SMC 16-50mm conversion to screw drive autofocus for K5 with Mac

A huge shout out to Duc-Driver for the files I downloaded to fix my thrice broken SDM 16-50mm lens! IT WORKS PERFECTLY NOW WITH THE SCREW DRIVE!!! And thanks to RossCo who posted the "procedure.pdf" file that clearly showed step-by-step how to he fixed his K7's lens. That was very helpful to show exactly what I should be seeing at every point of the procedure. The only thing that was missing for the K5 was that you need to keep scrolling down to find the 4th level menu photo that he shows.

So this is what I ended up doing for my K5 16-50mm conversion with a Mac:
1. Downloaded files from Duc-Driver (thank you –thank you–thank you!!!)
2. Placed files at root level on my SD card. The problem is that Macs automatically add .txt to the files. I removed the txt in the name via the "get info" command but that simply hid the extension so it wouldn't work. You need to change the name in "Name & Extension" to actually rename the file. Once they were properly renamed and copied to the SD card, the icons changed also, from text image to actionable file. (See attached images.)
3. Placed SD card in K5 with door open. Turned on power and the DEBUG menu appeared.
4. DEBUG MENU: Select engaged .
5. Scroll down in order to find LENS ROM DAT CAMERA=>SD
6. Select. Lens profile then is copied to your SD card (LENSEEP.LNS)
7. Turn off power and copy files to your hard drive in case you need to go back to original lens specs.
8. Follow the rest of the directions from RossCo's pdf attached (from post #428 on page 29.)

Thanks to all that helped!!
Best regards,
Sue

The Mac added the .txt. I've removed the extension and reformatted and added files to SD card, loaded into K5 and still nothing. Just black screen. The power on indicator light flashes and the screen stays black.

I formatted the SD disk, then copied your 2 files to the disk without any alterations and powered on. Nothing happens, just black screen. I can tell the power is on. I've turned it off and back on with disk door open and closed. With open, black screen. With closed, normal functions.

Here is a snapshot of the SD disk contents.

Hello Duc-Driver,

I've loaded the 2 files onto the SD card and followed your instructions on inserting into camera w door open and it only has a black screen showing. Do you have any other recommendations on what to do to get this to work? With door closed, the camera operates as normal.

Hello all!

I've got a 16-50mm that was purchased in January 2011 with SDM that failed in July 2011 and July 2012 (both times fixed under warranty) and has just failed again. Was this one of the "early models" that was known to be a problem or am I just lucky?

Just finished reading through all the posts and didn't see a fix for screw drive conversion with a K5 camera and a Mac. (I tried the K7 fix with Mac but that didn't work--placed sd disk in camera with debug folder on it and it didn't do anything.)

Can anyone point me in the correct direction? I only have the K5, a Mac and don't have a PC.

Thanks!
Sue

Hi all, yesterday my k-5 somehow switched into flash mode "flash on" function and I can't get it out of this. I'd like to set it to take high speed photos but the only options that come up when I select the flash button are the flash on options. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

It was a body only. Love the camera but don't want a defective one. Might return this one if the spots get worse and get the silver one--love the retro design! :)

The firmware on the camera is 1.01. Was wondering how to update it to 1.02?

Bought a body only last month (SN#392XXXX) from Amazon with multiple stain spots. Just received a replacement yesterday (SN#396XXXX) with 2 spots and have yet to heat it up. The first one's stains did get a bit darker after using live view for about 20 minutes.

How do you update to 1.02?
