...and yet you have no problem asking for me to assume all the risk (via PM) by avoiding PayPal and shipping to you with no signature confirmation? At least I have a marketplace history and have posted more than a handful of times. Sure, I can play your game, but you're sending me cash before I ship my lens to some internet stranger who requests payment with no seller protection and anonymous pick-up.

You should have kept this in PM, bro... Tacky.

I think we can do business. Can you do UPS to arrive sometime next week, no signature, going to Los Angeles area?

Also, preferred method of payment? I can do PayPal, but if there's a way of doing like Google checkout I'd prefer that (somebody spoofed my on a PayPal account once and it makes me wary to trust them).

Thanks"

Nass, out of respect for the forum, I have been silent on the topic ever since I cashed out. Then I read _lyan_'s clearly derogatory response to FoggyDay, "Bad photos come from bad photographer." - it pissed me off. It is like handing Tiger Woods a bent golf club, then telling him he is a bad golf player because he is struggling to make par. I'm sure others can golf just fine with a bent club - you just have to make the most of what you got.

What FoggyDay said is completely valid. His disposable outperformed his K-r. That is an objective statement which can be measured should we be provided samples from both sets. He clearly has a problem, and if so, he deserves to have it validated (since Pentax clearly won't do it). The response he got was fanboy in nature and (as far as I'm concerned) other forum members are almost as guilty to let such a statement stand in the light of such a well documented problem.

Yeah, ok. What I said was overly broad and a bit harsh. We'll all just have to make the most of it. ...and I'll just make the most of being called immature.

What the heck. If there is nobody else around to validate the experiences of the new K-r owners, then it may as well be me.

I completely agree that if someone is perceiving the ff problem with their kit lens or in live view, then something else is wrong.
These owners should be open to feedback and not blame the camera.

I completely disagree that the problem is isolated to a few copies of the K-r. The very fact that some do and some don't is a evidence of a broader issue around QA. I think ff affects a vast majority of K-r, but people will not realize it until they are shooting in light of a certain kelvin with a shallow DoF. Those who never shoot in reddish light will never experience the problem even if the camera may indeed have the problem. Those with slow lenses will never experience the problem although their camera may indeed have the problem. Hell, I'll even go further and say that some people's standards are so low that they don't even know ff when they see it!

Below is one of the best visual representations I could find. The image shows two brackets for f5.6 & f11. f3.5 will be even more slim, but have a relatively deeper DoF than f2.8 or faster. If you are shooting at or faster than f2.8 that bracket will be very slim - almost as slim as the orange bar. Now Imagine you move the diagrammed focus brackets forward, even by the smallest amount. Your subject is still within the focus sweet spot @ f5.6 & f11, but that orange bar which represents the Dof of a fast lens has left the subject and you are now out of focus. This is how we can both have a problem and not have a problem at the exact same time. The lucky ones can adjust the camera enough to compensate.

Any new K-r owners who are unhappy with their purchase are very unlikely to find a sympathetic ear on this forum at this time. The K-r is almost a year old now. Most of us have who were let down by the K-r and/or Pentax have already gotten rid of the camera and moved on. This forum is now a "fanboys only" zone.

I believe it is full manual. Also, in playing with the aperture, I noticed that it is not as "snappy" as it should be. I have seen much worse, but something isn't perfect with this one. I can't see any oil on the blades, even with a flashlight. I guess it really doesn't matter in full manual, but in this situation...

I don't mind sharing the S#, but out of respect for the future owner's potential feelings on the subject, we'll leave it at the first four. 7736XXXX

This is an f4.5, not an f4. I believe this is a Kiron, yes?

The neat thing I liked to do with this lens is zoom and focus at the same time while shooting movies with my K-r. It took some practice, but at least it didn't require three hands. :)

Absolutely true. I work full time and have two children, both under the age of 2. Any time I devote to selling my gear comes at the expense of my family, my job, or my sleep at night. Hence, slow picture posting & slow responses. I'm doing what I can and that's just going to have to be good enough!

As stated earlier, this is absolutely not true. I was just about to post a screenshot to prove him wrong, then I suddenly stopped caring and found something else to do.

