As far as I remember when tested the pre-production one, when you change to 35mm cropped mode, the LCD will auto show the equivalent FOV of 35mm as well. I've checked my file, in RAW file, the resolution also be auto cropped down to 10.3Mp along with 35mm equivalent FOV.

Just curious if the AF speed and accuracy difference between K5 and K5IIs is also be reduced due to the old screwed / SDM lens capability limitation. Please also try to compare AF relating aspects on the 18-135WR DC lens!

Thanks Adam!

My previous test using P-TTL Metz 48AF-1 90 degree tilted with DA18-135WR (mostly at f5.6) at various distance without any issues.

I don't have FA31Ltd to test so I used the FA35/2. Tested at Av | Multi segments mettering Mode | ISO200 | f2 with Metz48 - 90 degree tilted with subject is my kids at 2m away. The result is also good without any over exposure. I tried the same combination at about 1.5m with both Center weighted as well as Multi-segments mettering mode and the results are also good.

I don't know whether there is any compartible issue between the Pentax flash and the K-5 or not.

Just updated last night and did some testing. This is my updates:

1. The bouce flash P-TTL mode (using Metz 48AF-1) works well without any overexpose
2. The Wireless P-TTL flash mode (built-in flash control Metz 48AF-1) works well without any overexpose.

K-7 High ISO Success!

Hi Yosemite,

I've always turned Hightlight correction on all the time. These high/low key settings are also my default settings both for daylight and low light shooting.

Personally, I don't think my settings generate pink-magenta halos/bands as you mentioned cause it won't affect RAW. That pink-magenta halos/bands problem might happen with default settings as well (at high ISO) because it is probably the saturation in some RGB channels. I think, the higher ISO, the lower Dynamic range is available, therefore it is easier to be blew highlight at high contrast area. By turn on Highlight correction, you reduce the blow highlight problem therefore, probably, help to reduce pink-magenta halos/bands problem as well.

Regards,
Hoang

Hi Yosemite:

Adam's setting applies Strong NR and to me, it kills a bit too much detail. Medium NR does a much better job in this. In my first post in this topic, I provided a comparision and you can esily see the difference.

Regarding to the Exposure value, understood that my approach seems to have the same Jpeg Exposure value with the about 0.7-1Ev lower ISO stop. However, what I would like to know is whether the Exposure that K-7 Jpeg provide to us is the same as the RAW Exposure value. If it is the same then yes, my aproach doesn't have much advantages.

I've brought this matter up in this post.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/106600-k-7-high-is...ml#post1723379

Cause no one would like to check, I did the simple test myself. The result show me that the RAW exposure value seems to be 0.7-1Ev lower than the Jpeg Exposure value. This is my test result.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/106600-k-7-high-is...ml#post1726875

So if my finding is correct, K-7 Jpeg engine pulls Jpeg Exposure up for about 0.7-1Ev from its RAW Exposure (to me this RAW exposure might be closer to Exposure value that the sensor is actually received). And I just bring its Jpeg exposure back to actual (so call sensor) exposure.

My finding might not be accurate, therefore, if anyone of you is interested in finding the real performance of K-7 (which mentioned by most of the Reviews: K-7 RAW noise performance is equivalent to its competitors in its class.) you could do your testing and share with us the result (it is better to have some pictures) whether it is good or bad!

Thank you all for your discussion.

Is it me or my camera? :(

Yes! Totally agree! The mettering and exposure are vary depend on subjects and scene to be shot. My sugestion is just to mention about the basic one it means that rather than stick on 0Ev as Pentax do as based line, he could shift it to let say +0.7Ev as based line! When be come more advance, he can do compensate for specific (let say dark or bright, high contrast or large or small amount size,.....) subjects with +/- some Ev from the based line above. Also want to note that I'm still using Multi-Segments Mettering (as he is using) more often and just sometime switch to Spot mettering for some specific shooting condition.

Shooting RAW is like playing with knife. If one knows exactly what he do, he could get the best result in PP. However, if one just thinks that he can just shoot with correct focus and then correct everything else (WB, Exposure,...) later, I'm afraid that it will make amatuers get lost and don't pay attention to do the thing right at first! It also means that he could not learn fast enough.

PS: I learn a lot by reviewing the histogram of pictures I took beside learning the metering and exposure rule.

I've looked at your EXIF and Histogram of those first pictures you uploaded and found out that beside the Auto picture mode, you were also using Multi Segments Metering mode. Your pictures are still a bit underexposed to me. Having using K-x for a preriod time before, I found out that K-x tends to underexpose by about 0.7Ev which make the pictures seem to be a bit mute. By apply +0.7 Ev in Ev compesation, you might have better result. By apply +0.7Ev compensation, it is easy to get blow hightlight therefore, I also usually turn Hightlight correction on. As many people mentioned above, doing metering to have a correct exposure is one of the key things to get pleasure looks pictures.

I rarely shoot RAW (as well as rarely do Post Processing) and rarely use Vibrant settings cause I found out that it push too much Yellow into the picture which tend to make skintone looks unnatural. Personally, when people is main object: I use Portrait and when landscape is main object: I use Vibrant mode. I think Bright mode (my default settings) is quite balance between Portrait and Vibrant.

Here are some pictures when I still using K-x (my first DSLR) for your reference (most of my pictures are just simply resized from the direct out of camera JPEG). I'm just a newbie in photography therefore, don't look at the content or composition of my pictures but the exposure and WB only for your reference. You can see their EXIF in my Flickr.

Cause no one helps on this, I need to find the answer for myself. I've done a quick test using FA35/2, ISO800, Multi Segments Metering. The pictures were taken in RAW+ mode (RAW and JPEG at the same time). The RAW files then were developed using CameraRAW CS5 with different settings.

This is what I foud out (all EXIF data with Histogram remained for your reference)

1. Picture 1: K-7 Default settings - JPEG
2. Picture 2: RAW file developed using CameraRAW default settings (Brightness +50/ Contrast +25)
3. Picture 3: RAW file developed using CameraRAW settings with all set to 0.
4. Picture 4: RAW file taken at +0.7Ev Compensation developed using CameraRAW settings with all set to 0.

So, it seem to me that K-7 does underexpose the pictures (RAW result) by about 0.7-1Ev then using Hi/Low key adjustment to bring it back to normal Exposure in JPEG result. Therefore, it is your choise to either using K-7 JPEG approach or using my approach or even RAW approach.

Best regards,

Here is quick comparision between ISO1600/+0.3Ev with default Hi/Low key to ISO2500 and ISO3200 with Hi/Low -4 / +1Ev (0.7Ev difference) for you self comparision. I think the advantage is still equivalent to 0.3Ev comparing to normal settings.

PS: Could anyone help to compare between K-7 with different older bodies (K100/200, K10/20) to see with the same lighting condition/subject/lens/aperture if K-7 having higher speed or not? I'm just curious to see if K-7 intentionally actually underexpose the picture and using the High/Low key to boost back the same light as previous bodies or not.

Thanks

I don't think it is complicated. Instead of setting +2 or -2 from 0Ev as you often do now it is equivalent to +3 and -1. That's it.
