gp1806 and aknot, Thanks many.

How do I know, before I buy, if a converter can do AF or not? What indicators to look for?

Teleconverters question

I am looking for teleconverters to attach to my 55-300mm AF lens. Are there any teleconverters for AF lenses? If we attach that teleconverter, would AF still work? Would aperture function work? What about other auto settings?

I don't mind any brand at all.

Who else are waiting for a firmware update for K-r to fix the FF problem

Anybody waiting for a fix is just dreaming, IMO. Usually a new camera will be released in August in this line up. August is now only 3 months away. What makes you think that they would release a ff now for K-r? Releasing a FF now would kill the sales of their next model.

It is too late, move on! :D

Pentax K-r firmware update 1.01

What I don't understand is how many ways you find to defend the delay! You seem to be saying because Pentax fixed K-5 issues recently, K-r fix is on the back burner?

Are you assuming that there are only one set of R & D engineers (or only one engineer! ) who fix camera after fixing another one? Can Pentax not afford to have 2 sets of engineers working on 2 seperate camera issues at the same time simultaneously?

So, if 3 types of Pentax cameras have issues, will it take a year to solve the fixes - because you seem to be saying engineers will only look at the next camera after fixing the 1st?

You guys are hilarious!

Tragedy is a tragedy! But,

It is a shame that tragedy which happened only 1 month back is used as an excuse. Pentax K-r was released 8 months back and there have been endless complaints on FF. So, how come the tragedy which happened 1 month back is used as an excuse?

I expected Pentax not to post a FF fix and that is what happened exactly. I returned my camera 2 months back, and 2 months is a long time.

Sorry guys, there is no fix coming. :p

Right. Japan is in a disaster and that is a sorry state.

The question is, what did Pentax do before the disaster?

I understand things about earthquake and all but Pentax just released a new compact camera today. It means a firmware could be released if it is ready. The fact that a firware is not released now only means it is not ready.

Don't use earthquake excuse for everything.

If they name the firmware as the same, nobody will download it. There won't be silent updates because nobody will download the same old numbered update.

Where did you read I said it? So, if a camera doesn't focus in one lighting condition, isn't that considered anamoly?

I expressed the same on live view before, but some guy said I was wrong. It seems some fake posters on this forum are deliberately misleading innocent people.

The FF was there on my camera with all 3 lens I tested 18-55mm, 50-200mm, 50 mm 1.7 lens . It was not just one lens. But, I expected Pentax to tell me/ others that they noticed this issue on all cameras and are working on a fix. They outrightly denied any cameras having that issue.

One who is in denial, how can the company work towards fixing that issue??? Are you all kidding me?

I bought my camera 10 days in advance to cover this event. After all, it was my kids' 1st circus event.

I took Kodak camera because that is all I had available due to Pentax mess up. I ordered another brand DSLR but that is in UPS, so was not shipped.

Some people are saying you knew this issue all along. What do you mean? You mean users like me have to expect that ,a new camera bought at $700, should have serious focussing issues. No, the issue is there with live view as well.

I understand some posters here are in denial and some absolutely love their faulty cameras. some are in high hope that Pentax will post a FF fix, sure but that will take awefully long time and I expect another camera in this line-up to be released within 3 months after that fix.

Let us say Pentax issues a FF fix 2 months later, my question is:

1, Should a DSLR owner who spent $700 lose several months waiting for it? If I shrug off this problem as a non-event, it means I confirm that $700 has no value.
2, How about Pentax show some accountability and refund or rebate some of the $$$ back for the problem and mess they created. I am not even saying they should recall the cameras, mind you that is worse.

Yesterday I took my kids to the circus. The event was very good, we enjoyed it very much. I had to take my old Kodak point and shoot to the circus. Unfortunately, it did not perform well in low light and fast movements.

I had planned on using K-r at this event but then I had to return it last week due to denial of Pentax staff of the FF issue. Even if I decided to keep the camera, I would have sent it to the service center which again will take 1 - 2 months to fix and come back to me. I will miss on important events meanwhile.

