Thanks, these are both bracketed at 1 stop and tone mapped in Photomatix & Lightroom. It was the only way I could pull the blues out of the clouds. In person they were a really bright aquamarine, it was a surreal storm to see!

I've been on the fence about upgrading my trusy k-x to either a K-3 or a K-5 IIs. This has solidified it. K-3 body at roughly 100 dollars more than Amazon, but with a free battery grip and wifi card?? Sold. Thanks so much for posting this! :)

I'm interested as to why you say to charge more than what they're currently paying. I was planning on undercutting slightly.

Recently I did a favor for a friend and did a promo shoot for her dance company's upcoming show. It turns out that they were overwhelmingly popular, to the point where other dance companies have contacted them asking who took them. According to my friend the number of dance photographers is quite small and the number of good ones is even smaller. I want to try my hand in it, but have absolutely no idea where to start with pricing as I've only charged someone for photos one time, a friend who insisted on paying me for her graduation shots. I've mainly done it as a hobby and never considered monetization, until now .
These weren't studio shots. They were outdoor, portraits of each dancer posing -in costume- and a couple of group shots. It was all done digitally, no prints. I've googled the topic and haven't found many good results. Can anyone help me shed some light on the subject (no pun intended, well.. maybe a little)?

I was thinking that as well. Although I did this one for free (well, for the price of dinner and a handful of beers) I think I'm going to shop around to other dance companies or the dancers themselves to see if they need work done. According to the friend who organized the shoot, the lady who did their last company shoot charged a LOT of money and gave them back really bad shots in return. So far they are all insanely happy with these, so it's worth trying it out!

Thanks for the advice! I should have mentioned in the OP that the show they're doing is Alice in Wonderland, so that's the "story" going on throughout these. The girl in the white dress is Alice. I tried to soften their faces in close-ups, I just think I didn't for any of the ones I posted here (except for #4 possibly) because I wanted them to look intentionally gritty. I will definitely keep what you said about cropped body parts in mind, I totally did not even think about it!

I've never really considered myself a "good" photographer, despite getting some good shots every now and again. However, today I took some shots for a friends dance company and I think some of them are by far some of the best things I've ever taken. To the point where I might start trying to make some money on the side as a photographer. I was wondering what everyone else thoughts are on these. What can I do to improve? Would people pay for shots like these?
I used two lenses, my 18-55 kit lens and an SMC Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR for close-up portraits.

I've accumulated a good handful of lenses over the past year of owning a k-x, but I have to say that after having this D FA Macro 100/2.8 for just 6 days now... I don't think I even want to use the other ones anymore, haha. Does this happen to anyone else? _IGP2300-2 f2.8 @ ISO1250 _IGP2301-2 f2.8 @ ISO1250 _IGP2275 f2.8 @ ISO1250

If I need a quick shot I tend to just use Av mode. If it's too under/over exposed I can just change the compensation quickly and go from there.

Yeah I am in Lightroom 3.4 or whatever the latest version is. I try not to oversaturate, I prefer to play with the contrast and vibrance and desaturate a little except for the colors I want to stand out, which I will play with the levels individually (ie, decrease luminance/increase saturation of blue/aqua for the sky if needed, or desaturate yellows in grass a bit and over saturate the greens a bit). Also, as far as landscapes go, adding a graduated filter / darkening the exposure / increasing the contrast of the sky a bit while leaving the foreground properly exposed and lowering the contrast a little can make a world of difference.
As far as any color casting that's usually the result of a downloaded preset or filter. If you're unhappy with your colors that's actually what I'd recommend, download a few free filter packs and try them out, use them as a base or starting point and alter from there. I relied heavily on filters when I first started out, but now I've been going with a minimalist approach as much as possible unless there's a feeling I am trying to convey :)

Hehe, thanks! I'm not quite sure, some of them are from my SMCK 35/3.5 lens which is ridiculously sharp with really good color rendition just by itself. The other ones are tweaked in lightroom a little until I am satisfied with them. :) Although I've gone back through some of my older pictures and my tastes as far as colors/processing has changed so I wind up editing another copy, I've spent so much time doing this instead of working lately :D

Cool! And yeah essentially, something similar to (albeit not necessarily as complex as) flickr's share button. :)

It's funny, my white k-x gets nothing but comments like, "hey you aren't going to put me in the newspaper are you?" or "wow do you shoot for flagpole (a local events/music tabloid in my town)??"
I get that regardless of what lens I am using, but I've found that the number of statements made is directly proportional to the size of the lens I'm using. My nifty 50 might pull one of those comments per night, but my Tamron 28-300mm gets exponentially more, lol.

Thanks! They were taken with my SMC-K 35mm/3.5. It's hands down the sharpest piece of glass I own, it's crazy the thing takes such great photos as it has a huge crack through the center of it!

Just a suggestion I thought up while replying to a thread regarding a specific lens in the database. It might be pretty cool to have something on each lens page that generates the BBCode to that lens' respective page, something like this: SMC-K 35mm F3.5
While it's not necessary, it would be a convenient feature for those who want to quickly reference a specific lens in a thread. It also doesn't seem overly hard to implement from a coding stand point. Just a thought! :)

I got a couple of nice shots of my parent's boxer last night! _IGP9402 by hiimkardinal, on Flickr Bang bang, you're dead! by hiimkardinal, on Flickr
The two lightning shots were from Wednesday and the last two were from Saturday! I got maybe 6-8 lightning strikes that night, I don't have an IR control so I can't use bulb, so generally I just use a shutter speed around 6-10 seconds (seems to work best for lightning I've found) and I just keep pressing the shutter back to back. I took about 580 pics that night with 6-8 decent shots. It's probably inefficient and there are probably better ways, but at the moment it's working for me, haha.
I did just buy the stuff to make my phone into a remote control though, just waiting to put it together, hopefully that will work out.
