This is a good philosophy when practical. With Pentax it is not as there are so few Brick and Mortar stores that carry the brand. Where I live there is one store that carries the line and difference in price between Amazon and the store was about $400. That also is not practical unless one has the money to burn.
I have bought all my Pentax equipment including a K-5 at Amazon with no problems.
In fact I have yet to have any problem with Amazon. I have read problems with the "warehouse" Amazon deals though.

I would agree. All this talk of a FF is just non-sense IMHO. That is not the target market of Pentax for now. That could change under Ricoh, but how much time are you talking about waiting?

I have no doubt Ricoh will keep the Pentax name in the short term until all their plans get worked out. To me it makes sense to keep the Pentax name in the long term as well, but how many things in the corporate world make sense?

I concur. I recently bought a P&S and eliminated Pentax in short order for a variety of reasons. I hope Ricoh can actually sort through, develop and communicate a niche for each. Then throw in some real marketing! So much potential! Does management have what it takes? It will be very interesting to see how things develop.

This is a matter of is the glass half full or half empty? They may have kept the brand alive and produced some good recent cameras, but so much was left on the table. Their lens line-up was neglected as just one example and marketing was close to non-existent. Who knows what could have been? Hopefully Ricoh will see the potential and think longer term when making decisions.

This is right on target. This could be a good thing if managed well. I've been hoping they were bought out by somebody with deeper pockets and the desire to increase market share. The Pentax brand has so much going for it that has not been utilized. Indeed get back into at least some B&M stores to get some brand recognition. In that regard I'm not sure how much Ricoh's distribution system can help. Can't say I've ever seen a Ricoh in a B&M either. Or even seen an ad for Ricoh now that I think about it.
It is troubling to think that Ricoh probably signed off on the Q system and I hope that is not a precursor of things to come. My fingers are crossed. It does make me put a hold on any further Pentax purchases until we get more of a road map though. I love my K-5 and don't mind being an oddity in my photo club, but I have always wondered how long Pentax would last with their tiny market share and Hoya's handcuffs. Unless I see a commitment to the Pentax brand from Ricoh, I will need to rethink my commitment.

What he said. IMHO they should have taken these $ and put it into marketing and getting back into some B&M stores first somehow. Especially for a new concept camera like this people are going to want to hold and feel the thing. Pentax wants to see a direct ROI on any marketing $, and yet they developed this long shot? Another niche market that gives further question to what their market is. Define a market and excel at it until such time as you have the $ to expand your niche. Plus the pricing makes no sense as others have said. You can get much more for your dollar in just a compact P&S. Doesn't even have a built in view finder! So what if it is the smallest in it's class by just a few mm?? Just makes it that much harder to hold.
On a separate thread somebody suggested Panasonic should buy out Pentax. All I can say is somebody with deeper pockets and/or more commitment to the brand along with a real marketing department could propel Pentax forward by leaps.

Another thanks for what seems like an unbiased user review. You are undoubtedly an even rarer breed than a Pentaxian in that you use both!
I also would doubt Pentax will ever make a FF. That just isn't their market. That said, I get confused on what it is and have an easier time figuring out what it is not. So in that respect the two lines cannot really be compared. I have a similar thought on your comments about lenses...for the same $ you can get much more compared with Canikon. I have the 17 - 70 and get excellent results. If you are a pro and have the money to spend on L lenses then great, but otherwise I would argue the ROI is so small.

Great work. In terms of where Pentax invests $ relative to return one can also argue that in order to expand their presence they need to expand their line up PERIOD in order to compete with Canikon. If they combined an expanded lens line-up with real marketing who knows what would happen. Sure would like to see them take a chance on that but alas I fear the odds of that are slim.
I sure wish we knew somebody from Pentax was monitoring this forum for input like this at any rate.

To me the next lens priority is a super telephoto though I personally have no need. The price would be high but so many complaints about that void. They used to make one that got great reviews. You'd think they just dust off those specs.

Yikes. You are a liberal and were impressed by those dingbats? Obama has confused me on some things but to blame him for basically everything? You are surely being sarcastic. Especially Bachman. She and Palin are both wack jobs and have very strange/ignorant ideas of right, wrong and American history.
I apologize if you were being sarcastic....

Nikon has better zooms according to who? I would argue that is far from true as well. I have looked at many reviews of Canikon lenses compared with Pentax and until you spend over a grand for their best lenses, Pentax does better. And you even see the difference? In most cases probably not and most likely nothing you can't fix in post processing.
What Nikon does have is a greater selection and I sure wish Pentax would fix that so the brand has more appeal to pros as well....but Pentax does not seem after that market for whatever reason.

If anyone uses Zenfolio, they just hooked up with Borrowlenses and right now you get 10% off your first order and free shipping. Actually quite the deal as shipping is expensive.

There are a total of 13 retailers in the U.S. selling the K-5 according to the Pentax website, several of which are on-line only. Never looked at that before. Yikes. Even at B&H another Pentaxian wrote the area devoted to Pentax is tiny compared to Canikon and even Olympus/Sony.

That's what I think is interesting too....one of the selling points typically brought up is it's smaller size. For most of my shooting I can't see wanting it....however I will doing Sr. Portraits this summer and it would nice for that I'm sure. Unless you have money to burn, I can see wanting it only if you have big hands, do extended shooting (though how many extra batteries can you buy for the price of the grip), or do portrait work.

So will any photos that are not still life and win be disqualified after the fact? How is that going to work? Hope folks are using good judgement so that's not even an issue.

Unless you need a fast lens, the 50 - 135 is stellar and offers the flexibility of a zoom. It is what I use for all my portrait work. Love it!

As others have said, there are photos that clearly are not still life and others are questionable. There should be a filtering process before they are put up for voting. I disqualified a good number before placing my votes.

I am planning a trip out west in July that will include a stop in Utah. Also spending a day with a pro photographer in Taos by the name of Geraint Smith. Can't wait to really test out the K-5.
