You could try the FA 20-35/4. It gives the FA 20 and FA* 24 a run for their money despite being a zoom. There was one on eBay for $400 that didn't sell.
There's the Sigma 12-24 which is full frame compatible. It was reviewed here. However, like the Samyang, it does not take front filters.

I already own a Pentax FA50 so I bought the HorusBennu for fun. Here are some pics: |

I've got 14 lens that I use on my digital body.
I also have a few manual focus lenses that stay glued to my film cameras (old inexpensive 50mm f1.7 lenses and the like).
For me, the attraction of the Pentax/K-Mount system was the selection of high quality small primes. A prime lens collection is always going to need more lenses to cover the same focal lengths.
A typical Canon user would buy a 24-70, 70-200, and 50 and call it a day. A Pentax user has 4 decades worth of K-mount glass to play with, even more if M42 and Adaptall etc is included. There's the FA limited trio, then the DA limiteds, then a few interesting * lenses, then vintage Sears/Vivitar/Rikenon/Kiron/Komine/Sigma lenses - there's no end to the LBA.
That is how I rationalise the large number of lenses in my collection. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

That's interesting. At what focal length did you start to see vignetting?

I've got a DA 18-55 WR. Small and light, decent optical quality, weather sealing... and at a low price too. I love its close-focusing ability.
And here's a picture of the lens itself: |

I have a Poor Man's FA trio of FA35/2, FA50/1.4, and FA100/2.8 Macro. I acquired them all for less than what a new FA31 would cost. The lack of Limited Pixie Dust aside, they complement each other well, though 35mm is not really wide on APS-C - nothing that a cheap Tamron 17-50/2.8 can't solve however.
I use them on 35mm film as well and can imagine how well they would work on FF digital if it ever came to fruition.

Well, considering that the K-5 from last page sold for $1300, what do you reckon is the going price for a second hand K-r with 18-55 kit? I sold a K-x body for $500-something last year, so I imagine the K-r would cost a similar price.

Just a heads up...
I was asking around the local camera stores for the Sigma 24/1.8 in K-Mount. There is a 6 week lead time. Even the online sellers overseas don't have it in stock. It seems there is a worldwide shortage of these lenses. For a small market like Pentax, I suppose that is to be expected.

Hi,
I need some help cleaning out my closet.
I started with the K-x and its kit lenses, then got into film photography.
I bought the K1000 and MZ-5N for very cheap, which came with lenses that are redundant in my collection.
I'm trying to consolidate everything.
This is what I was planning to do: Keep: - Samyang 8mm Fisheye
- Pentax FA 28 f/2.8 AL
- Pentax-M 50 f/1.7
Replace: - The kits lenses: (DA 18-55 f/3.5-5.6) and (FA 35-80 f/4.0-5.6) with
- A fixed aperture wide zoom (preferably with an aperture ring), e.g. Tamron 17-50 or 28-75, or Pentax 16-50.
- Prefer a lens that can cover full-frame, not just APS-C.
Get rid of: - Ricoh/Rikenon XR 35 f/2.8 Macro (redundant when I have a perfectly fine autofocusing Pentax 28mm prime)
Undecided: - Keep the DA L 55-300 f/4.0-5.8 ED. Better build quality but no aperture ring, meaning it is more difficult to use with film bodies. Or...
- Keep the FA 80-200 f/4.7-5.6. Has aperture ring, but not as good build quality. Also, it is a slower lens.
- Something else?
Basically I want to reduce my kit to: - UWA prime
- Wide prime
- Fast normal prime
- Wide zoom
- Long zoom
What are your thoughts on the wide zoom and long zoom?
Thanks
