Small ?
That's the magic of it.
Just have your hands surgically altered to fit the K-5 and enjoy.

Go on. Get out there in the dim light and shoot some pics around ISO 3200 and then you really gonna love it.
Maybe try 6400 - don't be afraid.

What software do you use?

Elements - more than enough for most people. A pro would need Photoshop full deal but for the most part Elements does the trick without breaking the bank even for advance amateurs.
Lightroom is pretty cool if you have a few spare $100 bi;ls kicking around. If you really are a geek or a masochist you could download GIMP for free.

Metz 58 AF-2 with Pentax K5

At speeds lower than 1/180th the flash fires one burst at up to full power if necessary (FULL GUIDE NUMBER) while at speeds greater than 1/180th the flash fires several bursts at reduced power as the shutter curtain moves across the focal plane as a narrow slit. The width of the narrow slit varies according to the shutter speed and the guide number reduces accordingly as the shutter speed is increased. As the shutter speed is increased the slit gets narrower and more bursts at lower power are required to illuminate the image on the sensor.

HSS will sync right up to 1/8000 but the Guide Number is reduced so much you must be very close to your subject. The LCD display will tell you how close you need to be.
Also forget about using the flash off camera unless you have a sync cord. HSS will not work above 1/180 in wireless mode.
All in all still a wonderful bit of technology to confuse us. Whoever wrote the manual should be forced to read it.

K-5 auto-ISO: What range?

400-1600 here. Use a 300mm a lot.
It is a personal preference as previously mentioned.
A suggestion. When shooting something non critical experiment with the high ISO settings - you will be surprised and perhaps see the benefits of having the hi limit "way up there".

K-5 Service Story - A Happy One -Lens Release Button

Hi folks- I don't post too often but here is a good one.
I recently had to send my K-5 away for warranty service due to a missing lens release button. It just wasn't there one day when I went to change lenses.
Anyway, after the required grumbling and cussin' about it I took it in to Henry's in Sudbury ON and the friendly helpful staff agreed to ship it away for me to Pentax Service. They told me however that it would likely take about SIX WEEKS. Sent it anyway and as luck would have it it was back in about 17 days. Hoo Rah.
More good news. The electronic level was not properly calibrated and a bit of a nuisance but they fixed that too even though I forgot to mention it.
My only complaint is that it came back completely reconfigured to the default values which initially is a pain in the rump as I had changed many but in the end I will be that much more familiar with my much loved K-5.
So there you have it; a happy service story. To Henrys camera in Sudbury thanks and Merry Christmas and Thanks and Merry Christmas to the Pentax Service department too.

happy K5 users who moved from K200D ??

Me, me, me !
Switched to the K-5 from K200D when I realized that some of my better lenses were capable of outresolving the sensor on the K200D.
The K-5 is every thing that everyone says it is. When it works. Mine works well.

High ISO amazing and I like the HDR feature. Photographer Mode (TAv) is really nice too.
Light, ergonomic, and easy to use it just crys out for primes.

In some ways it is smarter than I am but I am catching up fast.

"But I guess you can't use the automatic leveling system then."

If you mean the horizon correction, then I suppose not. Generally I correct that in PP if required.

I'm wondering if it really matters.
Mine is off too. By about two segments of the display.
If I know where it is level I can just compensate for it.
It cannot resolve down to a fraction of a degree like a bubble level would anyway.

Still, it is a really handy feature.

I have a similar history as the OP does.
Moved up to the K-5 from K200D a few months ago-love it.

I shoot mostly RAW and use auto ISO with the upper limit set at 1600.
I've not been disappointing with any of the shots so far and there have been many.
It may soon be time to push the upper limit up for one more stop.
This is an amazing camera. Rarely did I go beyond ISO 200 with the K200 D

Enjoy

Another name for the TAv mode is "The Photographer Mode" as it gives such great control due to the impressive Hi ISO performance of this camera.
I recently shot an air show and I wanted f8 and 1/6000s and got it . The ISO ran around 1100 on a bright sunny day.

And for anyone interested Otis is in my backyard right now.

Only One Lens -What Would it Be ?

Wow !

Thank you all. Great food for thought.

Have a new K-5 with a few unspectacular lenses (except for a M 50mm f1.7 and 100 mm f2.8 Macro) and am trying to choose which is the ultimate walk-around lens for me. I can see why a few posters would choose the 100mm macro.
Sweet.

I want the simplest lens kit (NOT KIT LENS) that one can get.
So far leaning toward s the 35mm f2.8 macro because of the focal length and sharp enuff to hurt yourself but I just like to torture myself with online lens window shopping.

Can't have 'em all.
Pity.

Thanks again. I really makes for a most interesting discussion.

In auto bracketing you can set up the number of exposures as well as the number of stops between them.

Looks like you have been switched from 5 to 3.
Switch it back.

Auto-bracket is also accessible thru the Raw/Fx button if so configured.

Also see the neat intro to drive mode functions on the home page of the forums.

Hope it helps

Walk Around Prime Advice
Posted By uptheriver
Replies: 23

I am blessed to own a K-5 and did not get a kit lens with it. I like primes having a Pentax 100mm Macro and an old M 50mm f 1.7 and I LIKE them.
So- I do not at this time care to purchase any of the available standard zooms and chose to shoot with primes. I was hoping to get some advice as to which of the following three lenses would be ideal as a walk around based on the users personal experience with any or all of these lenses.
I like to zoom with my feet.

Here is my list: and my thoughts:

Sigma 30 mm f 1.4 fast, but maybe to wide.
Pentax DA 35 mm Limited Macro f 2.8 - sharp enought to hurt youself and built like a tank. May be the ideal focal length but not that fast but it is on a K-5 so no big deal.
Pentax DA 40mm Limited - already have a 50mm but it is MF
Price is not of consideration as I consider these to me all in the same order of magnitude. I don't think I can save enough pennies for the Pentax FA 31mm f1.9

I shoot mostly landscapes.
Also have a K200D and a Sigma 10-20 mm UWA which are fantastic

I would love to hear thoughts from those that have used any or all of these.
Yes, I have read all the reviews and have done more pixel peeping than any human being should.
TIA for any and all comments.

K5 froze today. Could not even turn it off.
The only thing visible in viewfinder was a red focus point.
Fresh battery-no grip.

Had just changed a lens and I think perhaps I did it with power on.

Old firmware in unit .

Tsk,tsk, tsk.

Pulled battery to force power down and powered up OK

Wonderful shot.
