I use SmugMug, decent gallery set-up reasonable yearly pro fees. Been using them in the Pro tier for 3 years now. Only thing I don't care for is the slowness of their servers, sometimes I have upwards of 3000 MX photos to upload and it takes all week to get them in place...

I have to agree with you there. I have been doing local motocross for the past few years. The promotors get their photos for free (for the priviledge of being on the track) and the sales come from the riders and their families. Been published in one national motorcycle racing magazine for 2 years now. It is getting easier to get into the pro races as a result.

Smoke will not cause the photos to darken, the smoke "should" have a blue cast to it, unless it was the lingering smoke from fireworks. Otherwise it is exhaust from the bikes and will linger just above the floor up to the lights if there isnt enough circulation. How close to the action were you? within the first few rows, a good flash set at high speed sync will help, otherwise setting the iso to 400 or 800 and shutter no less that 180 will work. I got decent photos in a smaller, marginally lit arena even when the flash didn't fire.
The photo below was taken from the first row of seats using a flash, if you can still view the EXIF data to see the settings, it was a 1/125 at F4. Lens was at 24mm on the DA 18-55 kit lens. ISO was at 400.

That is a good possibility, I never thought of that. I did not encounter that problem at an indoor race at all. The only under exposures came when the flash did not fire (quick shooting without enough time for the flash to regenerate). I will have to pay more attention to that next time out, unfortunately, I will have to wait until April for that.

I have the same problem when I do motocross racing. Same framed area, same lighting, same metering, but one out of every 4 or 5 come out anywhere from 2-5 stops underexposed, never over. sometimes its 2 or 3 photos in a row, then the next few are fine. Usually during these sequences, my eye isnt even leaving the viewfinder.
However, I rarely run across this issue when I am walking around taking the occasional photo.

I have never used a C or N camera, however, I use K10D primarily for motocross race photos. If the AF was as slow as some may believe, I would not be getting any good shots. I can feel and see the camera focus as I am following a rider thru a shot sequence. I guess if its so slow, how good will my photos turn out if its a faster AF

How can a photo of a winged rat on a park bench be considered art, or for that matter, unique. What be unique would be that pigeon making his own art for you.
It must have taken all of your stealth and prowess to sneek up on that elusive and rare winged wonder.;)
Art has everything to do with being open minded, and just about every open minded artist became successful and just about every self proclaimed artist faded into the population without as much as a whimper. I would just LOVE to see you expressing yourself this way at a gallery opening........:hmm:

Well 2 years of photographic training at R.I.T back in the 70s (gee, no digital photography back then) 4 gallery displays in the early 80's, several citations and awards from local photographic organizations in the 80's (no digital then either) Recognized in Black and White, Transparency and color print film (mostly wildlife photography) again in the 80's, only in the last 3 years did I venture into digital photography, mostly because I already had photoshop and wanted to play around with it.
So when is your first gallery opening? Where are the buyers of your ART?
I assume pictorico has some ethnic background or is in some way associated with myspace, which may be a good place to SELL your ART???
and I do not make my own prints, so there is no need for me to purchase any kind of paper, all my print work is done in a lab so i can spend more time and money traveling to create my images and income

Well I guess I will go on and make my sales of my photographic digital work and leave this brainwashed,closed minded, wet behind the ears, young Artist stud, that was taught his art by a crusty, old school, black and white photography professor who found digital photography too complicated for him and chose to badmouth it for semisters on end, frightening his entire class roster into turning their backs on technology.:mad:
Or is it the fact that you invested in thousands of dollars of old photographic equipment you cannot move at reasonable prices, because of digital cameras

Exactly, which doesn't make it ART to YOU, but to the thousands of people who purchased his work, IT IS ART, and that makes him a photographer and an artist.
I, on the other hand, love taking photos. I have 25,000 photos posted on my smugmug, none of them is a work of art to me, I just look for the photo and record the image. Capturing 300-400 individual motocross racers in a day of racing is a different kind of challenge and requires a different set of skills. I also have recorded images of the most photographed natural wonder of the world, Niagara Falls, I like them, never thought of any as art as I use them for illustration purposes. However, someone just today thought of one of them as art and made a purchase of one...in a 16 x 20 size. That still doesnt make me think I am an artist, I am a photographer displaying images made with my chosen medium.
Whether its art or JUST digital images, I recorded 364 sales last month, of ordinary motocross racing, plus some landscapes. I like that, cuz thats what I do, I like birds, flowers, clouds, a million sunsets.
On the otherhand, I do not care for "urban" photography, ghetto photography, marbles, baskets and park benches, they have been done a million times also. Everyone has different tastes.
You had a couple of pictures that caught my eye, however since I cannot be openminded in my critique, I will not give you an individual or overall opinion of your work because of this thread.
I respect the photographers here as they all have a unique vision and choice of medium and they all respect each others choices and styles.

