Tip for Connecting to Monitor

Well, like I said it did connect once but only with great difficulty. The camera does connect easily with the same cable to my tv. When I try to connect to the monitor the camera reacts as if it is connected but the monitor does not display. Turn off the monitor and the camera comes back to display on the rear screen. Turn the monitor on and the back screen goes off but nothing comes on the monitor. I think it is a sync problem with the monitor but I have no idea as to why it worked once or how I can get it working again.

The reason I wanted to do this is I am using my camera on an 8 inch telescope and would like to use a monitor to see live view without touching or approaching the telescope.

Tip for Connecting to Monitor

I am wanting to connect my K-5 to a monitor using the HDMI output but it seems to have trouble syncing with the monitor. I played with it for some time and finally after multiple attempts it displayed in 640 mode then I was able to get it to display in the 720, 1080i and automatic modes. I turned every thing off and tried to connect a second time and could not get a display on the monitor.

I do have a television and it will work with the camera without trouble on HDMI. Is there some trick I have missed to getting a reliable display with the monitor?

When do you turn SR off?

Exactly! It simulates a stable camera by adjusting the sensor position. In 99 % of cases 'Image stabilization' is a misnomer. There are a few cameras with true image stabilization and if you've used it to your advantage you will understand.

In my old Olympus E-100rs I could get good results shooting moving cars down to about 1/80 of a second. (This gave some very interesting effects.) With other cameras I had to turn the IS or SR off and in that configuration it is tough to get results below 1/320 sec. Unfortunately there were no cameras that updated the Olympus E-100rs and it's 1.5 meg sensor was not enough any longer. So now I shoot Pentax.

I've written of this before, but paraphrasing. My experence, K-r mirror flopped. Things that seemed related, 1) low battery charge. Recharged battery and problem was reduced. 2) type of lens installed, Installed a lens with a metal base instead of the DAL it came with and problem went away. 3) Lens mount and lens contacts dirty. After cleaning problem ended, even when using the DAL kit lens.

I haven't been able to investigate further because after cleaning lens mount contacts the problem has not reoccurred. Low battery charge definitely made the problem worse.

Results on K-5 may be different. Some will say I'm wrong and I say to them PUTTH! Worked for me, that's all I know.

Stuck focus SMC F 28 f2.8

No, it's not the camera. The focus ring turns without the lens changing focus. The forward optical assembly does not turn or extend as it normally would. Actually I think that the lens got squeezed too hard, front to back, while it was in the bag and something was damaged in the focus mechanism.

Just wondering if there was someone out there who's experience I could benefit from.

When do you turn SR off?

I only turn off the SR when I am shooting panning action shots. Panning shots like the one posted will not work with SR on. I like the fact that Pentax uses the correct term (Shake Reduction) and not Image stabilization. ALL DLSR's I know of are trying to reduce shake, whether they call it that or not. I own a camera that does IMAGE Stabilization (Olympus E100-RS) but it is a mirrorless design which detects the subject and tries to stabilize it in the frame. It is processing the image BEFORE the shutter is triggered, and that is key to why DLSR's don't work this way. They can't because they don't have an image until the shutter is triggered.

All the cameras I have seen are not concerned with stabilizing the image as they are in simulating a stable camera. If your trying to move the camera and shoot it needs to be off.

Stuck focus SMC F 28 f2.8

Well, for what ever reason when I pulled my trusted SMC F 28 2.8 lens from my bag after a trip it failed to focus when I put it on my camera. The focus ring turns freely but there is no focusing going on. Does anyone have any tips on how to fix this? Obviously this lens is too valuable to trash and I have fixed lenses before. I pulled the mounting ring off the back but was not able to see anything obviously wrong and decided to get more information before trying anything further.

The problem is when someone uses it for more than just a quick 'hit'. Using "dust off" makes the nozzle cold very quickly and then condensation forms and joins the gas stream. At that point you have a problem. I have used it in just a very few quick puffs of less than a second and had good results. If your spots are more stubborn than that, find some other way.

I have been busy shooting dirt track auto racing in both natural light and artificial. So far my K-5 with Sigma 70-300 1:4-5.6 DL MACRO has been doing a satisfactory job. I also use an SMC F 35-105 for closer work. So far the high ISO performance has made up for most of the need to buy an f2.8 lens. Also the sealed body has kept the sensor clean in a unavoidably dusty environment.

Pentak k-r shutter problem!

Yes, that solved my problems as well. I think I said this in other threads, but I will repeat it here. Having more voltage from different batteries improved the problem, but cleaning the lens contacts fixed it completely.

Though having a fully charged battery helped reduce the problem, the big improvement came with cleaning the lens mount electrical contacts and using a different lens. I also switched from a DAL lens to a DA lens. I suspect the metal base makes a better connection just because I haven't had the trouble since the change.

