Metz 44 and K-r sync speed

Ok... Thanks for the replies... awesome!!

I tried playing with the other settings as you have suggested shutter priority and M, and with the forum replies am now better understanding how this is working! I took some shots on Tv and the flash adjusts the exposure to the right amount, in TTL.

This is good, I just need to get used to it... as I said, my first time using TTL :) I think I'll use more the 'M' and Tv modes rather than 'P' when using the flash, that seems to give me what I am after.

I was worried about equipment issues, but seems its just a user-error!

Thanks for all the replies!!

Metz 44 and K-r sync speed

Hi hope I can get some enlightenment, as to what if anything I am doing wrong.

I am only new into DLSR, long since packing my film SLR away, I decided to get back into it and bought a K-r to start me off again. I have also recently added a Metz 44. The problem I am having is slow shutter speed for normal flash sync. The K-r seems to meter the ambient light, then takes the photo, firing the flash. So I get photos with slow shutter speeds, 1/30, 1/20, 1/8.... It's a problem if the subject is moving even a little. I thought the flash would sync at 1/180, and control the flash output? I'll confess I have never used a P-TTL, but was expecting behavior similar to my old SLR and flashgun.

How do I get a higher shutter speed without full manual settings. If I put it on the sports photo mode the shutter increases to 1/180 , but just taking some pics at a party shouldnt require setting to sports mode... surely the 'P' setting should work?

I am using the camera in 'P', Flash is in TTL mode (button on the back), the flash camera setting is in 'Manual'...

Thanks for any help... I'd really like to hear from anyone with the same (K-r/Metz 44) combination to understand if theirs is the same :)

Thx
Rob

Thanks folks... yep I think I've got it now...

Your right luftfluss the FL is the only variable so effects the FOV on my camera and is all I should worry about. The confusing bit is when I looked at the manufacturer specs, and saw the same FOV's reported... but of course for the Pentax that is for an APS-C and the Sigma for a FF, hence as PePe says at the long end of the Sigma on my camera its actually a narrower FOV than is shown the specs... got it!

Means, they are NOT equal and I need to decide if I want the extra pulling power of Sigma... thx :)

Ok hope someone can help me with become a bit smarter here. At the moment I want to upgrade from my kit lens, and buy a fast zoom for sports picks of the kids.

So I look around and decide I need something in the 70-200mm range, I am looking at the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO EX DG... now when I look at the pentax range I dont see anything similar, but if I look at the FOV spec it seems the D* 50-135mm f2.8 has about the same FOV ,give or take, as the Sigma... Am I right to believe that in terms of telephoto 'power' these lenses on my K-r are much the same as there FOV is much the same, ie I can 'zoom in' just as close (all else being equal) with either lens?

Now I'm only new to all this so be gentle if I have this all wrong... but is that right??

Zoom vs Prime

This has been a great discussion. I have started back taking photos after 20yrs and getting used to the DSLR. I've just bought entry level gear to get started a k-r kit and a Sigma 70-300 DG f4-5.6.

I am taking pics of the kids in sports (netball and swimming), having some fun but havent got the results I want with the sigma, I've got some great shots but the f4 isnt wide enough for good bokeh, and the sharpness isnt always there... I was thinking of getting the Pentax 200mm f2.8, but have discovered these constant aperture zooms like the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8. From what I have read above and because many of my shots will be wide open, I'd expect the prime to give better IQ right?

If I go the prime and lock into a fixed 200mm its going to be a new world for me and take a bit of getting used to, but it is a lighter and smaller lens and has great reviews.
