I have a D, never Z.
I just love the output of a CCD sensor. Ya, it’s slow but that’s how it is w MF shooting, at least for me. I have looked at plenty of files shot by Z, and while they look mighty fine, I prefer D over Z.

Adaptability is not the best part of owning a 645D - I agree. It’s more like having to adapt to using it. I’m one of those weird folks who cannot get enough out of CCD sensor. Until death do us apart ….

I am at roughly month 10 of using this camera and I have to say I agree with you. It is a goofy camera in that the outputs are really not bad at all, if anything it is quite good. Yet, it is really not a b/w camera in a traditional sense - but I think that is .... ok. The reason I think is ok is that you can shoot as many frames as you want and tinker with it with each shot, so as long as what you are shooting at remains where they are and what they are. Toning part - I came to accept that LR can do most things I intend to, and when it is printed, by and large I am pretty satisfied with gradation of tone.

I would be interested to know what percentage of the forum members would consider buying K1iii at, say, $2,500 - 3,500 range. The chance of that for me is zero. I look at my prints from my original K1, 645D, and even K10D, and wonder how much better a new camera can possibly be, or for that matter, needs to be. For me, image quality is at a point of diminishing return. I then shake my head when I look at pictures taken with an iPhone. It is a very tricky time for the camera industry but it has been for a while though.

I roll only with one body, with one prime, maybe two depending on the plan for the day, unless we call iPhone a back up. It is a hell of a back up.

I know they won't do it, but I was quite fond of GXR. I still shoot with it often. One of the "modules" I have is 33/2.5 Macro, which is very sharp, with beautiful bokeh, and almost Zeiss like distortion . . . . My point is that Ricoh has asked this question in the past about if more craftier lenses can be incorporated to a GR like body. Well, I for one loved it but it really didn't do very well. They may have realized that in the end this is a snap shooter's tool and not really meant to do it all. The dude in the interview kept repeating that point over and over . . . . .

Yeah I got one of those. It comes with this cool Pentax optical finder, which to my horror I cannot locate at the moment.
It’s a bit finicky but a fine sharp lens at that. The reason I bought it was that it was a smoking deal, and I wanted something that was bit shorter than 50. The only two lenses I use w my M10 is this and a Summicron 28/2,8.

I had a chance today to play with it for a good while. I thought it was a very cool little thing. Smaller than it looks on ads. I keep thinking that Pentax would do something like that but maybe they are still scarred from MX, which I kinda liked but never bought.

If it was me I would get one lens at a time. I’ll get to know it better. 35 / 2.8 macro is a great start.

In general I’m finding out that all of lenses were sharper than I thought, or sharper than I could get them to be previously with other bodies.
Not sure it’s because I’m gaining a stop and a half consistently for a given situation. Or that the resolution capability of this sensor is so much better than the last digital camera I bought, or that now I’m wearing glasses more consistently.

Not that anyone is interested, but I wanted to post what I think of this camera for those who are considering to purchase. Instead of a long post, I’ll itemize for the sake time and space.
- I predominantly shoot in b/w
- I print with Canon Prograf 1000
- Own three amigos, DA 35 macro ltd, DA 40, DA* 50-135, A8 85, Zeiss ZK 85 T Planer
- I use Apple studio display - more on this below
- I really like the files of K3 m. Manageable size is a big plus. Takes the beating on Lightroom manipulation High ISO grains are really pleasant.
- You will gain at least one stop. I’m feeling comfy saying you gain almost two. This is probably due to the fact that I find the high ISO pleasant.
- Tonality and gradation - I find my Leica M10 to be better in this regards. This may have more to do with lenses, not sensors.
- JPEG out of the box was not so good
- I am finding out that these lenses are sharper than I thought. I’m firmly convinced that the improvement on sensors will still benefit some legacy lenses for sure.
- The files print well.
- But, took me a while to get it right but in some ways that is to be expected
- For reasons unknown to me (help me out guys 😂), the final prints come out over exposed than what I see on the monitor.
- I don’t have this issue with my M10 files
- The studio display is new and not yet calibrated but it was touted as not needing one.
- I own an original K-1.
- the size and the weight of K-3 m is a sweet spot for me. It does not have to be smaller.
- As I have always felt, Japanese cameras, not just Pentax, have too many buttons and dials - this is not btw a criticism
- The pentaprism or should I say the viewfinder is a bliss. That being said, I often shoot at low angles. If no flippy, then I would like an angle view finder
- Video was a bonus. Never crossed my mind until I had it in my hands.
- it has given me, or opened my eyes and mind about a new medium, more or less
- I applaud Pentax for doing this
- But - I wish they built it from the ground up. For me, I would like a simpler camera. I wouldn’t even need a back screen.
- I think that if you are looking at Leica M mono (of all generations, really), you would be dumb to not look at this camera.
- Initial cost of the entry to the Leica world can easily set you up with nearly all of what Pentax can offer
- Lastly though - if you don’t print, I wouldn’t buy this camera. Just convert your color files to b/w. More than adequate for most viewers on monitors, calibrated or not.
Hope this helps few people.
Thank you