No problem. My apologies for wording my concerns with PayPal so poorly in the original post. It appears that dgaies quote was altered when I edited (clarified) my payment statement in the post. For the record, I said something along the lines of my not accepting PayPal as it has become too insecure. I can see how this could have raised some concerns for buyers and for that I apologize.

As a buyer, PayPal is not only convenient, but very secure. I ask that you view PayPal from the perspective of a seller. PayPal has changed their position from one of impartial third-party proxy to fully siding with buyers (probably a reaction to seller exploitation). I have personally had an eBay buyer lie about receiving an item and dispute the payment. Even though I could prove that the buyer actually received the item, PayPal still took their word over mine and I had the money removed from my bank account despite my objections. In researching the situation, I found a website with hundreds of similar stories in their forums: PayPal Alternative - Pay Pal Lawsuits, PayPal Complaints & Fraud If you require more evidence, then I recommend this site which can provide hours of interesting reading.

I have too much invested in camera gear to get scammed a second time, but I will say this: If you have a longstanding Pentax Forums account and a regular posting history here, then I will accept PayPal from you. I would accept PayPal from both posters above.

Last, even if you choose to not buy the camera backpack from me, I highly recommend it.

THIS SALE HAS CONCLUDED. Any unsold items will be relisted at some future date.

Pentax Garage Sale!

DISCLAIMER: My free time is in short supply, so responses to PMs may be slow in coming.

Payment:
I will only accept PayPal payments from PentaxForums members with an established posting history. Everyone else, postal money order (most cost effective) or Western Union ($$$).

Shipping: CONUS only. Depending on what you want to buy, I’ll weigh the gear and estimate your shipping cost. I will also include insurance and delivery confirmation (tracking).

Unfortunately, I don’t have the time (just now) to photograph everything in detail. If you need a photo of a particular item, please send me a PM requesting exactly what you want to see and I’ll add it to this post as soon as possible.

For all lenses below, there is no fungus, haze, or oil on the aperture (unless otherwise noted).

SOLD Pentax AF540fgz (AF 540 AF-540) - $250 Fair condition - due to some scratches on the underside of the flash head. Comes with original box, manual, storage bag, and aftermarket diffuser cap. Works perfectly.

SOLD LowePro Pro Runner 200 AW (Olive Drab Green and Black) - $50 Like New Condition - Never used outside of the house. I did a lot of shopping around to find the "perfect" camera bag for my Pentax gear and after 3 false starts, this is where landed. There is enough room to carry the body, external flash, telephoto lens, and up to three other lenses (depending on their size). It also easily fit my extra batteries, lens filters, remote, etc... This is an absolutely fantastic bag which costs $75 new.

SOLD Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens - $150 Excellent condition. Only used twice. In absolutely spotless, condition with original box, caps, and padded storage bag. Don't confuse this lens with the non-APO version which does not have the red stripe around the lens. The APO designation means Sigma used special low-dispersion (SLD) glass and is designed to minimize color aberration. PHOTOS ARE IN THIS GALLERY

Pentax-DA AL II 18-55mm f3.5 - 5.6 - $75 Excellent condition. Comes with the original box, lens hood, and both caps.

Pentax-DA 40mm f2.8 Limited - $300 Excellent condition. Comes with the lens hood, storage pouch, original box and both caps. This is my favorite Pentax lens and I'm going to hate to see it go. PHOTOS ARE IN THIS GALLERY

Pentax-F 50mm f1.7 - $220 Good Condition. Recently professionally cleaned. No fungus or haze and the aperture blades are snappy and oil-free. Includes front and rear caps. PHOTOS ARE IN THIS GALLERY

Katz-Eye Focusing Screen - $150 Like New Condition - Only on my camera for 2 weeks before I took it off and sold the camera. In flawless condition. Comes with the original box & installation tool. Compatible with the K-r, K-x, K100 series, K110, & K200. Has Opti-Brite coating and rule of thirds gridlines. Originally cost me $205.

Since condition is subjective, I’m listing the following k-mount manual focus lenses at “good to fair” condition. Most of these lenses are 20+ years old and will have normal amounts of dust for their age.

PENDING SALE Pentax-M 50mm f1.4 $95 (Good to Fair condition)

PENDING SALE Pentax-A 50mm f1.7 $65 (Good to Fair condition)

PENDING SALE Pentax-M 135mm f3.5 $50 (Good condition. Integrated lens hood.)