You seem to be trying to make yourself better than everyone here. Kind of like a watercoler artist saying he is better than a visionary using oils. From the looks of your gallery, you chose B & W medium to create art. It is best to compare yourself side by side with other B & W photograph artists. A quick google search found these STUNNING black and white film prints; Tim O"Connor Photography
When you can display images as posted on this randomly selected photo artist, please feel free to make your case again
As for theft, all an artist has to do is regularly copyright their material, then you can go after anyone stealing your images

and a darkroom print also is not art in itself. It has to be seem as Art by the viewer, not the creator. The creator of a darkroom art print only hopes that it will be viewed by others as art, otherwise it is just as worthless as any digital print.

So transparencies are not art either unless they are made into a print in a DARKROOM.
And not one of my prints ever to come out of one those developing machines in Walgreens is not art either, whether composed and exposed to perfection or not.
I read sometime ago, an "artist" I believe in NY City threw feces at something and wanted it to be displayed as art, is it art only if it comes out differently each time?
I had some really good "art" prints I made long ago that I have since scanned and digitized, I am guessing by the definitions here, it is no longer art. Not one of my thousands of transparencies is art, because they are not in print form.
All this art-nonart stuff is giving me a headache.....
Art is in the eye of the beholder, not the creator as all art is not art to everyone...

1) The dirt being tack sharp actually shows us that you did NOT pan on the racer.
2) Look in your custom menu. As Will said earlier, it's the AF by press halfway option.
Couple of notes... if you're finding the flash parts of your photos over-exposing. Turning your flash exposure compensation down a bit. Since you can't really have the flash off camera in those situations, that's probably to best way to avoid the harsh flash look.
Lastly, why not use 2nd curtain sync? A panned 2nd curtain sync can freeze action very well and it'll freeze the frame at the last possible moment giving you a blurred trail behind (not before) your racer.[/QUOTE]

You are correct, after looking again, the rider was coming toward me...I had so many bad photos last weekend.
I know about the blurred trail behind, I did not know it could be effective in sunlight.
I have to get accustomed to the camera, flash and lens I think. I was out again this weekend and the photos came out much better, although I had bright blue skies all day and with the sun's angle this time of year I did not need to flash fill the shadowed areas of the riders. I also noticed that the Sigma lens reacts differently on the K10D and the *IST dl. It focuses and locks a lot quicker on the IST

I always pan on the racers, I used this photo as an example, notice the dirt around the closer rider, all tack sharp, I understand now what the flash is doing. I am using AF-C. How do you disbale the shutter button and only us the AF button?

I have tried high speed sync, no luck
"My guess is that your main problem is that the sync speed for the flash (1/180th sec) is simply too slow for the speed of the subject. "
I didnt know that, that explains the "good" shots I got when the angle was right or the bikes were moving more slowly.
I used every setting on the flash except the 2nd curtian sync...
Apeture was set anywhere between 2.8 and 6.7

I have the AF540FGZ on my K10D. I shot motocross last weekend and obtained horrible results. I cannot seem to figure out how to set the flash for fill (To kill the dark shadows on the motocross riders). It is difficult enough to keep in focus without worrying about the flash.
Most the photos I did get with the flash came out looking like they were almost double exposed. (quickly moving objects) Kind of like the ambient exposure topped off with the flash exposure. (slightly overlapping) They were all partly cloudy to sunny daylight photos.
Also, is there a way to lock the auto focus for a single shot without going into manual focus? With my IST, I could pre-focus holding the button half down and it would lock the focus, with the K10D, I tried to do the same and as soon at the camera is moved, it seeks again, in my case locking on the background as I wait for the next motorcycle to come flying by. I had dozens of shots where the background was sharp as a tack and the subject was an out of focus blur, even when panning.
