You should get an inexpensive wireless remote, and use mirror lock up. But whatever you did, these really are outstanding. And the compositions are great. It is a wonderful exposition of looking at something, and really seeing it.

$1.00 for 3 minutes of air dates this to rather recent, though. :) I think it cost... well, free back then.

But you were still able to use a flash? That's an astonishing amount of trust from the bird.

Seems like a small shim in the flash mount would accomplish the same thing, and actually allow you to remove the viewfinder if you wanted to.

Hah! Well, that's one on me. Thanks for the education. :) I guess I've been Pentax for so long, I didn't follow other systems.

Looks like you (or someone) uses the Canon for macro; that reversing ring gets around the problem with the mount not being Pentax! Although, the reversing ring doesn't seem to be for a Pentax, either.

I have one of these. It's a *little* wobbly fully extended with something heavy, but with a flash it's very useful.

So, the TC is not the Pz-AF MC4, correct? It looks like it says Tamron-F AF, and I don't think that is reviewed here, is it?

Fine Focus Adjustment on K1

Ok, I have tried a few other lenses I own with DimC's method ("Dot-tune"), with these results:

LensFocal LengthApertureRange of "dot" focusFocus adj value chosenDAL 55-3003005.8-3 to +10+4DA 50mm501.8-2 to -10-6DA 35mm352.4+1 to +9+5FA100 macro1002.8-6 to +60

I was originally a little concerned with the 100 macro, it is my sharpest lens, and originally tested at +3 to -9. But I tested it again, and got -6 and +6, and I believe it. I'm a little concerned that the +10 and -10 in the ranges above aren't really the end of the ranges, but Pentax only gives that much adjustment. From a quick glance at the Pentax K1 manual, it doesn't look like that has changed for the FF body.

Fine Focus Adjustment on K1

... (nice list of steps omitted for brevity)

Yes, all good suggestions, and all those steps are what I have done. Like I said, I'm an engineer, and a stickler for details. The adjustments were done as individual adjustments. But as a test, I also reset all settings, and then redid all the tests with both global and individual.

But I think, now that I have done DimC's test, and saw that the camera couldn't achieve focus on some negative steps of adjustment, I think I understand what is going on. In fact, there probably is indeed a difference between the adjustment steps, visually, using a angled chart. BUT. I plan to use the 55-300 mostly at 300, and at 5.8 (maximum aperture of the lens at that focal length, too much DoF at that aperture, and of course not the sharpest aperture for the lens (DxOMark tests notwithstanding)) I don't think there was enough *visible* difference between the steps (at least for me), especially since DimC's tests confirmed some degree of back focus, and showed that I didn't have enough correction steps to fully bring the acceptable focus to 50% in front, and 50% in back.

All and all, this has been an interesting exercise, and I'm going to try some other of my lenses with DimC's test, only because the other tests -- 3 different kinds of angled tests, and the Moire test -- never really gave me the feedback that I was looking for.

I am interested in anyone else who has tried to focus-adjust a DAL 55-300 at 300, however, to see if they have a different result than I. But of course, different copies of the lens are going to focus differently, because I understand that while they are all acceptably within 'spec', there is a rather wide band of acceptability.

So, you assumed the same thing I did: that if you had more steps, the next one would be out of focus. It's too bad there isn't an empirical way to determine this, but Pentax just didn't give enough steps.

Ok, I'm always game to try a new technique. First, this technique is interesting, and actually demonstrated some differences in the adjustment, which no other test did (at least, not very obviously.) Second, the video is rather skewed to Canon and Nikon cameras (Pentax adjustment for the K3 only goes -10 to +10, not -20 to +20), but I understand that's a larger market. Third, it seems to work, but I found no out of focus points in any of the positive values. I did, however, find that -3 did not show focus confirmation. So, assuming that +11 (which I don't have) would have been out of focus, we get an acceptable range of -2 to +10. Midrange of +4, according to your calculator. It certainly won't hurt, and it is the first test that shows some differences, so thanks for that. I'll try +4, and although I may not see any improvement, I'll feel better about it. :)

Also, as a followup, I did upgrade to 1.30, with no appreciable difference.

No, thanks, I am very careful with that. I've been a software engineer for 40 years, so I am very OCD about following procedures. :). At any rate, I just updated the firmware to 1.30, and I'll try this again tomorrow. I'm a little nonplussed that nobody else has complained about the micro adjustment not doing anything, though. In fact, when I go and change the adjustment back, it shows the previous setting I saved, so I know I'm using the OK button after changing it.

I know this is an ancient thread, and I apologize, but I have a new (well, new to me) DAL 55-300, and, while the focus is ok, I'd like to know if it could be a bit better, So, I've tried all, and I mean *all* the charts and techniques that I've been able to find, and, as far as I can tell, the micro adjustment does *nothing* on my K3 and DAL 55-300. In fact, in the past using F and FA lenses, I couldn't see much difference, if any, going from +10 to 0 to -10. I'm thinking it's possibly a firmware issue; I'm using 1.11 in an original K3. But really, I've tried using +10 and -10, (obviously only with the viewfinder), tried power cycling the camera between settings, but the difference is non-obvious, with both a flat and angled target. I seem to have a minor back focusing on most of my lenses, but the center is still in focus, as far as I can tell. Why am I worried? Well, I shouldn't be, I suppose. It's just that other folks have indicated that changing the microfocus adjustment makes a HUGE difference, and I just don't see it, no matter how hard I try.

I was wondering about that myself, but (from absolute ignorance) I'm guessing the one with the larger viewfinder and the larger metering cell on the front is the Big C. But I have no basis at all for my guess, and I've decided not to use Google. :)

And what happens if you use different focal length lenses on each of the mounts? Or different filters. Certainly, you wouldn't get what was intended, but it might be interesting...

In the late 60's, the Auto S2 was the first camera I ever had. I've looked into getting another one from eBay from time to time for nostalgia's sake, now that it's been nearly 50 years. But I'd like it to be in excellent condition, and with ebay, you just don't know what you are going to get. The batteries for the meter are a pain now, too.
