thank you! I ended up staying in the nature reserve after hours and got a bit of an unfortunate parking ticket. The sunset was worth it.

It's photos like these that tempt me to get a lensbaby... much as I worry that it's a lot for a 'toy' lens.

That's a beautiful shot! Really love the warm light on the snow.

Thank you all! The first two shots were long exposures (two minutes for the sunset, a minute for the tree). The shot with the starburst was an incredible stroke of luck. I noticed, while walking in a nature reserve at sunset, that the tip of the radio telescope had cast a long shadow over the path, so I hurried to that point, placed the camera at the edge of light and shadow, and took the shot. Really a matter of fast action rather than patient waiting. The light changed quickly after.

I've not used the FA31, but I have owned the DA 35/2.8 Macro. I found it had excellent image quality; beautiful (slightly dark, lush) rendering, and was very sharp. It focuses very fast _provided_ that the camera's computer doesn't miss focus, but once it misses that focus point it cycles loud and very noisily through the entire focus range. This has (on quite a few occasions) led to me missing indoor candid shots that I'd have loved to capture.
If cost is an issue, one thing to do is consider the FA35/2 (or the Samsung D-Xenogon 35/2, its identical clone). Both can be had used for less than the price of the DA35/2.8, are sharper at equivalent apertures than the DA35/2.8 (see tests on photozone.de), and are almost as fast as the FA31. I switched from the DA35/2.8 to the FA35/2, and couldn't be happier with the swap.
