The MacBook Air does have USB ports. You need a USB-C card reader.

From APSC to FF - questions about (very) subjective experience

Of course. My comment was because you mentioned that it was different with DA lenses from FA lenses. Which it’s not. It doesn’t matter if you’re using DA or FA lenses. If you’re expecting a certain field of view from a 50mm because you are used to working with a full frame sensor/35mm film then you will get a different FoV on APS-C with that focal length lens.

A 50mm DA lens is the same focal length as a 50mm FA lens and both will render the same field of view on an APS-C camera. The format they are designed for just changes how big the image circle is that can be projected, NOT the focal length.

Cheap workhorse lens?

To match the current zoom range you need a lens with the same focal length. If the OP is currently using a 28-80 on a crop sensor, then to replace that they need another 28-80. The focal length does not change between lenses designed for full frame or crop.

I wonder if the OP is confusing a zoom lens for a telephoto lens… So many people seem to think that zoom means telephoto, as in it “zooms you closer”.

OP - zoom just means a lens that can change focal length, as against a prime lens that is fixed focal length.

Why the fascination with superzoom lenses, both an 18-250 and a 28-300?

Best body in the world won’t get you great results with them.

Camera for beginner - thoughts?

Definitely didn’t recommend 50mm on APS-C as a single combo for a beginner.

Although I don’t routinely use zooms myself I think they are the best choice for a beginner. I would suggest that given a prime, a modern child would learn all about how to crop in post, not how to choose the appropriate focal length lens for a given scene.

If APS-C is all you know and you are not swapping formats crop factor is irrelevant.

In this circumstance I would think size of the camera overshadows just about all else.

There is no change to the crop factor with the FA. Both will give exactly the same field of view when set to the same focal length.

Don't you mean increasing ISO so you can stop down the aperture? The OP is shooting at F2.8 in two out of the three pictures, so not sure how he can open up the aperture any more than that.

JPEG image size question

Is the question about how many JPEG images can be stored on a 64Gb card? If so then yes, the number will be lower on the K3 as it has a higher resolution sensor, so the file size is larger per picture.

Have you tried increasing the sensitivity (ISO), and then shooting with the lens stopped down (bigger f number) to get the same exposure? The more stoped down the lens the greater the depth of field.

[Later, realizing that lens ring is not read, still wondering why the camera chooses 1.4 regardless of lighting conditions. Other lenses work fine on these cameras.]

With the camera not being able to read the position of the lens ring, it defaults to assuming wide open.

Best solution is to always leave the lens set on A and set the aperture from the body.

Not true. Both lenses are marked with their true focal length, so both will have the same FOV on a K3 when set at 200mm. There is no crop factor involved.

I'm also looking at purchasing a lens like this, leaning towards the Tamron for the stop extra speed.

I'm not quite sure how you can be sold something that is "brand agnostic" and believe it. I'd suggest there's a huge chance that using a connector type adaptor (so not adapting protocol and/or electrical specification, just physical connector) to allow you to connect your magic "works with everything" box may damage your camera.

Ok... to clear a few things up. These are all interchangable lens camera's. None of them have a "built in lens". The choice of lens is just as important as the choice of body, some would say more so. Great body and crap lens will give worse results than lower end body and great lens.
