Nature Joshua Trees in Full Bloom

This year has been a banner year to view the Joshua in bloom as the moisture content was perfect and large blooms are now present in most of the Mojave Desert that we have visited. The Joshua Tree has bell-shaped blooms, 1.25 to 1.5 inches large, each with 6 creamy, yellow-green sepals, crowded into 12 to 18 inch, many-branched clusters with an unpleasant odor. The trees bloom mostly in the spring, although not all of them will flower annually. Joshua Trees (and most other yuccas) rely on the female Pronuba Moth for pollination. No other insect or animal visiting the blooms transfers the pollen from one flower to another. In fact, the female Yucca Moth has evolved special organs to collect and distribute the pollen onto the surface of the flower. She lays her eggs in the flowers' ovaries, and when the larvae hatch, they feed on the yucca seeds. Without the moth's pollination, the Joshua Tree could not reproduce, nor could the moth, whose larvae would have no seeds to eat. Although an old Joshua Trees can sprout new plants from its roots, only the seeds produced in pollinated flowers can scatter far enough to establish a new stand. The fruit is elliptical and green-brown and can be seen in photo 4, a photo taken at night to better show the fruit. Six-celled, 2.5 to 4 inches, and somewhat fleshy, it dries and falls soon after maturity in late spring revealing many flat seeds. The last photo is of the Joshua and Yucca plants before bloom.

The FedEx truck arrived a little while ago with a packet of these little posters addressed to Mrs Rupert! She has started putting them on all her outside plants, and so far there isn't a Squirrel in sight!

We'll have to see if Otis is still defiant in the morning when he makes his usual rounds to "attend to the care of plants". :hmm:

This morning he showed absolutely no sign of backing down....he's holding his ground!

If he is fearful, he sure is a good bluffer! No wonder he is the king of poker on Tuesday nights!

Mrs Rupert thanks you Charlie, and will send you a big bowl of Squirrel Helper with lots of meat if these don't keep out Otis and his wayward Army buddies.

Regards!:)

Don't get mad at squirrels--get even. When they see you bringing this home they will toe the mark and will no longer be a problem. If they don't--- "Bon Appetit".It's a win win situation.:D--charliezap

Nature The power of "Mooseful" thinking

So our Aussie buddies made it a point from the moment we met there was no such thing as the mythical Canadian Moose. Grant was adamant all the moose spied from the highways were cardboard cut outs. It became the running joke while we were in Banff. Oh the next place is a great place for moose, or the moose come out at night here, or hey was that a moose I saw back in those bushes !! Oh yeah this is prime moose bogs here. I think you get the point. After several days in Banff / Yoho area we then turned our tales to oh Jasper will have moose, even on the drive we were ribbing them. We even visited a place called Moose Meadows!

On the first full day in Jasper I spotted this sign at the Lake we were at and took a snap. I asked Grant if he wanted a picture of him beside it.

Well I kid you not about 10 minutes and 4 landscape shutter clicks later and well , I'll let the pictures tell the story.

But as luck would have it, he came out for some fine shots ...

I have many more ....

Jim and I acted as myth busters and put to rest the mythical Canadian Moose. Here's Grant as we pulled into a roadside stop to have a few "pops" to celebrate our good fortune (doing his best Moose impression)

I did say 'pops' as in plural did I not ?

And to put the icing on the cake a young couple came out the woods with about $15,000.00 worth of Nikon gear (a 300 f2.8 and a 500 f4 I think?) when we asked what they were shooting it was basically some sort of wild rodent. When they asked what we were shooting and Grant showed them on his $1500 K5 , they immediately said 'I HATE YOU' to which we all just smiled and cracked another Kokanee :D
