Transit of Mercury

Great shots!

Here's my shot from South Florida, just before it ended. It was a lil hazy so there were some clouds in the way.

This one is a single shot from the K-01 attached to the Pentax 1000/11 reflex lens. I used the built in 8x ND filter + an IR720 filter:

Mercury transits across the Sun May 9, 2016.

The little dot at bottom is the charred planet Mercury plus some sunspots above it!

Over exposure in Astrophotography and O-GPS1

Since you're brand new to photography in the dark, I would actually suggest that you forget about any instructions and just start experimenting and have some fun doing it!
Start on a moonless night outside of town with iso 800, point your cam at a constellation and try out some series of exposures. You don't need a very long exposure time if you just want to capture the stars. At f/2.0 maybe about 3 or 6 secs is already enough. For a basic shot of the Milky Way, try 30 secs at iso 1600. Later on, since you have the astrotracer, you can cut back on the iso to reduce noise. The unit will help to compensate for the longer exposures.

Don't forget to read up on basic exposure theory, for instance here: The Ultimate Beginner's Introduction to Exposure

Here's a couple from the recent Jupiter and full moon alignment last month. You can click through the pics for more.

Quick release solution for tripod legs + head?

Thanks, I'm looking at the AS compatible options. Here's what I'm dealing with:

The tripod is an older but excellent Manfrotto 3068. It is 37" long and also weighs about 15lbs by itself and the center column doesn't come out without tools.

It ride in an extra long drybag lashed to the back deck of the kayak like this:

"Hubble Jr" is the gentle giant SMC 1000/8 K lens that's a little smaller and lighter. It just fits inside the front kayak hatch that can be seen here:
(click for bigger version)

Here's the setup in the wild:
Hubble Jr all dressed up! (click for more)

It's rock solid setup for me, I'm, pretty happy with it.
Just need to figure out a solid way to connect the legs with the gimbal!

Just for fun here's Hubble Jr with the Pentax Q (5600mm) at 225 meters:

Thanks guys. I need to take the gimbal head off pretty much every time I use it. Otherwise the combo is too long and won't fit inside drybag nor kayak!
Center column idea is good except now I'd have another long item to carry. Space inside kayak is limited.
It needs to be solid to support about 15lbs (gimbal with 1000/8 K lens attached) !

NOT a quick release for the camera, but a quick release for the tripod head itself.

Tripod legs have a standard 3/8" male thread on top. When using a gimbal head, I have to keep it separate from the pod for transport.
It's kinda of a pain to keep screwing it (pun intended) on and off.

Is there a quick release type solution for easy mounting and removal of said gimbal head from tripod?

"Crippled" mount or not?

There's no need to remove or cut anything. Just undo the spring that keeps the aperture open inside the mount. This way it's totally reversible!

The "aperture simulator" was a ring inside the mount that likely just used a variable resistor to simulate the set aperture for the analog electronics metering system of the film era. This way Pentax provided open aperture metering and viewing. Ironically in the digital era, without this gizmo .. we're now forced back to 1960's stop down metering!

It's a shame they didn't include this in the K-1 flagship. Might have been complete for us 'retro' users! C'est la vie!

SMC Pentax A f1.4 50mm VS SMC Pentax M f1.4 50mm

Thanks J1MD!
Looking at this more in depth:
I used to think that if the aperture lever moved in an arc (it would be angled in relation to the mount from open to close) was an M or K lens.
Conversly, I used to think that if the lever just moved straight up/down it would be an A lens.
Now I look at a few lenses and see combinations that nullify the above .. for instance the M50/1.4 moves straight up/down and say the A28/2.8 moves in an arc. Very strange! :p

I wonder does the linear operation of the aperture depend on the linkage or the way the iris blades are attached? I really don't want to dig in too deep, just wondering if anybody's figured out the actual physical difference(s)?

There's no reason to take anything apart just for infinity adjustment. Most old school lenses adjust in a similary easy way. Glad it worked out for you! :)

This has me thinking. As previously stated, I received an eBay A50/1.7 however it has the rear flange from an A50/1.4 installed (verified by contact pattern and opening for larger rear element) for some unknown reason (why/who would do this??).
I have an M50/1.4, so I'm thinking of swapping the two flanges to get *some* 'A' style functionality. What would I get? Anybody have any experience transplanting A and K flanges?? Thx!

One of those lil screws is for the infinity adjustment stop. I haven't played with this exact setup, but it looks similar to other lenses I've had to adjust. Typically the focus ring is adjustable so that the distance markings can be lined up to grab an interior ring that actually does the focusing. That interior ring can be moved independently with a small screwdriver. But before you go loosening make sure that your PKA mount is seated properly as designed. Sometimes the adaptalls get tweaked by previous owners/abusers. You could also try swapping with another mount if possible or even using an M42 mount (plus K ring) to see if that makes a difference.

ripper2850, sure thing, but don't get carried away with C and D mount LBA - not all are that good! ;)

You're seeing the rolling shutter effect with the electronic shutter which is by design. You'll have to get the authentic Pentax K->Q adapter that has it's own shutter inside. Then you'll have speeds up to 1/1000 with a leaf shutter and flash synch above the pathetic 1/13 (part of rolling shutter - cmos readout design). Of course you can then attach M42 screw lenses (or anything else that focuses) and use the mechanical shutter. Personally idk that I'd buy it again, since I get vignetting at higher speeds with super tele lenses using the mechanical shutter (leaf) vs some jello with e-shutter. The main advantage to me are the much higher flash synch speeds for macro use!
