hello all, im going on a hike in the scenic Derbyshire Dales this coming Friday. I will of course be taking my iSTDL* , my tripod and release cable along with cir/pol ,solid ND and lastly, Skylight 1B filter.
My dilema however is this- which lense/s ? I have 28mm smc M 2.8, smc A 50mm f2 , smc M 50mm 1.7 and finally smc A f4-5.6 35-80mm. I do have longer lenses but no filters to fit so i will leave those at home. There will be wide expanses of countryside as well as some nice waterfalls. I want to travel as light as possible as it will be a long walk and i have a spine like a string of conkers !! Your suggestions are greatly appreciated in advance.

Thanks to all for the great advice. I especially like the pointer from Sterretje regarding CIF, i had no idea about this and have already been trying it out in my garden with resulting images being sharper than usual !! I have until August to practice the method and hopefully on the day i can shoot some good keepers. Seems to work with both A and M lenses.

thanks for all the great advice regarding new-born pics. John, I have the pentax istDL or i can go with film on the ME super . From all the input, and limited finance, I think the recommendation of the 50mm 1.7 stopped down to 2.8 will be the choice. Oh....hcc.., what is CIF ?

Hello to everyone, I have a question......My daughter is to be blessed with a baby in August and i want to take some intimate shots of mum and new-born while still in hospital in a kind of portrait style. What lense do you reccommend and what focal length . My fastest is the SMC 50mm 1.7 but i do have a 2x converter, I also have two 70-200 4.5 and one up to 310mm@ 5.6 but im thinking that, without flash, they are no good. Please......any advice how to shoot this moment and make it memorable ?

thanks Aurele, let me try and understand ( im new to dslr )............are you saying i take one shot without NR and then shoot another with N reduction on ? Please forgive my ignorance and be patient as i am new to photography and having a hard time grasping all that requires taking good photos as opposed to snapshots. Thanks for the link to the manual...i only wish it was easier for this novice to understand.

Ive been using my istdl for long daylight exposures of 30-45seconds @ f8-f16 with nd filters. My resulting images have a kind of speckled noise on them and im wondering if this is a result of the sensor getting warm ? I have mirror up facility on the camera but i think this is for cleaning purposes...not really sure. Any advice ? Thanks.

DIY ND filter

Hello everybody, I am seeking a 10 stop ND filter. When I looked at the cost of a quality filter i was astounded so i googled diy nd filter. An article suggested using 2 circular polarizers. Mount the 1st pol on the lens then unscrew the retaining ring on the 2nd filter and reverse the glass, having done this you then mount the 2nd pol on the 1st one and hey-presto..........ND. I took some test shots with it in broad daylight and needed speeds around 30-45 seconds at f8-f11. There is a big problem though.........the shots have a horrible red/magenta colour cast. My original idea was to capture the mood of a cloudy winter sky moving fast so that i could convert to black and white, either in lightroom 2 or NIK silver efex pro. Do you have any step by step instructions on how to remove the colour cast ?

Many thanks to all that have given me advice. I did try substituting one lithium for alkaline and all was OK, I then put all the lithiums back in and the camera worked fine. I will invest in the Eneloops as per your proposal and as well as saving money..........hopefully the problem wont arise again. And thanks Stone.G, I read Mangustas thread and it was very interesting although a little too techy for my old brain...........I think i will dream about an upgrade to the K5..............some day.

CAN ANYONE HELP. I inserted new lithium batteries into my istDL and the battery symbol constantly flashes. Also, nothing works on the camera yet when i insert my old, almost depleted Alkaline batteries all the cameras functions and displays are there !! The expiry date on the new lithium is 2025. I have used lithiums in the camera regularly without any problem until tonight. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Stormtech , it does look nice even though some people dont like the Clarity knocking down that far.........works for me though.
Thankyou too Philbaum, I shall try your suggestions except for the crop as it is heavily cropped anyway. The Black and white conversion was done with a Lightroom preset that mimmicks specific b+w film types. Here is the original pic.

Thank you all for the helpful tips. I look forward to going out and shooting with these films and if all goes well i might shoot film as well as digital. There are a couple of points im not sure of however......,rwe0112 you say you have pushed it to 800 , as a beginner im not sure what this means and titrisol........do you mean use the eraser in the film compartment and if so, what does this do ? Forgive my ignorance .

can any pentaxians offer sound advice ? I have dug out an old pentax ME super 35mm camera and there were two rolls of film {35mm } still boxed and within date. They are Ilford delta 100 and Ilford FP4 125. My question is this.............I want to go out and try this camera and film but dont know which shooting situation suits each particular film ? It is almost winter here in England now and light is still good but fading week by week. I would like to go into the woods and do some moody shots in b+w but afraid the film wont cope with the lack of light. Please help.

thanks for the info. Having taken your advice and googled it, the DUTO is primarily for portrait work as it creates a soft focus effect but as my pictures suffer with this anyway I dont think i will need to use it
