I got my second replacement of the lens and the image still jumps/shifts when focusing manually. I don't notice much of a difference in the amount of shift when compared to the original copy. The manual focus ring might be a little tighter ... but that might just be because it is brand new and my original copy has now been used several times. I will probably end up keeping the original.

Did you end up getting a replacement and if so was it better?
I was having the same issue and got a replacement from Amazon but it also had the issue. I may request one more replacement...

I am also seeing this problem. I was testing out a Pentax HD 16-85mm vs a Pentax 20-40mm LTD for manual focusing in live view. I noticed that as you rotated the focus ring the image on the live view screen slightly shifted over when focusing the 16-85mm, but not when focusing the 20-40mm.
Now it seems that people have sent it back and gotten a copy that isn't doing this, but others sent it in for repairs and got a message that there were no defects. So confusing!
Is it worth sending back and trying to get one that isn't performing like this? This copy is sharp too, so I would hate to lose that.

Thanks for all of the advice. I got both lenses and did some in field testing. The 16-85mm looks like the winner and seems to be at least as good as if not better than the 20-40mm in my usage tests (which weren't super scienitific but I just used both on and off tripods in my normal shooting conditions). I do prefer the build quality and focus ring of the 20-40mm, but the 16-85mm just makes more sense due to the focal range and my intended use for landscapes in potentially wet or dusty/sandy places.

Hi,
I was testing out a Pentax HD 16-85mm vs a Pentax 20-40mm LTD for manual focusing in live view. I noticed that as you rotated the focus ring the image on the live view screen slightly shifted over when focusing the 16-85mm, but not when focusing the 20-40mm. I am not talking about the shift from in focus to out of focus, but more a lateral shift of what is viewable in the frame (like more of a tree slightly moving into the frame). I vaguely recall this happpening with another lens (maybe the 18-135mm?). Has anyone experienced this? Is it from the construction of these lenses, or could there be a defect? Is this something more common in zooms with more expansive ranges?

Hi,
I am trying to build up my landscape kit and am looking to replace the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 with something else because (1) it is not great for manual focusing (2) it is not WR. The kit will be the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6, the Pentax 50-135 f/2.8 and either the Limited 20-40mm or the new DA 16-85mm. I was wondering how they compare within the 20-40mm range, especially with edge to edge sharpness? While I don't need the extra range of the 16-85mm because I have it mostly covered, I could see it being useful because I wouldn't have to change lenses as much (if it performs well at both ends of the range). However, I am attracted to the size of the 20-40mm. I am also interested in any opinions on which is better for manual focusing, as I tend to shoot landscapes on live view with manual focus. That being said, I still want the lens to have autofocus so that I can apply it for other types of photography. I will be shooting on a K3. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

This is where I figured the flash having this capability was an advantage, at least in regards to the zoom head. If it knows what zoom and power it is set to and you tell it what ISO and f/ you are using, it should be relatively accurate regarding distance (obv. without modifiers). The app I have (Flash Assistant) asks you to enter guide number and then ISO, Aperture and flash power and it gives you the distance. But as I understand it, GN's change with ISO and zoom, so I am not sure how that is accounted for. I guess you just have to enter the GN at each flash zoom and ISO?

Thank you for the replies. Let me clarify one more time as I think an example would be helpful.
Using one off camera flash (with Pocket Wizard radio triggers) in manual flash mode I know I want to shoot my model with camera at ISO 200, f/4, 1/125. I now walk over to my flash to decide how far away from the model the light needs to be. In the book I read it said that you could set the Nikon flash to ISO200 and f/4 and at power 1/1 it would give you a suggested flash distance. You could then adjust the power down which would change that suggested distance. This seems very intuitive. However, with the Metz flash I have, when you create the same scenario you cannot input aperture value into the flash (or ISO value) so all you can do is adjust power. I understand that the power and distance are all that are really changing in both scenarios, but having the aperture and ISO info on the flash seems to make off camera flash way easier to work with then either having to use a separate light meter or using some sort of external app/calculator/chart to do the math.
So my question is are there any Pentax flashes that have a similar user-friendly feature?
I have looked in some flash manuals but I don't see a similar feature described. I do see that you can put aperture in when using "auto mode" but I believe that is a different mode. I don't even believe my flash displays an aperture or ISO value that is suggested when used off camera via radio triggers.

sbc thanks for your response. I am talking about manual mode where you would set the power on the flash and it would display a change in the distance scale. But it seems (at least for some camera/lens combos) you can actually choose the lens aperture on the Nikon flash to match what is on your camera in addition to choosing the power. I do not see that my flash has this ability.

Hi, I'm just wondering if there are flashes for the Pentax system that allow you to dial in the aperture, especially when using the flash off camera? I have a Metz 50 AF and you can't do it on that one. I was reading "Understanding Flash Photography" by Peterson and he uses the Nikon system which seems to allow this. It seems a lot more user friendly (which I know the Pentax system is not!). Thanks.
