Nope that's just the widest it will go at a given length. Try this - put it into Av mode (aperture priority). Then dial it down to the lowest f stop. It will be 3.5. Then zoom it out to 55mm. Now the widest you can get is 5.6.
You can put it at f/22 safely, until the aperture is a tiny pinhole. When you do that, notice how the exposure time changes. I would recommend going to the library and getting any basic book on photography. Even a film era book will work, the concept is exactly the same.

This seems easy to me - send it in for repair. You have several nice backup cameras, maybe after using them for a while you'll find you don't miss the K-5. Or, once it comes back perfect and working correctly you'll wonder how you got along without it. I can't speak for your wife's feelings but, my wife would not be offended in the least. But she would be if I let it sit broken and unused.

Are you kidding? For the money I love these lenses. I have the 18-55 and 50-200 WR's. I like the 50-200 so much I sold my DA 55-300. For what I use them for I would have paid a lot more. I use them on the mountain skiing, mountain biking, hiking and taking my kids to the park or rainy soccer games. They're not for "serious" photography but they are seriously fun outdoors.
The pair together was about 300 bucks. Is there any manufacturer who offers quality kit weather sealed lenses at such a low price?
