K5ii intervalometer stopping early

This morning I found some 313 shots and a dead battery, so I think had a had a full charge I would have had all 500 shots.

I feel foolish, because that seemed to solve the problem (my intervals were not longer than my shots, so I was "losing" intervals during shots), yet I think I have had to re/learn this every time I attempted star trails; my brain just refuses to retain this info. LOL

Thanks for the help, all.

Maybe that solves your issue also, VoiceOfReason?

Second test (400 images, ISO 800, 1/250) went OK, so I setup the camera outside where it is maybe 74 degrees with little humidity. Went with 500 images, ISO 800, 10 seconds.

Just checked the camera and found it was no longer shooting.
Doing the math, I got ~125 shots out of 500.

Annoying.

...and I should learn to refresh web pages, because I just barely saw your post, amoringello. I think you might have nailed it. I just snuck back outside after setting up 18 second intervals, so we'll see what I have in the morning.

I have this going off with 1/250 exposures in the background right now, and it seems there are some 200 shots left (probably 195 by time I finish this sentence).
It seems maybe the heat thing is the issue. Maybe.

There has been rain the past couple of days, so we've cooled down a lot here. Earlier the clouds broke, so there are even clear skies right now. I just might set this up for a few hundred shots tonight. Maybe I'll get 3/4 of them before the camera quits.

Funny, I just discovered: if you move either dial or press any button during intervalometer shooting, it will give you status of remaining shots.
I'm not trying to use that during 400 15-second shots in the middle of the night though, but that would have been helpful during my 100-shot test last week.

...and after editing this post somewhat, the camera is done now. I have 400 really dark shots of a bunch of nothing going on in this room. Damn. LOL

---------- Post added 07-19-2014 at 06:15 PM ----------

I just realized the ISO was set to 160 (I shot other things between last week and today), so this "test" wasn't as exacting as I would have liked.

Just changed the camera to ISO 800 and set it to shoot another 400 images.
I'll report back later.

thank you FrankC --- didn't even occur to me to try that!

On the other hand, though, i'm almost afraid to try and then find my camera is on the fritz.

I'll give that a shot tomorrow sometime and report back.

Attempting star trail shots, I've set my camera to shoot several hundred photos only to get anywhere from 15 to 67 in recent attempts. Several months ago I did not have this problem, so I assume one of two things is the culprit:

o Firmware updates
o hot/humid Summer is here

Last attempt, I sat and watched the camera. After 15th shot (of 50 or 100, can't remember) the camera gave its "shooting complete" message, no sort of error or anything else.

Settings:
ISO 640
15sec exposure
3sec delay/interval between shots
6MP JPG-only

Has anyone else had this issue?

Does the camera stop if the sensor gets too hot?

Will more info help? Ask away!

Thanks in advance!

I have almost the exact same shot as 31 --- as I imagine 95% of the people with cameras in this town do LOL

Interesting choices this go-round... Voting will take a bit of thought on my part.

I wish I'd been paying attention! I normally don't feel up to par for these contests, but for this theme I have one I'd have loved to enter just to see.

Regardless there are lots of really good entries here. This is going to be a long decision-making process this time... :D

Time exposures with K-10D.

That should be what is called Dark Frame Subtraction happening.

Marc Sabatella says this:

What it does is take a second picture after the one you really took - the second one with the shutter closed (hence a "dark frame"). So you press the shutter button for a 5-second exposure, the camera spend 5 seconds takes a picture, then closes the shutter and spends 5 mores seconds taking a second exposure with the shutter closed. The idea is to see where that second pictures shows noise or hot pixels, which is really easy to do since it *should* be completely black - any pixel readng that isn't 0 is noise. Then the camera compares that pictures to the real one and uses the second as a guide to remove the noise and hot pixels in the first (I think it literally goes pixel by pixel subtracting the value in the second picture form the value in the first).

from this thread

In your Custom Menu there is an option for turning off the NR. That should "fix" your nuisance.

Models after the K10D don't allow this to be turned off for any exposure over 30 seconds, I believe. That is, this is one of the reasons people preferred this model to its successors.

edit:
I grabbed my K10D and took a 30 second exposure. Immediately after I could view the picture.

I use a Nikon Circular Polarizer, 72mm. It's very slim and seems to be very good to me --- but as it's the only CPL I've ever used, I have no basis for comparison. If they made one in 77mm, I would buy it. (I wish I'd bought one in that size back when I got it, actually, but live and learn.)