I’m just curious how OP views his/her work.
On monitor? Prints?
I recently got an Apple Studio display - and I’m just blown away as to how much sharper my files appear to be.
I mainly shoot in B and W and I print. Even types of papers can greatly affect IQ.
IQ capability of modern camera is by and large an overkill, although that statement hinges on the modality of the output.
Even my K10D can produce lovely prints.
With MF, if not printing, I’m really not sure what the kick is.
In the end, I would buy the best camera a budget can allow.

Hi folks
This thread is for those of us who got tricked into buying K3iii mono, and for those who are about to be tricked into buying one, or for those who don't ever want to buy one because b/w photos are for peasants.
For the record, I was coerced into buying the Matte version, when my name was not even Matt.
While we wait for the mono to arrive hopefully on a weekday when my wife works all day, let's fantasize about the must have lenses we need buy immediately, aside from what we already have, that must be mounted to mono sooner or later.
I for one sure would like to mount some Canon lenses (no I don't).

I shoot with M10, and mostly in B and W. Naturally, I am having to convert my files from color to b and w, and to be honest - I really can't tell the difference in appearance between color files converted to b and w and monochrome files (although I don't own Leica mono of any generations but looking at someone else's mono files). For me the tedious nature of converting color to b and w is almost enough to want to reach out for Leica M10 or even M11 mono. But at the price point of over 10K, I just don't want to. Here comes K3iii mono at this price point and it is enough for me to literally fall off the chair. The thought of being able to use my Pentax lenses to shoot monochrome and not having to convert files is almost too good to be true.

I have to tell you that at the hospital this winter does not feel the same as it did last year this time. It was truly nuts last year. Every 10 minutes there was a code blue being announced overhead. I was stepping over between people in emergency rooms. We were just running out of . . . . stuff. This year - what I see is compassion fatigue all the way around. These people who refuse to accept or acknowledge COVID diagnosis - we just kinda move on. Now really the problem is we are having a severe shortage of staff. We can't find nurses or RTs. The incidence might as well be higher because I have a feeling that these home antigen tests are not that useful in symptomatic patients, causing false neg results.

I just wanted to confirm that 10' is 10 feet, not inches, correct? If so, I find it crazy that people buy high res set ups like Fuji MF that is good enough to print 10ft plus when majority of them probably don't even own a printer. People that make a living at this - sure it justifies, as I am sure you can amortize the cost of your equipment to lesson tax liabilities etc. The equipment ended up not being that expensive, depending on how much you bring in.
Then maybe it's not that crazy considering that people spend more on stuff like Leica (myself included). I guess they will get your money one way or the other.

Hi Steve
As a pediatric intensive care physician I have seen so many deaths, many of which premature. Yet, I still cannot fathom as to what it feels like to deal with your own mortality. I am so sorry, and my heart aches and goes out for your suffering.
Admittedly - I am not a religious person in the conventional sense nonetheless I do hold my thoughts and regards on some type of higher being beyond our comprehension having some influence on life as we know it. For what it's worth - I will be pleading with higher being of any kind, so that you will receive the gift of life in a timely manner.
Thank you for sharing.
