the woods and fields. I'd love to chat all day on this forum, but I want to get outdoors and start playing with my new addition to my family!:D Wish me luck in my endeavours and maybe I'll post a few good shots once I learn how to take them!

I was told by a salesperson that the K7 is being discontinued. I have yet to read or see any website mention this. Would it be wise to purchase a K7 if this is true?

Thanks to all for your recommendations...I just checked a Canadian supplier in Vancouver, BC and they are now selling the K5 body for $1399 and the K5 with the 18-55 WR lens as a kit for $1595...I haven't been able to find someone selling the K7 as a kit with the 18-135 WR lens yet...I'll keep scouring the internet for the best deal...Pentax offers a 2 year warranty on purchases from authorized dealers in Canada...I'd rather buy new and have some warranty protection for awhile instead of buying used...Thanks again for all your insightful comments.:)Rena

Thank you for the tips for the lenses. My sporting events will be horse shows. During the hot summer the show rings are dusty so I was looking for the environmentally sealed capabilities of the k7 or k5 and the respective WR lenses. I also live near the ocean and we have alot of foggy, drizzly days as well. I was told by a local salesperson that my best choice would be either of the 2 cameras. I have been keeping an eye on the price of both cameras and the k5 is starting to get closer to my maximum budget. I am also looking for video capability, although full HD is not my top priority. I would like to take this camera on trips to the Caribbean and again, the weather-sealing features appeal to me.

Hello,
I'm about to purchase my first dSLR. I plan to do alot of outdoor photography (landscapes, nature, sports). I owned a film SLR many years ago but have forgotten most of what I learned about creating a good exposure. Which camera is a better "first timer", the K7 or K5? What other accessories should I consider as "must have gear" for someone just starting out in the world of digital photography? Which photo-editing software is the best and how user-friendly is it? Would I be better off to purchase the 18-55mm kit lens offered by most dealers or would the 18-135mm be a better choice for photographing wildlife and landscapes? Any suggestions are appreciated.:)Thanks, Rena.
