Sports Photography at SI

Interesting that you posted this. I actually emailed Damian Strohmeyer (strohfoto@aol.com) a couple of months ago after looking at an SI picture. You can check out his website as well with some awesome pics Boston Sports Photographer Damian Strohmeyer.

I asked him what settings he uses for night sports photography and he said he shoots in RAW (of course), typically won't go above 2500 ISO, tries to fill the frame with the image to avoid unnecessary cropping and uses f2.8 to f4.0 which also is no surprise. He also mentioned when he shoots for SI, he doesn't post process - that SI does that. Imagine, just taking and uploading the photos and letting someone else do the processing! He also said he tries to keep shutter speed at 1/640 to freeze the action. To me, you have to have a 2.8 lens wide open and a higher ISO to get a good exposure at 1/640 at night.

After getting his email, I began to look more closely at all sports images and you definitely can see the noise of the high ISO in the photos on most. Now I just need to get a 200mm 2.8 !

SMC Pentax-M*1:4 300mm

Asking Price
450

Item Location
Goodlettsville (United States)

Item Description
The first " * " lens produced by Pentax is solid in your hands and produces great pictures. It's a manual focus lens with a built in lens hood and comes with front and rear lens caps and a pouch to go with it. This lens is a full frame lens so if Pentax goes that direction, you would love this lens even more!

It's in great shape with no optical issues and some minor wear and tear to be expected over the years. There are a couple of small spots on the lens where it looks like the coating may have come off but this does not affect picture quality.

Paypal and shipping included.

Full Frame lenses and value if a FF camera is introduced

What fun discussion that we all hope we can someday find the answer to - such great responses and passion around this topic!

My take - good glass is good glass and will hold it's value - look at the Super Tak M42 screwmount 50mm1.4 - it still commands around $100 on a format that has been obsolete for years - because it's good glass. I do agree with others though that new glass (or a refresh of current glass) would be needed - it's a shame that the DA and DA* lineup is not FF or the groundwork would already be laid. And the engineering of new glass might just be the reason Pentax will go another direction (i.e. mirrorless) with bodies and lenses in the future.

Purely a hypothetical game here, but I'm curious as to peoples thoughts about what would happen to the resale value of the FF lenses on the marketplace. Does anyone think the used prices would go up or even soar?

Item for Sale
SMC PENTAX FA 31MM F1.8 LIMITED - MIJ

Asking Price
$725

Item Location
Goodlettsville, TN (United States)

Item Description
This lens is listed as fair due to the guidelines established. Anyone familiar with the lens knows these are awesome. Allow me to give you the details.

Optically, the glass is clear with no issues. There is a small dent on the upper right portion of the lens hood although it is not "significant". This lens does have an issue with backfocus which I show in a few pics you can view on the flickr link. I show it with a home test - I do not have a "Lensalign" chart to make it official. Of course, this can be adjusted and compensated for on most cameras. When using Live view or manual focus, there is no issues and focus is spot on and sharp.

Shipping is for USPS flat rate with insurance and delivery confirmation.

Price includes paypal costs.

The bad habits of new photographers

Great point - this one really resonates with me. I had to learn this as well early on to eliminate distracting elements and now it really bugs me to see family photos and such with p&s cameras that have a newspaper or something lying on the table in front of them.

Yes, Practice, Practice, Practice...but we also live and learn.

To those that have been in the business awhile, some things come naturally and are second nature to you. As a beginner, I can tell you I have bought and read many books, taken 10K pictures and wished for fast lenses and nicer bodies. I don't know much about PP yet. I even email pro photographers from magazines to find out how shots were technically made.

But 2 years into this, I believe one major thing - some people have it, and some people don't. The minds eye either can compose a great photo or you have to work at it. It's just like music. I love a well written song but i can't write one. I also love a great photo but struggle to take one.

So a thread like this can have value and that's why I started it. For instance, I spent 2 days taking pictures of a huge flood in nashville in 2009 just a few months after getting started. When I finally sat down to view the photos, I found all of them had ISO set way to high and were washed out. I was mad at myself but what a great lesson.

I have also borrowed other people's cameras like a Canon 5d only to find my photo looks the same as my K-x. Oh, and I don't know how many times I have not set continuous auto focus when shooting a moving target.

But forums are a great place to share and learn and hopefully someone gets value in that.

The bad habits of new photographers

Ok, let's have some fun...

So I believe there are a number of bad habits an amateur (or maybe pro as well) go through -There a likely more than I have here but I am calling these the 7 bad habits of new photographers....1) lens buying addiction 2) Chimping 3) I'll fix it in post processing 4) forgetting to check proper ISO 5) putting money into bodies instead of lenses 6) Blaming the equipment and 7) Never getting a photo printed.

