If they fixed it, what about all us "beta testers"? Do we get one of the new ones? If they fixed it, I will be happy, but will be VERY dissapointed if they don't make it right for all of us that have been stuck with this obvious problem all along.

Sometimes -
I always get it under low, artificial light indoors, but I only shoot under those conditions sometimes... usually I am shooting outdoors, and it works beautifully there.

So they acknowledge the problem, suggest a non-fix, and they are off the hook? Will they give me my money back so I can buy a camera from a manufacturer that is honest?

Anyone heard anything new? I haven't been shooting as much. I feel like an idiot for keeping this camera... I should have returned it for a refund while I was still in my return window. But I held off, and the comments by Adam that a fix was coming helped me to make that decision. I am disappointed in myself that I trusted an internet forum source.

We need to keep this at the top of the pile, and hold Pentax Japan to task.

Has anyone received a recent K-r that does not exhibit this behavior? I am curious if Pentax has possibly done a silent hardware fix, using the early adopters as their beta testers...

I don't understand why those with perfectly functioning cameras won't do simple tests, so that those of us, when told our cameras are "functioning perfectly" can have some evidence to share with CRIS and Pentax that our particular unit is not focusing as well as a Kr can.

All the talk about fan boy this, and hater that is so destructive to this brand, and model... the truth is, all of us just want a properly functioning unit, and are willing to work with Pentax to get one... it is also true that the reports of perfectly focusing units are the exception rather than the rule (FF), so when we hear someone has a good one, it is good to have evidence of that for our own fights.

PLEASE, when someone requests to see test evidence, don't automatically assume they are doing so to prove you wrong, or question your results... we just want HOPE that a perfectly (or near so) unit is possible.

You have been connected to Matthew P.
Matthew P: Thank you for contacting Pentax Chat Support. How may I help you?
Kevin : Hi Matthew
Kevin : I am a Pentax K-r Owner, curious there is word from Pentax Japan about a front focus fix for the K-r>
Kevin : Pentax Germany, France, UK, and Sweden all confirm they have heard that Pentax Japan is working on a fix
Kevin : trying to sort out internet Rumor from potential fact
Matthew P: Pentax has heard of the issue but as far as that being a known issue is concerned, we have not stated that.
Matthew P: We have heard of this issue though. Some customers say they have the issue and some say that have not so we are still trying to determine what they will do with the Kr if they are going to do anything at all for that.
Matthew P: You will see all updated news at PENTAX

Kevin : ty
Matthew P: You're very welcome.
Matthew P: Do you have any more questions?

Kevin : yes
Kevin : if they decide to "do nothing at all"
Kevin : what recource do I have?
Kevin : I will try CRIS once, but if that doesn't resolve my problem, what are my options?
Matthew P: If you happen to recieve a Kr that has these issues, we need you to send the camera in. Not only for warranty repair but for research for the future Kr models.
Kevin : I find the AF un-useable in tungsten, and low indoor light
Kevin : Future Kr models?
Kevin : is there a plan to release a Kr v2?
Matthew P: No. Just for future production.
Kevin : If this is fixed in future production runs, am I entitled to a new camera from a new run?
Matthew P: This will be done on a case to case basis. I cannot give you that answer. I don't know what Pentax would do at that moment.
Kevin : OK, I can certainly send the camera in, but with all this talk of a potential firmware fix, and with a recent one for a similar (?) condition in the K-5, I am hesitant to send it in for fear it will be fixed by firmware soon
Matthew P: Well, all we can do is check PENTAX for the update.
Kevin : Also, while I understand that it is important for Pentax to evaluate cameras with the condition, from what I have read, it is present in EVERY K-r
Kevin : some people either don't see it, or don't understand how to re-produce it
Kevin : or simply have a lower tolerance for critical sharpness
Matthew P: I understand. CRIS would test the camera when we get it and see if there is infact an issue with your particular model.
Kevin : what I mean to say is Pentax should have plenty of samples to test for the condition, and not need mine to evaluate for improvements in future production runs
Kevin : OK, again, I have read of more than 5 people sending it into CRIS without resolution for the same issue
Kevin: it ends up feeling like throwing shit against a wall just to see if it sticks, if you know what I mean
Kevin: Also, the "{Pentax needs your camera sent into CRIS} for research for future Kr models" rubs me the wrong way
Kevin : are all of us early adopters (and not even early, this camera has been out for some time now) beta testers for future production runs?!?
Matthew P: It's if your camera is having that specific issue...You must send it in for repair. It's not sending it in for research, im just telling you that we can take your cameras issues into account if they were going to create a firmware update for this.
Matthew P: Yes all early Kr models are looked into for researching any potential issue.
Kevin : OK, thanks for your time today
Matthew P: You're very welcome. Do you have any other questions?
Kevin : no, I guess not
Kevin : have a good day
Matthew P: You too. Thank you for using Pentax.

Another week gone by, and still nothing.

I also am noticing the tendency to clip highlights a lot lately. It wouldn't be so bad if the raw file contained any measurable headroom, but I am not finding this to be the case at all... you almost need to underexpose on this camera to maintain any highlight retention at all... goes against the "expose to the right" I have always heard, and found successful.

