I had purchased mylar filters for my telescope and telephoto lens - difficult to attach (they were barely big enough and the elastic bands kept slipping off the mylar). The sun was so dim behind the clouds that I was never able to see it through the filters or the eclipse glasses. When the sickle finally appeared it was very obscure so I broke all the rules and just took a few hand held shots. So much preparation and in the end it was very spontaneous.

The light/darkness was very strange but the total eclipse was obscured by cloud. We had this brief view afterwards. I suppose it could be mistaken for a crescent moon, but I like to think it has its own drama. Post totality by Steven, on Flickr

I've taken several shots of this view at different times of year. This is the most recent. Misty bay by Steven, on Flickr

Thanks so much Richard for the runner-up position and congrats to XS400 and to Ivan. I think that person was walking away from me! Looking forward to the next challenge.

It's not so bad - often I don't get any worthwhile pics at all. But I do get some exercise, a mental health tonic and see the seasons turning. My first Eastern Phoebe of the year was at the furthest point of the walk and there were Song Sparrows everywhere. My only disappointment is that I got home to see there were five reports of Fox Sparrows in that area and I didn't see one.

Yesterday I walked about 8km with my camera but the best shot was right next to the car in the parking lot. This Mockingbird has staked out its territory and is singing most of the time - one here taken yesterday and one a couple of weeks ago. Thanks RobG - a few of these Teal have been around for a while but yesterday the ice forced this one a bit closer to the shoreline.

Green-winged Teal are nice to see, especially with the sun behind you to catch the iridescence - like the Eurasian Teal I grew up with but with a vertical white stripe on the side and no thin yellow line between the green and chestnut on the head. The Hard B&W setting on the GRIII seemed a bit harsh so I converted the RAW file to jpeg and converted that to B&W in Photoshop Elements. It seems Elements won't let me won't let me have both Topaz and Silver FX as plugins. Pond with snow fence by Steven, on Flickr

Here in Canada I have just had mine done by Sun Camera (in Toronto) for $100 CDN plus tax. I have used them a few times on my DSLRs and GR III and they have provided good service. I understand it takes some effort to access the sensor in this camera - they told me they have to "pull the camera apart". All is working fine now.

If that was taken in the wild I'm very impressed - they must be very shy.

We usually have two or three White-winged Scoters at the park during the winter but most of the time they are too far out to get a good shot. This first-year male isn't in full plumage yet but I think it still qualifies for the alternative name I heard once - the "Darth Vader Duck".
