The K-7 arrived yesterday.
It was interesting to see the difference in sharpness of the K-7 versus the K-5iiS.

@100% resolution.

resized to 25%.

RAW-files exported as JPG's with no sharpening added.

The K-5iiS produces added sharpness. No surprize there.

Would be strange if Pentax went to the effort of producing a camera without an AA-filter and you had to struggle to see the difference.
Adding a tiny amount of sharpening in post to the K-7 images would fix that.
Other than that the K-7 has the same buttons and knobs and the same feel as the K-5iiS,-after all they're both Pentax.

Here's an old post of mine where I try the alarm clock HDR time lapse test.
I haven't done any shooting for a long time and had forgotten about stuff like shutter drag and aperture flicker.

At the factory a sample is tested and the average life for the K-5 shutter is supposed to be 100.000.
Some may break down sooner and some much later, but I'm not taking the risk of shooting timelapse vids with it.
A ten second timelapse with a frame rate of 24fps equals 240 actuations. For HDR with brackets of 5 shots the count gets up to 1200 actuations.
My K-5iis will reach 100.000 after 23 such sessions.
But you're quite right, the shutter may live twice as long as 100.000.

I'm located in Sweden.
None to be found in Sweden, Finland, Denmark or Norway neither on ebay nor on other second hand sites nor in shops.
The rest of the European Union? -No K5iiS on ebay.
We have gotten spoiled here in the EU, no taxes, no custom fees, no paperwork and fast shipping.
Buying items from outside the EU has become less attractive.

United Kingdom? -Found one item but it takes forever to get it shipped and high tax.
US? Haven't checked but taxes are high.

Japan is the only place where these cameras are widely available.
I need the camera ASAP for time laps work and I would rather not put my k5iis with it's high shutter count through that risk.
Therefore I went for the cheap K-7 from -Finland.

Hälsningar från en norrbagge boende i Norrbotten.

There's a bit of extra sharpness in my K-5iiS, but the difference from my previous K-5 isn't noticeable unless I'm pixle peeping.

I bought the K-7 from Kameratori in Tampere, Finland.

Yes thanks, your comment is helping.
I do have the Pentax 50mm/f1.7 prime lens.
I almost never use my Pentax kit lens, theTamron zoom and the Vivitar wide angle lens.
Also I shoot in manual mode only and use the autofocus to get a focus indication.
The only thing I miss is the Katz Eye split screen on my previous K-20D, but focus indication works OK.

Nice video from Brighton . . .

HDR timelapse is nothing special.
Let the camera do the HDR bracketing and the intervalometer do the intervals. The intervalometer will then give one shutter actuation at the pre set interval and this makes the camera shoot the preset bracketing shots. Just make sure the intervals are longer than the combined exposure times plus the time required for writing the files on to the card plus a bit more for good measure.

One thing I did was very useful: -Make timelaps videos of an alarm clock that has seconds, minute and hour hands,-one video for each hand.
When each video renders each hand's movement smoothly take a note of the interval times needed to achieve this.
The seconds hand interval is nice for fast moving clouds,-the minute hand interval for very slow moving clouds and the hour hand interval suits instances where things change even more slowly.
This will reduce the choppy appearance of a time laps video.
Also, manual mode and manual focus is a must. If a autofocus lens is used you could switch to manual focus after autofocusing.

Unfortunately I lost all my pics and vids in a hard drive crash,-only a couple of pics survived thanks to uploading them to Facebook.

Here's one of them:
This was shot at night (midnight sun) in the northernmost part of Norway.
This is not HDR, but one exposure of the sky and one of the foreground.
Later the two were combined in Photoshop using layers and masks so HDR isn't always needed.

The K-7 will mostly be used for HDR time-lapse photography at 100 ISO so noise at higher ISO is not a concern.
HDR timelapse eats shutter actuations for lunch so the very low shuttercount in this K-7 is an important feature.
One thing that the K-5 and K-7 does not have is the abilty to shoot brackets in the same time as intervals so I bought a Neewer intervalometer from Amazon . . . problem solved. The camera takes care of bracketing while the intervalometer takes care of the intervals.
This will be my fourth Pentax camera.

