K-5 Integral Flash Non-Functional

Hi
My 5 yr old K5 flash has just gone the same way.. Some googling leads me to think that a fuse in the flash circuitry has blown..
Some body reported that it was repaired within half an hour!
If you do open yours up to look inside, please report back if you fix it, I might then be brave enough to do the same.

RAW work flow

Hi
I'm trying to stick to raw only now, and have been looking around the web for ideas on workflow.
Some people say to do noise reduction first, some say do it last. Now I'm using PS Elements 9 with ACR 6 ish

When I open a raw image in pse, acr opens with that image shown. Am I right in saying that what I see is the original raw image with the preset adjustments applied to it? If so how is there any workflow involved?
Should I leave the sliders all set to 0, then adjust noise, then other parameters as needed for each image individually?

If I were to use a standalone noise reducing software, they don't work on raw files, so I would need to convert to tiff then reduce noise then open in acr to adjust other parameters - seems a bit long winded. Is there a better way?

Help appreciated guys.

How to get Pentax colours in ACR

I now realise that the K5 shows a jpeg on its screen after a photo is taken even if set to shoot in raw, or at least I think it does.
Also windows 7 live photo gallery with the fastpicture viewer codec for raw image also seems to show the embedded jpeg. I thought it was showing me the actual raw image.
I had the K5 set to portrait with added saturation and set to shoot raw, so initially I was very surprised how different the 'jpeg from raw via acr' looked compared to the in camera jpeg and what I thought was the raw image viewed on live photo gallery - now I know why. :)
The learning curve continues.

Does the Fast Picture Viewer show you the raw image with the embedded jpeg info applied?

Thanks for your input guys.
I've spent a few hours on the web getting to grips with raw files and how different converters show images using different algorithims etc.
I now have a better understanding .I will try out a few different programs and then set up a default setting on the chosen program to get jpegs the way I like them, and the start further manipulations as needed on individual files.

How to get Pentax colours in ACR

I was not doing anything to the images. Just open in software, convert to jpeg then save
All the jpegs look duller/less vibrant than the original raw unless the jpeg came from the camera.
I wonder why the acr default setting for Pentax K5 don't do the same as the camera setting do, then I would not have to make adjustments to get 'Pentax' look.
Does that make sense?

Hi

Started to shoot in raw only and convert to jpeg using ACR and aso tried Raw Therapee.
Neither give the vibrant colours that are present in the raw image (viewed on windows 7 with fastpictureviewer raw plug in), and the in camera jpeg conversion looks better than both.
I understand the Pentax softaware would probably be the best to use, but I didn't find it easy to use and it was slow to use.

So, anybody found settings for ACR that would keep the Pentax 'colours and feel' ?

Thanks

Can I join in?
Purchased a M50mm F4 macro used today.
First attempt at the beach with stop down metering - seems to overexpose a bit.

Has anyone tried repeated catch in focus using interval timing, would it work or is a lockable shutter release cable needed??

K5 and af360

Been messing about with the K5 and af360 today.
It seems to work quite well on the hot shoe in p-ttl mode in various exposure modes on the camera.
In wireless mode - different story. When in p-ttl mode it seems to under expose a lot depending on the scenes' reflectivity and brightness. Change to A mode on the flash and it works better. I think the pre flashes 'reflections fool the p-ttl mode easily.
Anyone else finding the same?
It seems to need a few practice shoots in wireless p-ttl to get it right, or easier to use A mode with exposure comp dialed in - but still needing few test shots.
Is there an easier way to do wireless flash consitently?
Maybe a flash hot shoe lead is better.

K5 thoughts after 1 week

Thanks for the comments.
Interesting about the focusing screen being more grainy on purpose to help manual focus - as I have a used manual focus lens and a 90mm, f2.5 incoming.
It had not yet crossed my mind that I could have had a D7000 for what the K5 combo cost me - I'm more than happy with the Pentax.

Here are some comments after moving form a Nikon D50 to K5:

1: K5 may have 100% coverage pentaprism viewfinder, not a pentamirror, but the K5 viewfinder seems dullerl. Maybe the screen is just a bit more matte?

2: I find it hard to see all four corners of the K5 viewfinder - need to get my eye really close. Not so on D50.

3: D50 auto iso could be set to come on at a predetermined shutter speed, which helped to enable more hand holdable shots when needed. K5 auto iso is either on or off.

4: In av mode the D50 would indicate when flash is needed. When flash is enabled then is a small exposure meter showed correct exposure or not. If not then slow synch flash would be better. On K5 I have no indication that using flash @ 1/60 is enough or not. Need to take the shot first to see if slow synch flash would have been better.

Not knocking the K5, just highlighting what i'm missing.
The D50 only did iso 200 - 1600, so the K5 is miles ahead in that respect.
I'm also loving the other features on the K5 - big screen, multi exposure, interval timer etc etc.
I have some lenses in bound to play with - 90mm F2.5 A 1:1 macro - non Pentax, and a 55mm 'K' Pentax.

Comments welcome

Thanks. That's what I thought was happening, but the manual says only one thing will flash not all three.

Been through the manual. Can't find an explanation for all 3 settings flashing. They do stop if a light is put on. If the identical settings are transferrred to manual then the exposure is correct, so the camera should'nt be be telling me that there is an exposure issue.

Some general K5 questions

Hello
just got a K5, but need to ask some general questions about a few things, if I may.
1. I am aware that things flash in the display to indicate possible exposure problems in different modes.
What does it mean when shutter speed, F stop and iso are all flashing?
This seems to happen more in low light even when focus light has come on, and pictures come out ok.

2. In Av mode the flash symbol sometimes flashes to indicate flash should be used in certain light conditions. However the same setting of speed, f stop, iso in Tv and manual mode don't make the flash symbol flash and the image is correctly exposed - so why does the camera feel the need to encourage flash useage in Av mode?

3. what do you all do with highlight and shadow correction?
I have highlight off and shadow on medium.

4. I hope to start shooting in Raw - is there any decent free software to learn post processing on?

Thanks in advance

Hello from a lucky guy

Hello to one and all.
I've been using this site for a while to gather info about Pentax dslr.
I've had my Nikon D50 for 5yrs and felt that it is a good time to move on.
As I have no Vr Nikon lenses and most of their better bodies are much larger then the D50, I have decided to jump ship and move to Pentax.
My father in law had an old Pentax 35mm slr and I was always impressed with pictures from it.
I had in mind a used K7 or used Kr - but my wife didn't object too much when I suggested a new K5 with 18-135 and used 50-300 might be better in the long run.
So after selling some Nikon lenses and flash I have the K5!:D.
I now need to take a hell of a lot more photos do it justice.

Now off to K5 section with some questions.
