These sort of magnifications imply fairly significant distances to the subject, at which point atmospheric distortion can start to be a factor, especially over water ... I'm wondering if that's the distortions you're seeing?

On 24Mp aps-c with TC you have 24Mp and 945mm equivalent FF focal length (1,4TCx1,5cropsensor x450mm).
On K-1 in crop mode you have ~16Mp and also 945mm equivalent.
Without crop mode you can probably increase to 20..24Mp without vignetting by manual crop in post, but you stay with 630mm, maybe bit more focal equivalent due to crop... hence less magnification, even when pushed to 24Mp.
One could add ISO sensitivity in the discussion (because of F8 and fast shutter need for wildlife...) but this depends on individual camera’s in the comparison..., I guess a K-3m3 would excel here compared to older generation bodies.
PS: K-3II with 1,4x HD DA and 150-450 gives excellent results, there is only light loss of sharpness and focus remains reliable,
one exception on the rule that TC’s result in general in visible picture quality reduction.... this combo feels like being build to work together.

On K-1 in crop mode you have ~16Mp same focal length.
Without camera crop mode you can probably increase to 20..24Mp without vignetting by manual crop in post, but you stay then with 700mm....800mm equivalent.. hence less magnification, even when pushed to 24Mp.

Yes, c.a.m. explained that previously. But the manual could be clearer. The OVF section doesn't mention the word "tracking" until the third page, and even then doesn't tie it to any specific AF Active Area.

Dear friends,
I made it to LE MANS 24 HOURS !
That was a dream come true, that was THE GOAL when I started shooting and thinking where would I like to end up one day. (even thought I love Formula 1)
This event runs for a week, and I just missed 2-4 days (I went Wednesday and was there until Sunday when the race ends).
By what I've heard it's been an EPIC race,
I came from Barcelona by plane and then rented a car. The previous weekend I was covering the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix 2023 what allowed me to do one more F1 race (at home), let's say a "Last Dance", photographers edition. And Saturday I was sick. Sunday and Monday I even had fever. But painkillers helped me get better. Now I can say i'm recovered 95% but not in Le Mans.
It was my first time there and it's not easy, this is a 13Kms track, and you need to walk quite a lot.
But I won't complaint.
Race Day (24h race) was hectic and I think I just slept 2hs in my car at the parking lot from 2 to 4AM saturday to sunday.
I have used the following gear Pentax K3-III y K3 Silver + Sigma 17-50mm, Pentax 21mm limited, Pentax 35mm DA, Pentax 50-135mm f2.8 y el Pentax 150-450mm :D

Decided I'd better join in, fellow DFA 150-450 users.
I had previously posted about adding an eyebolt for a strap to the tripod foot in the 300mm plus lens club. If anyone (UK) wants help doing this (lacking taps , drill press etc) msg me.
Couple of pics from this summer...

Pentax have sorted the continuous AF gremlins with the K-1 II and K3 III , and I think the KP is also much improved.
My K-1 (version 1) was not the best for AF-C when used with the older style DA lenses like DA* 60-250. Since I started using the K-1 II together with the modern DFA lenses like DFA 70-200 It gives me 9/10 keepers.
So my advice for you is to look at the K3 III paired with a modern (non screwdrive) lens. IMGP0179 by Peter Schluter, on Flickr

I have been using Pentax as astrophotography camera with or without altazimuth mount for years. In the old days, K3II, K-1 with built-in astrotracer are great, but you always feel it is just a backup plan. This summer I used K3III intensively with the new version firmware and astrotracer Type 3. The result is amazing and a game changer. It makes Pentax astrophotography with astrotracer a different world. All the photos are shot with DA200mm and ISO3200,F4,60" near 20 frames and dark, flat, darkflat, bias frames. STC Clip-in filter made in Taiwan is a booster. They work great.

Funny thing is, several people here are complaining about this 'pay for additional software features' policy but nobody has complained about the upgrade not being available to K-3 Mark III. :p

My wife bought the DA *16-50 mm PLM recently. I'm not sure how much she'll let me use it -- she mainly plans to use it for weddings. I will say that it is a really nice lens -- much better build than the original DA *16-50 (which I also own), faster focusing, and has much better performance at f2.8 than the older version.

three stages of wing foiling in one photo
down
Restarting
success Quote: Wing Foiling: A Beginners Guide . . . .
What is winging?
The rider holds a wing that is not too dissimilar from an inflatable kite. Most wings take their shape and rigidity once fully inflated, however, some wings have a physical boom structure to increase stiffness. The rider stands on a board and uses the wing to harness wind energy which in turn, powers them along. Where this sport differs from any other wind-powered water sport is that the wing is handheld and not attached to the rider by a harness nor the board. This makes it an extremely free-flowing sport and is part of the reason so many people love it.
What is wing foiling?
. . . Wing foiling is where the rider uses the same type of handheld wing to power them along but now with the introduction of a hydrofoil. A hydrofoil can be mounted onto a variety of different sized boards. The more beginner boards being larger and higher volume whereas advanced boards will be much smaller and partially sink under the rider's weight.. . . https://www.ikointl.com/blog/wing-foiling-beginners-guide

This morning we had not only one or two Cooper's Hawk, but FIVE, where most were juveniles, and possibly an adult was present in the pack. They were hanging in the backyard trees, looking for a lunch. They were hunting in group around our feeders. Épervier de Cooper / Cooper's Hawk [Accipiter cooperii] |

I have to try the astro tracer some time, been a while, I have the O-GPS but don't often break it out. Took this recently, using a hat + bedrock as a "tripod" (forgot my tripod.) |
