AF-C of K-3III is impressive

Hopefully this will clear things up at least a bit.

AF-H (Auto Focus Hold)
The AF-H mode only pertains to horizontal and vertical tracking when the subject is at a pretty consistent focal distance from the camera. In case (say a tree) gets between the camera and the subject as you're tracking/panning, AF-H will essentially "Hold" the AF distance to maintain focus on the subject and ignore what temporarily just came between the camera and the subject.
AF-H options
Low - Short duration of holding the focal distance (short pause before traying to re-focus)
Med - Longer AF pause
High - Even Longer AF Pause

There is no documented "time" so you'd have to play with it.

For Z-axis tracking (subjects coming towards or away from you)
Turn AF Hold off or it will keep pausing the AF as you try to track.

Again, AF hold is for X and Y axis (horizontal and vertical tracking, if there's potential for other objects to be within the frame between the camera and subject). Turn off AF hold for Z axis (subjects moving towards or away from the camera).

Hope this helps!

I have two original batteries, and a lot of cheaper copies. I label my batteries with the purchase date, and none of the 3rd party batteries have survived more than 3 years with good endurance. My original K-5 battery from 2012 still holds it's charge fairly well and the K-1 battery from 2016 is still fully functional. I would say that 'buy well, buy once' might not fully describe the situation for batteries, but the evidence certainly favours the expensive originals. Suffice to say I will not bother with any more cheap ones.

As an aside, I am so pleased that Ricoh have stuck with the same battery for all the K-n models (where 'n' is a single digit or '01') (and 645). Keep it simple is a good plan. :)

This just my opinion about batteries, but I'm really shocked by how many people buy the third party batteries. I think more people should consider buying the official batteries rather than the third party equivalents. For two reasons:
1. It supports the brand better (more about that below)
2. Their performance seems to be a little better, and they are guaranteed to work safely. For example, Ricoh has a new fast charger available for the K-3 III battery. This must have been tested with the official batteries to ensure safety, but I doubt any testing was done with unofficial batteries.

It's true that the Ricoh accessories can look overpriced, but I think it's best to look at it holistically. Ricoh is supporting camera and lens development for K-mount, which is a rather difficult/marginal business to be in these days. They are not making huge profits, so are they really "overpricing"? Accessories have always been a way for the camera companies to earn some extra profit. Other batteries might seem like better value, but there is value in supporting the company that develops the cameras and lenses we want.

Obviously some people are genuinely hard up and it's a significant difference to them so there is some value in having third party batteries available. But in a lot of cases, people have a choice of whether to support Ricoh (and Pentax) with a purchase or save a few pennies and not support them.

This is something I would really like to be addressed in a Pentax Forum review. An assessment of how well the new AF system works in both single shot and continuous mode with ideally:
- F/FA-era screwdrive primes
- F/FA-era screwdrive zooms
- DA-era screwdrive primes
- DA-era screwdrive zooms
- Old SDM star lenses
- DC lenses (such at the 20-40 or 16-85)
- PLM lenses (well, it's "lens" at the moment, but anyway, the 55-300 PLM)
- New SDM (DFA50 or 85 at the moment)
- Sigma 18-35 (or another somewhat recent Sigma with a history of AF complaints)

It's a demanding list, so I know it's a lot easier said than done. But if any site has the knowledge to cover this thoroughly, it's Pentax Forums.

I think if it can be demonstrated that the K-3 III is going to give new value to the lenses we already have, it's going to encourage a lot more people to go for it.

Yes. In addition they have said that the K-3 series will continue with a Mark IV and V in due course. This a statement that they believe in the future higher end APS format DSLR's. That the K-1 name is reserved for FF cameras implying that the K-1 series will continue as well. It shows that Pentax do not believe that the DSLR is dead. This must be hard for all the nay-sayers out there.....

There is some coverage of the K-3 III on the Yaotomi Camera website.

First a detailed overview of the camera itself. To be honest, there is nothing you couldn't find elsewhere, but they do their own photos of the body, rather than copying the official Ricoh Imaging shots.

This user report is more interesting. There are a number of samples and a video. They are all at low ISO unfortunately. Some of the images are taken with the HD Limited lenses. If you click the main images, you can see a larger, but still not full size image. There are a few where you can see the full-size image by clicking the small thumbnail.

Probably beating a dead horse here, but I just wanted to point out that the K-5 launched at $1599 if I recall correctly. We're just back to paying premium prices for premium cameras.

Is this the birth of a new rumor or what??? :)

Subject recognition through OVF is available when using Auto AF Points and Zone Select (these are two of AF Active Area settings). At least that's what Wakashiro san told me when I asked (K-3 III "online touch and try" CP+ event open for registration. I'll attend. - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com), and that's what Wakashiro san said in one of the seminars later (Tanaka san - Wakashiro san online seminar about K-3 III (CP+ 2021) - PentaxForums.com), so I believe this to be the case.

Wakashiro san was not talking about Capture Modes (Av, TV, M, AUTO etc.). You can use Auto AF points or Zone Select in any of the Capture Modes except that AUTO (Capture Mode) forces you to use Auto AF Points.

