Item Description
After much pondering I have decided to sell my 60-250 on concluding it isn't exactly what I need. It has seen some field use so it shows some marks and scratchings mainly on and around the tripod mount screw and near the front end of the barrel as seen on attached photogs but nothing beyond what I would call surface marks and no dents except a slight bulge in one corner of the golden DA* nameplate so it's more between good and fair in condition. It was never used with the lens hood which stayed in the vitrine for all its time so that part is in a peculiarly pristine condition. Glass, optics and functionality including SDM functionality all top and it has never had technical problems of any kind.

Pentax smartly (at last for some) explored the fact that there seemed to be almost a consensus of late among Japanese manufacturers that large means professional, whatever one understands by that. For me it meant that direct on-body controls for what are and have been (to me) standard photographic functions since the film era were only available on largeish bodies, and obviously more than 1 people were unhappy with that.
Thanks for clearing your position anyway. I don't mind large bodies in the range as far as I have a choice, and there was none.

Hi Pentax again :cool:
So, a slew of thoughts now on the K7 prior to which you CLEARLY read my older rant here in this very same thread. I shall split them into factual comments and some generic thoughts. Ready to begin?
- It is way too easy to inadvertently switch on Liveview when changing with the thumb between AF modes, the respective switches are somewhat too close/not ideally positioned relative to each other. Others have pointed this out as well as I’ve learned.
- The only ergonomical idiocy from Pentax I’ve ever come across: the top LCD panel illumination. Up to now (pre-K7, i.e., MZ-S, K10/20), it was switchable on via a button just as one would expect it to work though I always wondered why you cannot turn it off YOURSELF just as well and have to leave it to it automatically. Logically I would expect it to remain switchable on when I need it and perhaps become actively switchable off as well. But now...no. Neither of the two botched options in the K7 suits me: now I have either to switch off illumination completely so as not to bother me when I don’t want it, thus rendering it effectively non-existent, or having to bear with the idiotic way it turns on every single time when metering (i.e., making a shot and perhaps wanting to look inobtrusive)/changing ISO/exp compensation. I would strongly welcome a third option (and a one certainly easily implementable via firmware update) of assigning a dedicated/selectable button just so that illumination can be turned on (press 1) and off (press 2) on demand, and only on demand (or more precisely in the latter case, turn itself off when not done so actively after some time as in earlier bodies). Shouldn’t be too difficult.
- I would like to see more ergonomic/elegant arrangement of rear buttons, and the buttons themselves more refined in finish/the tactile sense, something to the end of Olympuses E-P1/2 or Leica Ms/X1. Which also tell you that simpler and cleaner is more elegant..
- The top panel (seems directly transplanted from the K10/20) is somewhat disproportionally large for the more compact body, not least making it appear bigger than it actually is (the K20 with its hunched, subdued mafiozo-style blobbiness in comparison somehow managed on the whole to LOOK smaller than it actually was). Also by making the top panel a bit smaller (NOT removing it completely) perhaps some space could be saved for a more ergonomic (see points above) and cleaner arrangement body design-wise of the back controls.
- The same goes for the rear control wheel, it protrudes somewhat more than it should, coming too easily into the thumb’s way, and also distorts the otherwise clean body lines. Perhaps embedding it a notch or two deeper into the body would help.
- Better low ISO sensor/performance is self-explanatory and has been called for ad nauseum, so just for completeness’ sake (I won't go into FF fantasies in the K7 body, at least for now).
Finally some general thoughts, or rather my generic consumer rant on Pentax body designs and how they relate to in-house lens designs, and where I would like to see a more consistent effort and clear long-term positioning.
Let me begin with the MZ-S – though it had its design flaws, and didn’t look equally good from ALL angles, from MOST of them it managed to look strikingly good. The sleek body lines somehow redefined elegance in SLRs (remember how long Photozone used it as a visual hook to its camera review section?) not least by building subtly around the viewfinder hunch and rear control wheels, making it appear on the whole a smooth, understated, inobtrusive urban-looking camera with rangefinder-ish accents. The moderate weight right at the limit of what one could still call “eminently portable” also helped.
Now, I would like to see even more resonance of that elegant, subdued style in Pentax’s DSLRs. The K7 somehow screams to me in an almost Nikonian affirmative: I’m big in the DSLR business, although in a compact sort of way. Perhaps it has to do to with the pronounced viewfinder hump (the meaning of which I do not get as it is mostly made of just the flash holder which does little more than taking up space), perhaps with some oversized elements relative to the body size (see above). I’m also firmly convinced the bodies could go even more compact - what is it particularly about the girth of all digital bodies as compared to film SLRs? – it makes all DSLRs look fat and bulky even with smaller front dimensions compared to their film counterparts. And lighter - the K7 is a step in the right direction here but only in the evolutionary as opposed to revolutionary sense from the K10/20 (remember that average weight of the lighter film bodies was little more than of today's m4/3 compacts? - I would welcome as close down to 500g (420?- the weight of MZ-3) as possible). And I would like to see some more elegance in some details (most of them outlined above) to make it on the whole appear less of an SUV in city settings and more of a “I’m right at home here“ style of camera with a touch of urban elegance (again, the MZ-S body lines!). Or in other words: I would not hesitate to bring the MZ-S with a limited attached to a restaurant or theater, with the K-7 I would. By making a statement with your unique selling proposition (the Limiteds), I would like to see the same kind of steady sense of direction and elegant understatement in your bodies. I would like to see more of the Japanese Leica thing (and I’m not the first user to come up with this), with autofocus and DLSR versatility. End of message.
And, oh, I like VERY MUCH how the camera looks directly en face – the front side contours and depressions are just soo sexy.