What is the lesson learned? Don't buy unreliable cameras, because you don't know when they will fail you.

They won't issue a FIX for K-r. Because come August, it is time for

K-q. We are getting very close to that date.

Voila! :)

I never said you were wrong. In fact, I followed all tests you said.

The only thing I said was I will contact Pentax and see what they will say. They did not identify it is a problem with all cameras. How will they fix if they don't think it is batch problem?

So, I returned.

I also thought about shipping charges and hassle of dealing with them for several months. It is inconvenience which I avoided.

The support guy was fine, I don't think it is his mistake not to identify the problem. But, I thought "one who doesn't recognize the problem, what guarantee is there that there will be a firmware fix?"

All agents are currently busy. Please stand by.
An agent will be with you in a moment. Thank you for your patience.
You have been connected to Randall S.
Randall S: Thank you for contacting Pentax chat support , how may I help you?
xxxxx: Hi, My name is xxxxx
xxxxx: I bought a New Pentax K-r last week. The camera has focussing issues in indoor tungsten light. I am not able to focus. It is big error in fact
Randall S: are you sure that you just don't have enough light for the autofocus to work?
xxxxxx: I have enough light, that is not the problem
Randall S: if you suspect a problem with your K-R I would advise you to send it in to us for examination or try to exchange it with your dealer.
Randall S: here is the procedure to use to send it in....
Randall S: Remove the battery, lens and memory card. Send just the camera with a note describing the problem.
If you purchased the camera new in the last 12 months include a copy of your sales receipt.
Our service department address is:

PENTAX Service Department
250 North 54th St.
Chandler, AZ 85226

If your camera is out of warranty, or the repair is not covered under the warranty, we will examine your camera and supply you with a written estimate (this estimate is provided at no charge). Upon approval (and payment in full) of the estimate, we will proceed with the repair. Approvals may be given by phone with a Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. If you decide against the repair estimate, your camera will be returned to you for a $12 shipping and handling charge.
xxxxxxx: Will exchange work? Me and my friend bought the camera at the same time from the same dealer. The problem exists on his camera too. We researched on google and found that many users have the same problem documented
Randall S: I can't guarantee it wouldn't happen with an exchange. You can send it in to have our techs look at it.
xxxxxxx: If this problem is happening to every K-r, how would sending it help? Is Pentax working on a firmware fix?
Randall S: I don't believe it is happening with all K-R cameras. We have not heard of this as a known issue from Pentax Japan and neither are we aware of if they are planning a firmware upgrade that would address any autofocus issue in the camera.
Randall S: At this point we have to advise you to send it in to be examined so we can find out what might be the problem with your camera.
xxxxxxx: Unfortunately, it means Pentax is not even looking at this as an issue despite complaints from many users'
Randall S: Again, send it in and we'll be happy to take a look at the camera.
xxxxxxx: Thank you.
Randall S: Thank you for contacting Pentax chat support, have a great day!

The Randall guy was the one who talked to me as well. He talked the same exact things as above.

He said Pentax Japan doesn't know of these issues which seemed lame answer to me. Why did he refer to Pentax Japan? There is no Pentax USA? Then he said I could be using inadequate light source. All the same.

I can't continue with the hope that Pentax will fix this issue. I am buying another camera, no loss for me though.

I didn't contact Pentax or my retailer because of the holiday weekend. Today I contacted Pentax using the livechat feature. The CSR with whom I talked denied there was any mass problem with all K-r s. He said I should send my camera to them to fix if there was a problem.

While I say, I am okay with the camera, this denial by Pentax pinched me a bit.

On the camera,

in menu,

under custom menu option 2

under 13. Auto white Balance under Tungsten Light ,

there are 2 options 1. Subtle correction 2. Strong correction.
__________________________________________________________

Has anyone tried the focus changing from 1. subtle correction to 2. Strong correction?

Is the focus better?