I don't know what to do, I think with the ff fixed, I could live with it. I am hesitant to send it into CRIS and be without my camera, but now that the return window has closed, I might not be able to return. REALLY want Pentax to take this camera (and issue) seriously, and issue a statement. I was very positive when the K-05 fix came out, but that has been almost a month ago now?

PENTAX, if you are listening, your hard earned customers are losing faith! Come out with a statement, and make us all feel like choosing PENTAX was a good decision.

Thanks for the very good analogy. I don't understand the folks who say just go out and shoot, I am doing that!!! I would also like to be able to confidently use my camera indoors, and right now, I can't. The out of focus images occur in about 85% of all my indoor shots that have ANY artificial light, not just tungsten... This occurs to about EV6... not low light afaic. Also, my wife should be able to pick up the new, "expensive" camera I had to convince her was going to be great, and get in focus images when using the "Auto Pict" setting... she can't, and that is a shame.

Do really consider this an option? I hope you say this in jest. For 1, compact fluorescents put out horrible light quality, nothing like good even, warm tungsten light. Second, I shouldn't need to go out and buy a house full of new lightbulbs to make my new $850 camera work right within specs!

You have been connected to Randall S.
Randall S: Thank you for contacting Pentax chat support Kevin, how may I help you?
Kevin Dufresne: Hi Randall, any new news about the K-r front focusing fix?
Kevin Dufresne: the K-5 got their firmware fix for it about 2 weeks ago, and I had heard the K-r fix was soon to follow, but nothing yet
Randall S: no, we haven't had any word from Pentax Japan yet about this.
Kevin Dufresne: do you have any way of communicating with them directly to inquire about whether a fix is even planned?
Kevin Dufresne: the issue is quite pervasive, even at EV 5-6
Kevin Dufresne: even in higher f-stops like f5-7
Randall S: We sent up sample images to them bu, no, we don't have that level of access to their product developers. They will niotify us if or when they have a new version of firmware for the camera.
Kevin Dufresne: Have you been hearing this more lately?
Kevin Dufresne: seems to be a universal problem, but could be a few dozen vocal voices online... just trying to judge the possibility that it may be unit specific
Randall S: you can test your camera and lens with a focus test chart. It's possible the problem you're having is specific to your camera.
Kevin Dufresne: mine certainly exhibits it, but am hesitant to send it in and be without the camera for a few weeks... might change my mind if you had heard reports of CRIS being able to fix it
Kevin Dufresne: I tested using focus chart, and also notice it in normal indoor shots under most artificial light
Kevin Dufresne: the focus chart tests were very controlled...
Randall S: you'd have to send us the camera and lens to examine and determine if the camera is operating within specifications.
Kevin Dufresne: tripod, 2 second release (MLU), center focus point only, etc
Kevin Dufresne: I guess what I am trying to understand is if there has been anyone to your knowledge that sent in their camera to CRIS, and had the FF resolved?
Kevin Dufresne: from my reading in the usual sources (dpreview, pentaxforums, steves digicams), seemingly, the answer is no
Randall S: That I couldn't say since it would depend on the nature of the problem. If the autofocus system just needs to be recalibrated to bring it in to factory specs. it would have been taken care of.
Kevin Dufresne: I have no way to verify the validity of those claims though, and you as a Pentax representative, could have info that would help me to make the call of whether I am comfortable being without my camera for 3 weeks during the spring.
Kevin Dufresne: Well, I guess the simple question is does Pentax recognize the existence of a FF issue, other than normal calibration? I think normal calibration is not wise since the camera focus quite well outdoors.
Randall S: All we can do is check the camera to see if it is operating within the factory specifications. If it's not, we would perform necessary repairs to bring it in to specs.
Randall S: Pentax Japan has not informed us of a problem with the K-R autofocus in low tungsten light.
Kevin Dufresne: And I would send the camera in if there was any possibility that the camera could be adjusted to within factory spec
Kevin Dufresne: but before I do that, I am trying to find evidence of anyone else (and there are hundreds from what I can gather with this problem) who has had such a positive effect sending it into CRIS
Kevin Dufresne: can you appreciate my reasoning?
Kevin Dufresne: It just seems silly to send a camera in that cannot be brought within spec and the only thing that will fix it is either Firmware, or hardware replacement
Randall S: I would suggest you inquire about that in the forums you're reading. I don't know that these customers have ever sent their cameras in to us for examination.
Kevin Dufresne: I think you are missing my point Randall, although I do appreciate you trying to help
Randall S: We advise any customer who contacts us with a suspected problem in their cameras to send it in to us to be examined.
Kevin Dufresne: Forget about the forum members
Randall S: Until we see your camera, we don't know why its not autofocusing properly.
Kevin Dufresne: Yes, and with that legacy of customers sending in their K-r, have you had a single camera sent in for FF under tungsten, returned and fixed to the customer's (any customers) satisfaction?
Kevin Dufresne: CRIS must keep records
Randall S: you're welcome to contact CRIS and inquire. their toll-free number is 877-269-7179.
Kevin Dufresne: super, thanks

Add me to the list of folks who are waiting...

I don't believe folks that minimize the issue... my focus outdoors is great, indoors, in anything below about EV5-6, it FF like a MF! Even with the kit lens at higher f stops.

I agree the the most disheartening thing about it is that PentaxUSA won't even address the issue exists.