(Added later.)
You beat me to it, I too suspect that house (or maybe another poster who wrote the post that house read?) might have been confused by my posts.

This much-awaited lens has been finally announced on several European Ricoh Imaging sites, such as the French, British, and German sites.

Here's a link to the announcement on the British site:

Development in progress of the lens HD PENTAX-D FA?85mmF1.4 SDM AW - RICOH IMAGING EUROPE S.A.S

The post dated 23 March 2020 basically confirms what was already rumoured, including the much-cited launch date now phrased "Scheduled to be launched in late, [sic] 2020".

Maybe not earth-shattering news, but still nice to see something official. :)

For me, the DA* 60-250 has nice (really good in fact) image quality, but the flakey AF, zoom extension/creep and focus breathing really irritate me.

This new lens addresses all three. And it's 220g lighter. And it's *really* full frame. With a focus limiter.

I'll wait for the dust to settle, but I can see my medium telephoto needs getting a lot simpler.

Internal zoom. Boom.
Both wider and longer on the K-1 than my DA* 50-135 is on my KP.
67mm filter thread.
Fast, silent AF.

Take my money!

My 50-135 and 60-250 will be on the marketplace shortly. Then I'll consider the fate of my DFA* 70-200....

Yes, they have both the DA 55-300 f/4-5.8 and the DA 55-300 f/4.5-5.3 PLM. The second is so much better in speed and noise than the first. I own both of them. I wonder how many would have been sold if the second had been a DFA lens instead of a DA lens? I'm not convinced that many go to the K-1 series thinking of photographing animals {remember the reaction to it as a "K-3ii replacement"}. I expect the company is better off this way.

To be considered a competitive option in the full frame market Pentax will have to develop a fast 85mm lens. We already have a fast 50mm and fast f/2.8 15~30mm and 70~200mm* zoom lenses and consumer/budget oriented 28~100mm range zoom lens. A fast 85mm lens only makes sense, so does a fast 24~28mm lens. Though I wouldn't complain at all if Pentax chose to expand upon the FA limited lens line. With a high quality, solid all metal bodied sub 31mm lens, or another lens over 77mm**, an unusual product alongside a rather standard lens line up offering would be a great contrast and a way to create renewed interest within in the industry in a classically Pentax way. I remember how the original announcement of the FA limited lenses created quite a bit of talk and discussion, the lenses definitely caused a stir among lens makers. To this day my colleagues see me working with the FA limited lenses in the studio and they remain impressed with not only their functional and aesthetic qualities, but also their optical performance on the K-1 as well.

* with a 70-200mm f/4 making an appearance on the lens roadmap.

** Some consider the D-FA 100mm f/2.8 Macro WR to be made in the spirit of the FA limited lenses, I consider the lack of an aperture ring to discredit this notion.

Clock speeds are a bit higher, so that helps. Also, having more cores can help... but it depends on the tasks. Really, in most areas you'll struggle to make full use of the 6 cores/12 threads available on the 3600. It's fast enough for most, and if not, go for the 3700. As I do video quite a bit, that's where I expect to see a nice bump when encoding 4K video. In Lightroom, nah. Perhaps when exporting a ton of photos at once, otherwise I haven't noticed much of a change. And it doesn't look like it's using the cores. The 6 core was more than enough.

There's a reason why I didn't go for the 16 core. :D

I am officially done with buying anything from eBay or from camera shops on the web for a while. My last five purchases have been one hit, the Auto 110 kit, three total strike-outs Including today’s delivery and one outfit touring the countryside on a misadventure via FedEx Ground.

Today’s acquisition is a Program Plus, SMCA 70-210 F4, SMCA 50/1.7 SMCM 28/2.8 and SMCM 135/3.5. All in “ Good used condition” A term of which I have become seriously skeptical. Anyhow, the whole shebang was packed into a women’s size 10, single wall cardboard shoe box wrapped in brown tape. It looked like a kilo brick of illicit narcotics. (It DID come from Miami). No cushioning in the ends of the box at all. The top had some foam, the bottom a bit of foam and between the lenses and camera were two wads of paper and four lose divided from a $5 camera bag! Of course, this time of year the package received some rough handling and, because of the lack of space between the sides and lenses, two were damaged. Absolutely the fault of the eBay seller for not using a better packaging solution. On top of that, all for lenses have fungus. The 28 and 50 have very little, though the 28 has a slow iris. The 135 is polluted on the inside face of the last element group. The zoom is a science project. Speaking of the zoom, it took the brunt of rough handling and is now jammed at 150mm. Somehow the camera, which had no padding behind it, arrived unscathed and is clean and functional, needing only new mirror bumper foam. I’m waiting to hear from the seller since it was a no returns auction. I guess I should hold off on playing the lottery for a while too.

One of my Sunday afternoon nap fantasies is “What would you do if you had a Billion dollar windfall?” Return on investment doesn’t matter - just do something with money - but it has to be possible in the real world.

One mental exercise is to approach Ricoh with an offer to inject enough capital into Imaging to expand the Pentax brand as we wish on these threads. They could issue privately to me some sort of Convertible Preferred with Warrants tied to Pentax performance.

In my dreams I think $50 million would do.