The only case where I see a tie (sort of) is the second image - the 31 is clearly focused on the horizontal rear plank whereas the summilux on the front pillar/pillar top. I like the Leica's colours better though.

Small add-on: I don't refer to bokeh differences (though I'm aware it's difficult to factor them out in a subjective comparison), just sharpness and contrast.

Strange thing, he finds the 77 better even wide open than 31 (more specifically, he tests the 31 ONLY wide open).
I always thought the 31 is supposed to be optically perfect?! Any thoughts about the differences to Summilux, owners? (come on, we all know it's just a product as well with a German price factor) - my suspicion would go to (default) in-camera sharpening levels. All just guessing of course, he doesn't mention any settings, even whether he shot jpegs or raws.
I just find the visible differences quite striking. Thinking about Leica, just based on this article and his site.

If you must...but
- the relevant references for me would be the Canon 70-200/F4 and accordingly a similar F4 by Nikon (my knowledge doesn't extend that far) which you both conveniently left out (I leave it to you to search for the figures), and
- the actual weight w hood is closer to 1200g (again without delving into statistics) and still some 1100g without
- filter size doesn't say it necessarily all about actual barrel width nor that the front element extends when focusing closer to the 250mm side, and
just my humble opinion based on actual visual and tactile experience aka ownership. It's just too huge.

Consider carefully whether you need the longer reach of 60-250 (e.g. for long-distance shots, or whatever shooting style/uses you have in mind).
Otherwise all is in favour of the 50-135 (faster, lighter - though not that light by itself I hear -, better handholdable). I nicknamed my 60-250 lovingly "Jumbo" (seriously, it's ridiculously huge&heavy, and the absurd barrel diameter (considering it's an APS-C F4) adds insult to injury), dumped it in the drawer indefinitely and bought the 50-200WR for travel instead - comparable in size and weight to my old hiking zoom (FA 28-70/4).
And as you see, there are other alternatives also. And, not least, primes - I'm starting to find the DA200 inexplicably alluring...

Change of concept? Like a digital MZ-S? Like moving in the right direction when everything except dslrs has been miniaturising? Mmmmmm feels so good...looks so good...this is no less than gorgeous
If it stands in my closet or living room... make it big, chunky & heavy down to ridiculous (especially those class A amps) I don't mind providing it delivers.
If I have to lug it like all day outside...make it as small as possible providing it keeps the functionality I need.

Yep, the perils of translation and what is in the eye of the beholder. They don't use that specific (or "dry") wording as one would otherwise expect in a press statement (also for instance "Neuheiten" doesn't quite translate in my eyes as "the new products"). It's interesting stylistically. Elusive. My 2c.

Coming from the film era just a year ago (still owning a pair of MZ-series bodies), I always valued how small and light the Pentax film bodies were - which was also one of the primary reasons why I went Pentax back then (I never liked brick-style cameras obviosuly cherished by some).
When going digital via the K10d, among my first impressions when unpacking the thing was that it is fairly large and quite heavy - and although a year into using it I am perfectly happy with its function & control setup, I never got quite used to the idea that it really may be just slightly beyond the margin of too big and too heavy for me - sorry.
Last week I bought the 200d as a second body (a little out of despair), and though I like its form and size, I was generally unimpressed by some of its details - mainly controlwise.
So Pentax please - stick with your own tradition and make us a small quality body, one that combines the style of controls of the K*0 series AND the form/size factor of the K200 (or MZ-S, or *ist D for that matter) - more specifically:
K200+
+ definitely pentaprism (the whole idea of pentamirror in (d)slrs is really a shame)
+ larger buffer & faster processor (I couldnīt believe by how much faster EVERYTHING went in my K10d compared to K200)
+ cmos sensor with usable ISO3200(6400?) (anything between 12 to 14 mpix will do)
+ backlit display when shooting in those high ISO/low light conditions
Direct on body dials/switches (as opposed to in-menu options) for:
+ exposure mode selection (just like in the K10/20, or as last seen on the *stD)
+ bracketing selection (just like in the K10/20)
+ iso selection (just like in the K10/20 will do)
+ perhaps af point selection (just like in the K10/20 will do)
+ af-c/s mode selection (K10/20 or as last seen on the *stD)
- perhaps doing away with K200's scenic modes?
= still remaining roughly the size and weight of the K200d (or *st D) = my ideal camera and my shortlist of wishes for the next generation of the K*00 series - Then you can do to the K*0 series whatever you want, and perhaps leave the downgraded specs to the new rumored entry-level K*000 body.
Should this little dream become reality next year, count me in for yet another Pentax digital body, and sooner than later at that...