-I have previously owned the K-20D, K-5 and my current cameras are K-5iiS and then the K-7,-all very good cameras.

I currently use a Pentax K-5iiS with a rather high shutter count (72.000).
Some day this shutter will meet the same fate as my old K-5 which died one sad day.
So, I needed a back-up camera and have been looking around for second hand alternatives and the K-7 seemed like a reasonable choice.
An AA-filterless sensor would of course be nice but it seems like the added sharpness is marginal at best compared to the old K-5.
I could have gotten my hands on a cheap and much newer K-S1 but it lacks the ability to control the shutter by a cabled intervalometer and has no connection for an external power supply so that one went out the door.
My choice ended up being a reasonably priced K-7 with a shutter count of only 1200 which is nice when shooting bracketed HDR timelapse videos.
The shutter will probably not kick the bucket for some time to come.
So, what do you guys think? -Is the K-7 a good choice while drooling over a K-1?

Good news. I contacted a large camera repair shop here in Norway, and they'll replace the shutter for 400 USD.
That's about what I'd have to pay for a second hand K5 with anything from a low to a very high shuttercount.
I had expected a much higher figure since we have high wages and high prices here, but 400 USD was not bad at all.

Yes, I've tried both.
I'll call a large camera repair shop to check for how much they charge for a shutter replacement.
-Or,- I'll buy a second hand K-5 for what they usually cost which is anything from 300 to 400 USD (here in Norway).

Nope, not until you suggested it, no change though.
By flipping the mirror up with a finger and then actuating the shutter it is easy to see how the shutter is built:
Three horizontal curtains each actuated by levers. The levers sweep down from the top and returns upwards again when the shutter action is completed.
The levers lie horizontally,-then sweeping downwards into a vertical position and finally returning upwards. However, they seem to get stuck before completing their travel towards a vertical position, which is why a part of them are visible as long as the shutter is actuated.
It seems that the levers aren't moving far enough downwards. Also there's a sound during the shutter-sequence that just doesn't sound right, like something is trying to move the possibly stuck levers. I have tried to carefully help the levers to continue their movement by pushing them with tweezers, but no luck,-they're stuck when reaching a certain position.

K-5 shutter problems

I've had my K-5 for a while now, and last night the shutter started to go sour on me.
I have checked the shutter-count, and although I can't remember the actual shutter actuations, I do remember it was rather high.
Well, last night I played around in video-mode and noticed that the display stayed black a couple of times. As the evening passed, this occured more frequently.
Today I decided to have a closer look at the problem and when taking stills most of them were not exposed at all while a few were severly underexposed.
I tried with several lenses in several modes but the symptom persists.
With the lens off the body and the camera in sensor cleaning mode and with a fully charged battery the mirror flips up but the shutter is still closed.
I guess the shutter mechanism is shot.
Anybody who had the same problem?

Focus problem when lens is set to 18 mm and trying to focus near infinity. Sometimes focus locks on, sometimes not.
This behaviour has started recently. Anybody here having had the same problem?

This is why I upgraded from the K-20d, and although the K-20 d is a great camera the K-5 shoots just as nice images @ 3200 ISO as
the K-20d did @ 400 ISO.

Family reunion. Dimly lit room. Everybody expects lots of images to be taken. Welcome to ISO-noise hell.
This is the situation when I usually would be tempted to leave the camera at home and just enjoy the party.
But it so happens that my camera is a Pentax K-5, so I brought it with me and shot loads of pics all night @ 3200 ISO.

I upgraded from K20d to K-5 to partly use the extended ability of the K-5 to shoot up to 999 images in interval-mode, as opposed to the 99 max. images you get with the K20d. The K20d lets me shoot interval AND exposure bracketing at the same time, but with the K-5 this seems NOT to be the case. Yes,-I have set the K-5 to shoot the full bracket with only one shutter button push/actuation. I would very much like to avoid the use of an external intervalometer since the K-5 has one built into the camera, so is there a hidden secret to shoot interval AND exp. bracketing at the same time with the K-5?
