I'm not sure if this qualifies as 'gear p0rn' . . . . but it was a thoughtful Chirstmas Gift from my eldest daughter.
It's a lot of plastic bits to cut out - reminds me of assembling airfix model aricraft kits when I was younger - but without all the glue :)
And 'konstruction' is not without its hazards

That's a cracking result with the 03 lens - I know I'm not that clever with camera in hand, but am annoyed that I repeatedly fail to focus properly with the fisheye.

Have you considered the P series cameras? Rubbery take up spool rather than the 'magic needles'. I have an infrequently used P30t which would make a good workhorse. Plastic build, but adequtely 'weighty' and solid. It also has nice, discreet grips front and rear which improves the handling.
They're also 'good value' (cheap :))

I'm not familiar with the Yashica, but it seems to be an 'electronic' camera, meaning that you'll need batteries in to activate the shutter.
Someone with some real knowledge will be along soon, I'm sure!

I've never worked on them, but very familiar with these - plenty of 60s and 70s built Austin, Morris and Triumph models with mum and dad as I was growing up.
BUT - it's only now I know them as anything other than "SU carbs" Thank you :)

It's highly unlikely to work, but it may be worth removing the lens and delicately playing with the lever arms on the left hand side of the lens mount (as you look at it) to 'pull down'. I have an MX (completely different to your ZX) which will leave the mirror stuck up and a little movement will release the mirror.
It's only worth a try because it costs nothing and the camera is already, to allintents, 'dead' (but do be gentle)

Thanks, Larry - I've already got the focus assist set to x2 and then scroll the wheel to zoom in if needed and use the directional buttons to move the point of focus / zoom, too.
However . . . . I'm off to google "focus peaking" now :)

I was just playing with the Q, fotodiox adaptor and an old M series Zoom lens.
I'm finding it very difficult to manually focus anywhere near spot on by viewing through an LCD screen - any hints and tips gratefully recieved :)

Funny how the written word keeps being misinterpreted on internet forums.
On the plus side, Mr. Manual is Cornish - those guys are nearly as bad as us Welsh folk - and there's a possibility that he's reading and writing in his second language, too:lol:

Erik, that wasn't a dig at you - more of a general comment on how the same words are read differently by different people. I just thought that Steve's passage managed to allow the two of us to illustrate this.
What on earth possessed you to check in at 3am? That 's some commited forum participation :D (I'm lucky - no funny 'shift' patterns at work and once my head hits the pillow . . . . .. zzzzzzzzzzzz ;))

It's funny how we interpret the words written by others and how the 'meaning' differs between reader and writer.
I really thought Steve was laughing at his own financial pain at going down that particular road, doing so to give an 'eye-opener' to others.
After all the negatives, he then plays the trump card with (Note that I know little to nothing about photography . . .or taking photographs and need to learn a lot more before opening my mouth . . . . I'm still learning when to do - and not do - that)
Maybe it's just me, though;)

But they don't need to though - do they?
What would it take to make the transition between a KX / MX / LX to a pentax DSLR more 'natural'?
In my mind, it would involve a nice clunky-but-smooth shutterspeed dial, an 'artificial' clicky aperture ring on the lens mount (does anyone do this already? It would seem logical to me to do so), retain a multi-function wheel thingy for dual use as film-speed setting and exposure compensation dial.
Then bung the rest of the auto / program type functions via a screen on the back and / or an LCD display on the top plate.
An MZ-S style tilted top would be practical for an LCD display, but that could spoil the whole film-analogue-esque experience for many.
The whole 'heavy' build-quality thing isn't really relevant either (although I prefer the metal bodies to hold) - MX, K1000, P30 and P30t all operate in the same manner (with the P30s, it's easier to change the shutterspeed). The ME Super is a ibt different though due to the buttons
. . . . I'll go hide under a rock now ;)

Somehow - I've ended up with one of each of the bodies you mention.
The MX, in a cock-eyed way of looking at things, is a mix of the other two bodies you have. Nice and compact like the ME Super, but with more the robust, almost clunky mechanical feel of the K1000 - but somehow 'smoother'. I don't think an MX will 'give' you anything that you haven't got already in a technical sense (someone will correct this statemenet shortly :)), but the MX is is a very nice tool to use.
I am not heavy user of my film cameras, but when the time comes to take some photos, I always seem to end up loading film in to the MX. The ME Super gets a roll every now and again, but seldom does the K1000 get use.
Going off topic, I've just loaded a roll in to a P30T - I know it's plasticky with an electronic shutter, but it feels nice to hold and use - rotary speed / mode dial which you can use with one finger (try that on an MX - I struggle), it feels light, has a very small but very effective moulded grip and the rubberry take up spool loads film easier than the old magic-needles too (I'm very clumsy). I think I'm going to like using this - much more modern feeling than the other bodies :D

Please excuse what follows if it turns out to be a dull comment (I've never used, let alone owned, an LX)
Presuming that the film speed and aperture remain constant, it's only the shutterspeed that is varied by the camera. 6 seconds, when compared to 4, is only half a stop - so the LX is only really making a very minor adjustment when it automatically exposes for you. I wouldn't really consider this to be 'excessive' variation from the manually metered scene . . . but it does hint at some sort of inconsistency in the operation of the metering of the camera.
Do you know how this manifests itself on the developed film / prints yet, or have you not had the opportunity to get the processing done yet?
The battery drain would leave me a little more concerned - (bear in mind that I don't even know how the meter on the LX is activated!)
Battery drain is only something I've experienced (very limited experience!) with a P30 . . . . . . which has been left switched on . . . . . . . . more than once - hardly a camera problem in my case - just an issue with the idiot using it ;) (something that limited use of a K1000 has never revealed as a problem - I seem paranoid about getting the cap back on if using that). It took over a week of being left 'on' for the P30 to kill its battery - so not that long really.

Get them in the palm of your hand and peer through the viewfinder of both - I think that will go a long way to giving the answer you want / need.
The ME Super gives shutterspeed / metering information more clearly than the later Program cameras . . . . . but that's only my opinion - you may well prefer the newer cameras.
If it makes any difference to you - you can swap the backs between these two types of camera (the newer cameras have a little thumb-grip . . . . which is a nice little addition to an ME Super)