SOLD K-Mart Focal 28mm f2.8 Manual Focus Lens - $30 - Don't be put off by the "K-Mart" brand label. This lens is tack sharp and has 8 aperture blades.

Tele-Astranar 400mm f6.3
$30 (Fair to poor condition - various scuff marks)

Ricoh XR Rikenon 28mm f2.8 Manual Focus Lens - $30 - This lens is also very sharp with great color rendition. There is a typical amount of distortion commonly present in wide-angle lenses. 6 aperture blades.

Albinar 28mm f2.8 Manual Focus Lens - $15 – Externally good condition. Internally, the aperture blades have some oil on them (barely visible on the back side of the blades) and are not very snappy. Has 6 aperture blades.

Vivitar 80-200mm f4.5 Manual Focus Lens - $15 – Good condition except aperture blades are not as "snappy" as they should be. No oil is visible, even using a flashlight.

I can confirm this from first-hand experience. All that all that is required is the sales receipt (invoice). From the invoice they can then reference the vendor and when the clock started on the warranty (date of the sale).

Pentax Kr and AA Batttery Adapter...
Posted By abcdave

For me:

1) I already had quite a collection of AA NiMh batteries. In my case, one adapter meant unlocking at least four sets of backup batteries.
2) I also use the AA batteries in my flash, so I'd rather carry the more versatile AA's than multiple Li-ions.
3) I have multiple devices which are powered by AA batteries. It is a wiser investment for me to buy universal AA batteries than invest in proprietary Li-ions which only work with this one device.

Fundamentally, I agree with you. For someone who is just gearing up and probably is at a low risk of unexpectedly draining their batteries while traveling, it is probably more cost effective to buy additional Li-ions. They are lighter and smaller in the camera bag. There are also few parts to keep track of (1 Li-ion = 5 parts (adapter plus 4 batteries)). The Li-ion is also certainly less of a hassle to replace in the camera than the AAs in the adapter. There is one battery slot that can be a little tricky to remove the battery from.

I really, really like the idea that the K-r is battery agnostic for the most part. Both AA and Li-ion fans are offered a choice vs. being locked into one platform.

Poll: FF issue... did sending in help?

Not to be overly cynical, but "seems to work" is the key phrase. Your DoF with a kit lens isn't as deep as something with a smaller aperture, so the front focus problem is most likely absorbed or hidden (as another forum member put it) by a deeper DoF.

If it works, then it works and why look for trouble? If you ever shoot faster than f3.5 then you may encounter problems in low light. Some say the ff problem is only present on fast lenses. I wonder how many people actually have a systemic front focus issue, but the problem is masked by a deep DoF?

EDIT: My experience in the U.S. was slightly less than three weeks of shop time. The shipping either way added time, so it was slightly less than a month away from home. The good news: They fixed the edial and fixed the battery level indicator. Before it would not run on NiMH AA batteries. Fresh, good cells would report empty and the K-r would power off. Now the AA's work just fine, so they were able to adjust something in the camera!

I sent in 3 lenses, but they did nothing other than test and clean them. With the camera in the shop, you may as well send all your autofocus lenses in for a check-up and free cleaning if it doesn't inflate shipping charges too much due to weight.

It is a little thing, but I wish that people would adopt the convention of using "FF" for Full Frame and "ff" for front focus. Adr1an is correct, context is the best way to determine which is which.

What is Quick Shift Focus System?
Posted By abcdave
Replies: 19
If you have a lens with the quick-shift feature, this is an example of the procedure for fine-focusing or adjusting the results of the camera's auto-focus:

1) Half-press the shutter button to automatically focus.
2) Manually turn the focusing ring to fine-tune the focus.
3) Fully depress the shutter button to snap the photo.

EDIT: The camera body is always set to auto-focus and you may adjust the lens manually at any time you desire.

By contrast, here is the fine focusing procedure if you do not have a lens with the quick-shift feature:

1) Half-press the shutter button to automatically focus.
2) Toggle the switch on the camera body to manual focus.
3) Manually turn the focusing ring to fine-tune the focus.
4) Fully depress the shutter button to snap the photo.
5) Toggle the switch on the camera body to auto-focus so that you are ready for the next photo.

I hope this helps.
