Cut out a piece from a cd case so that it will fit in a cokin holder. (Add a polarising filter in front of the cokin holder first) This is the cheapest colour effects filter there is, and the effects can be realy great when you turn the filter in different positions. Cost = Price of a cd case.

Ok ! So you want to be an oil painter. And your favourite subject is "Seascapes". Right ! So you look around and find an artist that paints the sort of scenes you realy like. Lets say, Frederik Jud Waugh, and you want to learn how to paint like him. So you practice by copying his work over and over again until you eventualy can do seascapes as good as he. Now you can paint your OWN seascapes, and behold, they look just like the work of Frederik Jud Waugh !! And people who see your paintings will say they look just like the work of F.J.W. ! Now here is where some would critize you for following FJWs rules of composition and colour and maybe a few other rules that make FJW a great artist. Well duh !! That is what you were aiming for !! That is what you wanted, because that is what you realy like !!
Ok, that is my humble contribution to this thread. Hope it doesn't offend anyone.

BTW, I also used two or three clip-on cheap spot lights with coloured bulbs to add to these effects. You can clip them to a music or microphone stand .

Sounds like a good idea Ira. Here's one of the many ways I got some good and interesting pic's. First, I made a thin wood frame about 24"X 24" with feet on the bottom edge so it would stand upright, and streched a sheet of grease-proof paper across it, and glued it in place. When it is standing on a table, you can use a projector to shine a slide photo onto the back and stand an object in front to photograph. The slide picture can be either a scene or just a nice patern of something like window blinds or beads. Another way is to put a piece of highly reflective wrapping paper behind and shine a spot light onto it. When doing this, if you wrinkle the paper slightly, it reflects interesting patterns onto the grease-proof. There are endless ways to use this method. The picture I posted used this same method. Is there anyone out there that likes to do tabletop photo's ? I would love to hear about your techniques, setups, and items you find great to photograph this way. I did quite a lot of this back in the early 90s and gained many interesting ways to do setups, which I would like to pass on. This is just one of my many favourites |

I agree with all the above comments and maybe my experiance will help too. I joined a local photographic club many years ago, and just seeing other members photo's and listening to the thinking behind them, eventualy led to winning many of the club competitions. The only trick after that, was knowing when to throw away the rules

The first picture is stunning ! I often say that if a photo would look good as a painting, then it is great. This one would ! The dark oblong thing on the left is the only part that needs cropping. Thanks for posting.

you only needed a polariser filter to make them far better. But overall I think you have a good eye for composition . (Just my humble opinion)

I think your composition is perfect. The lighting is better in the lighter shot ,but I like the darker version as well. When composing this type of shot with something close in the foreground, you could use a softened flash to bring it up a little. One of the things I do when looking at a landscape shot, is ask myself "would it look good as a painting". This would. Thanks for posting.

I think photo No 2 is beautiful. Your composition is perfect and the colours are great. This shot would make a great painting. No 3 is great too, but is more in line with a Christmas postcard shot. Maybe a wider view would have helped make it as good as No2. Overall, great pictures.

I had the same problem with that software. The best fix is to delete the programme and download a better one. There are plenty of good photo packages mentioned on here. I downloded " GIMP2" after a forum member mentioned it, and it works great. ( And it's free !! )

Here's a great effects filter I developed many years ago for you Cokin users. Cut out the face of a cd case so that it fits your holder and add a poleriser to the front of the lens. Your image will have multi colours from the defraction of the plastic of the cd case. And those colours will change as you move the poleriser. To see this effect before you start, just hold the front of the cd case in front of a polerising filter and look through. The effect changes depending on light conditions, position of polariser, and position of filter in holder. Happy snapping !

I recently acquired my new KX and loaded the Silkly Pix software onto my pc. Now, when I bring up the program it will stay on the screen for just a few minutes and then I get an error message telling me the program has stopped and must close. Does anyone know why and how to fix it?
(Running Windows 7)
