Hi gaz. I look forward to seeing your pictures, If you are on facebook, check out aurora borealis notifications group, they have some great links for beginners for taking pics of the Northern lights. To help keep your feet warmer, take a piece of cardboard to stand on. Also if you don't have a remote for your camera use the two second timer on your camera, it can make a big difference in a crisp picture of the northern lights a a blurry pic.

Hi all,
I purchased a used DA*16-50 to use on my K30 and the autofocus doesn't seem to be working.. I was wondering if someone could answer some questions about this lens. When I have it on full auto, should I not hear/feel it trying to focus? With the quick shift is there a wrong way to turn the focus ring. I thought I understood that you press the shutter half way to have it auto focus and then when its locked you can turn the focus ring to fine tune it(making sure the shutter release is kept half way down) Can it be turned all the way around or should it be turned all the way around? should I be rotating it in either clockwise or counter clockwise to focus? The copy I have seems to almost drag if I have it on auto or manual. The focus ring doesn't seem freely move as some of my other lenses. It seems to work fine on manual focus. I have returned it to the seller, but I am just wondering for the little bit I saved on price if I should just bite the bullet and buy new and maybe have better luck?

Hi Gary,
my bit of advice is not to walk but run away from this!! You might get some nice shots but I can tell you from being the bride and not hiring someone with more experience that I didn't get the photos that you see all over the web, ect. . That being said, a photographer was something that we could not afford to hire for my wedding day, I had my older sister take pictures. so I do also have a special memory of that it was my big sister taking the photos(there was lots of laughter that day:p). In fact it was her that help me catch this photography bug that has since been draining my savings account due to LBA. In fact, as we are learning our cameras more and more together we shake our head at how little we really did know about photography( and still do). Now from the photographer's point of view, I did take pictures of my first and only ever wedding last summer, it was for my brother, this was just a small redneck wedding, out at their hunting cabin, I did manage to get a few nice shots but it was very few in my opinion, the bride was thrilled with them of course, but if you do decide to go ahead and try and do this, please realize a few things, you will not enjoy the ceremony, or any of the associated festivites, because you will be too busy planning your shots, trying to take photographs, ect. Now for some advice, I found the local library a great source of information for books on wedding photography, some good ones are out there for different posing ideas ect. Creative Live is awesome! I have watched several of their courses. Good luck with the 50, I am assuming manual focus, my only word of advice with that one is practice practice practice. People are not an stationary object and have no patience for sitting waiting while you are trying to focus in your lens manually. Wishing you all the best of luck
Faye

I was so excited to be getting this lens, This was my first big $$ purchase..even though I had read the reviews and the sdm failure seemed to be hit and miss, I decided to go ahead an order it. I got it in the mail today and eagerly got home only to find that it wont autofocus. so dissapointed tonight . I purchased it from a reputable dealer in Canada or so I thought, it was rated as 8+(90-99% of original finish. Used very little, but obviously used. No major marring of the finish or brassing. Optics perfect. Mechanics perfect.) The front of the lens where I would set my distance(forgive me, total newbie here) just spins right around so I think something is obviusly broken besides the fact that it wont autofocus. the packaging of the lens wasnt the greatest, and I am debating about should I just return the darn thing and get my money back, or should I send it in for repair. If I send it away for repair, does anyone know approx how long this will take here in Canada? and with the packaging being questionable, it was rolling around in the box a fair amount even though it was wrapped in bubble wrap and then had the plastic air bags in the box, a couple of them were deflated when I received the package. Is there the potential for even more damage that I may not be seeing? Also if I do send it away, have they really fixed the issue with the SDM? Thanks for any input

thanks for the information, I decided to take the plunge and have purchased it, I got it for half the price that B&H is listing it new for, Ironically Henrys in canada has it listed for $1100 instead of $1495. Hopefully I have made the right decsion :). How do I tell when the lens was made?

The SDM motor some, I figure if I bought extened warranty for 3yrs I should be good to go. but ya the quality in low light, more specifically taking star pictures at 16mm.

Hey there, I have had my k-x out at about -20 C taking pictures at night and here are a few pointers that I have found helpful from other people.
1. keeping the batteries warm-the cold just zaps the life out of your batteries get some of the hand warmers and keep them with the batteries this helps keep them active longer.
2. when you are outside with the camera try not to breathe on the camera as it will quickly fog up your lens.
3. As mentioned change in temperature, when I am done taking pictures for the night, before I bring it into the warmth of my truck/house I put it in a ziploc bag with a couple of the silicone packs and put it in my camera bag and leave it closed until the next day to help take out any moisture.
Hope this helps

I was out taking pics of the lights on Tuesday night..I found that my best shots came with shorter time..any where from 5 to 10 sec and exposure about 400..on darker nights with no moon I have been getting pretty good pics with about a 20 to 30 seconds. I was so bummed out that it was cloudy here in the peace river area last night..some of the pics that are being posted on facebook are just amazing. Hoping tonight will be clear..Here is a link for the aurora forecast for canada. Current Regional Geomagnetic Conditions helps me decide if I'm going to stay up late :)