I saw that you utilized the 200mm shots within minutes of my posting them. The Sears 55mm is there now, and the garbage 28mm will go up later.

I was referring to the dust I didn't think to blow off the lenses before shooting, but thanks for the praise! I wish I'd taken a picture of the printing-paper-on-the-living-room-floor setup I used to shoot those. LOL For anyone wondering, those were all shot with my Sigma 18-50 EX DC.

I posted the other pictures in their respective review threads:

Vivitar 200mm 3.5 preset lens
Vivitar 135mm 2.8

but here are these of this crappy lens

Since there are a seemingly a billion versions of this lens, I wasn't sure if I should make another, more generic "Vivitar 28mm 2.8" review thread, or one specific to the t-mount version.

Please let me know if I should repost those other pictures in this thread specifically.

MattGunn, thank you for your response! Even though I didn't ask the question as clearly as I should, you did your best to help me, and I appreciate that.

ovim, thank you for your response as well, because despite my inability to communicate clearly, you understood what I was asking and gave me the exact answer for which I was looking. LOL

From what I understood from the post I referenced, if the other mount's registration distance is shorter/smaller, one should "shorten" the lens the amount of that difference. I wasn't grasping why, but your explanation with "100mm to front element, adjust to recreate 100mm" made sense to me (though I don't exactly know where 100mm came from, but I'm going along with it).

Over the next...year, I'm going to attempt to modify a Konica-mount Vivitar 75-205mm f/3.8 lens to Pentax-mount, and ideally in such a way that the aperture is adjustable. If I come close to success, I'll post pictures.

Thanks again!

I was looking at this thread elsewhere on this forum because I was considering changing a Konica lens to Pentax mount. However, reading that the original poster made his lens shorter threw me for a loop; I'd have thought it needed to be longer.

(For those not wanting to click the link, Konica registration distance is 40.7mm while Pentax is 45.5mm)

Using the above as an example, can someone please give a brief explanation how lens hackers should be modifying lenses to compensate for the difference in distance from other mounts to Pentax??

I just got my K20D back from C.R.I.S. today, after sending it off not even 2 weeks ago (maybe on the 14th). My AE-L button was broken such that it wouldn't "click" and pressing anywhere near it would cause it to activate (e.g. the standard thumb resting place). Even zooming in on a picture would kick over to "protect/unprotect" after two ticks of the wheel. Honestly I was afraid that some scratches I have on the top of the camera that have been there for months would have made them refuse my warranty request, but no, I got my service. Maybe it was a super-simple procedure, maybe it was common (I read about someone else having a similar issue w/his K20D AE-L), but either way that sort of turnaround was outstanding to me, and completely unexpected based on what the Pentax Imaging website said, and especially based on what I've read here.

Count me in the Satisfied camp.

does anyone have the picture of the pinout for the grip?? referenced in this thread:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/64828-k20d-grip-connector-pinout.html

I have a pin that won't make contact, and if i can determine what it does, I can maybe swap it out for another whose function I wouldn't use (AE-L).

edit: maybe more than one aren't contacting... my grip "works" now, but my dials on it don't. However, AE-L, of course does. LOL

That's really impressive! The noisiest pictures to me just have what looks like film grain in them, and not the red splotches my K10D was so fond of adding, so I don't consider them bad at ALL.

I may have just found my new backup camera...!

The QR plate isn't being "pulled down all the way" when the head is set to "locked." The metal flange to which it attaches recesses 1mm, maybe 2 at most.

I removed the black plate in the center of the flange, and could clearly see that moving the switch is moving the mechanism underneath as it should, so I can only guess that there is dirt or build-up preventing the flange from depressing properly. :(

I don't have a macro, and my attempts to hand-hold my 50mm lens in reverse were not working, so these are the best shots I got. The third shows the grease-looking glue(?) near the switch.

unlocked

locked

???

mickeyobe, your suggestion is probably the best solution. Too bad I can't afford a fix right now.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear before, but the switch is in the Lock position, but again, this is the area on the grip/head where there seems to be dried glue (or grease?) of some sort, which makes me wonder if someone didn't do their own repair to it before it ended up in my possession. I'll try to take a picture tomorrow. I essentially got the head for free with the legs (based on price), but was hoping it would still work out in my favor. Myabe not. :p

Thanks again for all responses!