Irfanview is free and much easier to use than 99% of programs out there. It's also more powerful than people give it credit for. There would be no need for this thread if basic users were not trying to use overly complex editing programs.

Of course if it's free, it can't be any good, Right!

I finally found that the mirror flop condition seemed to become better after I removed and cleaned the contacts on the DAL 18-55 lens. After that I replaced the DAL lens with a DA 18-55 after cleaning the lens mount contacts again. I have shot over 100 pictures since replacing the lens an have not had a 'mirror flop'. I do not know exactly how a lens problem could be causing the 'mirror flop' but it seems so.

Canon and Nikon SLR market share drops significantly in Japan

Strange, I thought having a mirror sort of defined a camera as an SLR. Video feed viewfinders don't make it as an SLR, though I seen cameras with them I liked. Range finders aren't SLRs. There are some good 'bridge' cameras that look like SLRs but this is just lazy reporting.

Yes & no. The problem seems the same but on my camera it happens when the battery is low but the people with the K-5's seem to be having trouble when the battery is newly charged.

Twitch, the camera was sold as needing repair and at a much reduced price. I have no complaints.

Pentak k-r shutter problem!

Sounds like we have the same problem. Have you tried charging the battery? Mine behaved normally when the battery is fully charged. When you put the fully charged battery into the camera there should be a click. then the camera will work normally for a while. Finally the mirror starts clicking at the wrong time and if you go to live view the mirror starts clicking repeatedly because it can not lock into the up position required for live view.

See message "Mirror Cycles At Wrong Time"

If someone knows a fix then we'll both be happy.

After a little more experimentation it appears that the mirror is failing to lock into position with anything less than fully charged batteries. If I put fully charged batteries into the camera the first thing that happens is the mirror clicks into position. Take about twenty shots and then the shutter sound changes from click-click to click-click---click. The camera is now mis-firing and if I push the shutter button as soon as the prefire position is reached the mirror clicks. If I push the live view button the mirror clicks over, and over, and over until I turn off the power switch.

I'll try the firmware. Really seems like a mechanical problem though.

I am coming to believe that this camera was a Fry's demo that they did not want to repair so they gave it to Goodwill, where I bought it. I knew there were problems, but wanted to give it a try. Just hoping someone else had some experience with this problem and could give a hint.

Since I wrote the first message I have defined the problem some more. Even with the AA batteries I am getting trouble with 'misfires' where the mirror folds but no image is saved. This is worse if I am using the flash, live view and when the batteries are not freshly charged. Firmware is still 1.0. I have not restored the factory defaults, but went through them carefully and did not find anything that looked wrong.

BTW this camera was bought used with about 1400 exposures. I don't know if the 'misfires' counted. I don't expect the warranty would be valid because I didn't get it from a dealer.

I have a K-r that was cycling the mirror at the wrong times. Almost any control would cause the mirror to cycle, though no photo was being saved. Sometimes it would runaway and only turning the camera off would make it stop. Move the E-dial, click! Any button or switch would start the clicking. Even half depressing the shutter button to the focus position would start the mirror clicking.

Finally I changed the battery and it began to function properly. I went from the Lithium-ion battery to AA Ni metal Hydrides and even after I charged the Li-Ion battery the camera would start to malfunction after only a few minutes.

Anyone know anything about this?

DCU4 has stopped working on my desktop machine running Windows XP. It was working Thursday but then crashed when I attempted to start it later in the day. At startup the loading screen comes up but then the fail window pops up. I tried reloading the program, but the results were the same.

I suspect updates I installed that day broke DCU4. Anyone have other ideas?

I shoot auto racing, usually under artificial light. The best camera I ever had for this purpose, as far as features was the Olympus E-100rs. The flexibility of the rate of exposure, the precapture function which allowed me to watch and then trigger the shutter just after the event I was looking for and the IMAGE STABILIZATION (not anti-shake) which allowed me to take panning shots at as slow as 1/80 of a second made this a great camera. It was, sadly only 1.5 M-pixels and Olympus never attempted to build an updated version.

So I started my hunt for a replacement and ended up with the Pentax K-5, which I am reasonably pleased with. Great low light performance and IQ. I wish it had a true Image Stabilization system and a precapture for burst mode. I have had two recent incidents where the camera locked up and I had to pull out the battery to get it to 'reboot'.

50MM Rear Element Seperation

I recently bought a SMC A-50MM f/1.5 lens as a part of a collection of equipment. After I got it I realized that the lens was hazy inside. I took the rear element out and found that only one lens was hazy, the front lens of the rear cluster. It would not clean up. I don't see separation lines. It looks like cataracts inside the lens.

Am I right in assuming this is 'separation' and that nothing can be done.
