If you can travel comfortably with a Canon 5D, good luck to you. A three hour hike in the Sinai desert with one and three L lenses convinced me I couldn't.
I also found the camera too big to be inconspicuous, and was taken as a pro a couple of times when I didn't want to be.
The K-5 is light enough, small enough, with good enough lenses, and good enough low light IQ, to satisfy my needs. YMMV.

I completely agree with kjames5. He said, much better than I could, what I was trying to say in my earlier post. The K-5 and its lenses is a far better travel camera than anything Canon can offer, and has an unbeatable combination of ruggedness and low-light capabilitiy.
As for "success", it's OK to be a niche player if you have a USP - take Leica, for example. And the Pentax system certainly has a USP.

Thanks, NZ_Ross, for your well- thought out comments. As a member of the Leica User's Forum, I can confirm that there is just as much angst among its members' postings as here. And back when I had a Canon, the same was true there.
I had a Canon FF - a 5D and several L lenses. Great image quality. But hiking through the Sinai desert for a few hours with a full load of kit made me realise that great IQ can come at a (literally) heavy price. And being taken for a pro and asked to do something I wasn't ready for at the drop of a hat didn't please me either.
So now I've got a K-5 and several compact lenses. I can get the lot in a bum bag, it weighs about 2.5 kilos, the camera is weather-proof, and it doesn't look professional/expensive.
Enjoy the advantages the Pentax gives you. If you really want FF, be prepared to give some up!

To partially answer Markac's point, it's not just the cost of producing a camera with a FF sensor. Most of Pentax's recent lenses have been designed and built with cropped sensors in mind. They would all have to be re-designed to accommodate a FF sensor, and would be larger, heavier, and more expensive. The cost of such a program would be prohibitive to Pentax, as the cost of largescale lens replacement would be to many of its customers.
And what then? No manufacturer can compete directly with Canikon - they have the budget and the research facilities to continuously upgrade their lens range . A smaller manufacturer can only succeed in the market by carving out a niche or niches. This Pentax has done with it's small, compact, high quality primes. Try finding a pancake lens in Canon's lineup!
As for bringing back all the FA lenses, I wonder how many would show their age when put in front of a 20MP+ FF sensor? Some would be fine, but the rest? Remember, Canon has had to revamp much of its range over the last few years - check their website to see how many of their lenses have a II after their names. And that includes their big-money telephotos. Can Pentax/Hoya afford this, and would they make money if they did?

Don't forget that a FF camera will be relatively expensive, and a FF system (say a body and 4 lenses, including telephotos) will be heavy to lug about. People are giving up their Canons and Nikons not because of the IQ, but because they don't want to carry a 5DII or a D700 outfit around all day. Pentax, along with Leica's DRF, is the lightest quality system on the market today.

Hi, I'm a newbie on this forum. I've got a Canon outfit, but am seriously thinking of switching to Pentax. While the Canon telephoto primes are great, I find the total weight of the gear I'm lugging around (13 pounds/6kgs for a body and three lenses+TC+filters) is just too much for me now. It's OK for a short while, but after a couple of hours you really know it's there. Airline carry-on weight limits are a problem too - one European airline limits it to 6 kilos. Peter

I'm a newbie on this forum. I definitely want a longer lens and some teleconverters, and would be prepared to pay the going rate for them. Peter