I am guilty of most all of the above but am particularly interested in number 7. Does anyone else find that they never get a photo printed? Or...on the flip side, keep hundreds of photos you'll never use. Would love to hear perspectives on the above. I know a photo in hand is much better than on screen, so why don't I get more printed out? Are we stuck so far in the digital age we don't need prints anymore? Thoughts?

Maybe there's other bad habits as well not listed here. Would love to hear about yours!

I prefer this to be a package deal for $160 shipping included. Everything you need to get started in the M42 category.

Super Takumar 50mm/1.4 Good condition, lens is clear and works great. Front and rear lens cap but do not have the case. This lens has a bit of the yellow tinting that can be easily fixed via UV light or sunlight as can be seen in other posts in the forum.

[B]Super Takumar 135mm/3.5[B] Good condition, lens is clear and works great. Front and rear lens cap with lens hood and case.

Auto Chinon 28mm/2.8 Good condition optically although the body focus ring has deteriorated. Front and rear lens cap with case.

Sun auto tele up 2x teleconverter Good condition with no issues.

Genuine Pentax M42 to K mount adapter Bought early in 2011 and works great.

Pentax Spotmatic Good condition - comes with leather case. I have never used it - was more interested in the lenses when I bought this package.

This is my first listing. Please don't let that shy you away. I will do everything I can to make this a smooth transaction. I believe the price is very fair for all this combined and would prefer paypal gift if you would be so kind. Shipping is included. Thanks for looking.

K-x vs. K-5 Low light, High ISO Rating
Posted By olivemike

Thank you everyone for such great thoughts - I'm flattered some Pentaxians got in on the discussion and I didn't imagine I would get this response. The reason for my post is really related to my recent desire to take good indoor basketball photos of my kids at an elementary school gym. With full disclosure, I know I have work to do regarding faster long lenses as I have a M*300mm/f4 but it's hard to focus quickly. The other option is a 55-300 DAL kit lens that goes up to 5.8 and blows any chance at low ISO. As i look at the DxOMArk scores for Sports (low light ISO), the K-x rates at an ISO of 811, the K-5 at 1162, and the gem 5DMarkII at a whopping 1815. So my next question is about Full Frame vs. MP. Does the 5DMarkii have a better score because it's 21MP or because its full frame? In the same context, is the K-5 better because of 16MP or a slightly larger frame? Thanks and I look forward to your expertise on this as well.

If you go to the end of the K5 or Kx review at dpreview.com, you'll find an interactive comparison chart to compare almost all active and some inactive cameras. Interestingly enough, the Kx is shown to outperform the K5 from a Low Light, High ISO standpoint. Does anyone believe this to be true?

K-x Mirror slap?

I guess my main concern as I have read in other threads that if a board goes bad, something probably caused it. So in my case, would an aperature control unit be a cause of electronic failure?

K-x Mirror slap?
Posted By olivemike

Bought my K-x in January of 2010, have 5K clicks on it and have had an ongoing issue with it. The issue is that at certain times (haven't figured out exactly how to reproduce) the mirror activates by pushing any button on the camera. It could be the ISO button, green button, dial, etc. Anything I touch activates the mirror but does not open the shutter. As a result, I can't take a picture. It seems to happen more with the M42 lenses screwed in but has also happened with the DA*50-135. I sent the camera to C.R.I.S and their estimate is $244 to fix by replacing the PCB and aperature control unit.

Has anyone else had this issue? My fear is I spend $244 and 3 months later the same issue crops up a day after the service warranty expires.

I can't believe I have to spend that much money for a camera with 5k images on it and 18 months old. Frustrating as it has not been abused in any way.

Oh, and it will take 4 weeks to repair. Any options out there anyone is aware of?

Well, I'm just an amateur and don't have a lot of experience with flashes and photocells and other technical pieces so it was just me and the camera today.

Attempt #1 failed but I did learn a few things. Being on borrowed time with my 9 year old son (attempt lasted as long as his patience held out), I took quite a few shots but did not get the one I wanted. However, as stated by others earlier, using a HI fps is not the way to go. With the K-x, the shot was either too early or too late and of all the attempts, only 1 got the club head in the picture - it was an inch away - ughh. I have attached that picture. The good news is that with my son's swing speed, it did freeze the clubhead and you would think the clubhead was not in motion but it actually is so I liked that part of the experiment. What I don't know is if his clubhead speed will compress a range ball if I can time it right next time.

I took other shots from a distance using a single exposure and had better success than the multitude of balls using hi fps. So, next time, I'll gear up if I can find a driving range fanatic who has the patience and try to time it just right with single exposure. If anyone else wants to try, I'd love to see the result!
