New K-3 owner first time setup up advice

Something that you will notice immediately is that the K-3 uses buttons for some important functions, where the K-5 IIs uses switches. I have a strong preference for buttons, because they can be controlled electronically.

For general shooting, I use:
- Program Shift, Low-speed continuous burst, AF-S, multi-point metering, center point AF, SR on.

I have a User mode dedicated to birds in flight, sports, action, etc.:
- TAv mode, Hi-speed burst, AF-C, center-point metering, expanded AF point, SR off

All I have to do to change from still shooting to action, is rotate the mode dial to USER1, and I'm ready to go.

I have USER2 set up for flash photography. I haven't set USER3 for anything permanent so far.

da15 starburst?

Here's how I do it
1) Av mode, select anything from f/16 to f/22
2) manual focus at, say, 30 feet into the scene
3) Point the camera so the sun is not in frame and hit AE lock
4) Recompose now and take the shot.

K-3 compares well to D800

Just to be sure: My D800 definitely has a better, more capable sensor than the K-3. But I'm less concerned with the sensor as I am with the total system: i.e. a particular lens + sensor combination. In my case the only choices that Nikon offers its customers to reach 400mm are either the $7000 200-400mm or the $2700 80-400mm. For travel purposes, I find both lenses to be excessively bulky and heavy (not to mention expensive). What I was curious was to see if the K-3 + 60-250mm could "compete" with a comparable setup using the Nikon D800. And I am satisfied that for TELE purposes, the K-3 + 60-250mm combination is quite capable. For wide angle, the Nikon D800 still reigns supreme. For example, I will continue to use my D800 with the Nikkor 14-24mm. From my tests, there is no other camera in the world that can match it.

But for tele/travel purposes, after having done this quick test I'm leaning towards adding the Pentax K-3 + 60-250mm to my kit. I might even try the new Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 on it when it becomes available later this year.

What is patently clear to me is that Nikon has dropped the ball. I've been waiting for years for the arrival of the D400 as a backup camera for my D800 to no avail. How could I have guessed that Pentax would deliver just the kind of camera I was waiting for? Good for Pentax. Bad for Nikon.

The K-3 is an incredible machine. Especially since this is your first DSLR ever - I am confident it will keep you guessing and learning for the next 3-4 years. It's also generally agreed upon as the best APS-C camera money can buy. Seriously.

Crop sensor is a bit smaller than the full frame standard that uses a sensor the same size as traditional 35mm film - don't worry about what that difference means. At this point in time it means nothing to you. Trust me.

The K-3 was not designed to be used in "Green Mode." Of course it works perfectly well in fully automatic mode, but what I mean by that is it was designed for you, the photographer, to drive it. To change the settings, to envision your photograph before you take it, knowing how to turn the dials and push the buttons to make that vision a reality. It's without any doubt that the tool you have in your hand is nothing short of professional quality. Nothing short of it at all.

If you really want to take advantage of the incredible capabilities of it as opposed to using it as a very expensive "point and shoot," learn the following:
  • Depth of Field - what it means, and how to manage it and when having more (deeper) depth of field is critical (i.e. landscapes) and when having less (shallower) depth of field is critical (i.e. portraits). Also, how to accomplish less or more depth of field in your photos and what affords depth of field (large aperture on your lens, distance to subject, distance of subject to background, zoom/magnification all contribute to DOF control, with the first one being the most critical).

  • Shutter Speed - yes it has to be balanced for a good exposure, but you also need to learn what it means. Too long a shutter speed and it won't freeze even a person standing there for you frozen for a portrait. Too fast a shutter speed, and you've unnecessarily raised your ISO to poor quality levels.

  • ISO - aka "sensitivity" it allows you to increase or decrease your sensors responsiveness and sensitivity towards light. In poor light (say inside a bar) it becomes your best friend, but at a cost in image quality. Learn what that cost is.

  • Exposure - how the three critical photographic settings (Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO) are in a three-way marriage. Think of the three points of a triangle that you need to always balance, as they always change depending on what your priorities are (depth of field, freezing action, etc) and more importantly and much more constraining - the amount (and quality) of light available to you when taking the shot. Here is a great simulator that will help with getting started:

  • Composition - a good photograph is not just taking a good photograph technically, but remember that the "study of light" is also an art. Compositional guides will be your friend until you learn how to break them purposefully because a certain shot/situation calls for it. Such 'rules' or 'guides' are the Rule of Thirds, Negative Space, Golden Spiral, and many others. Here are two guides provided by Pentax Forums that should provide an excellent starting point (and they're quick to read with plenty of examples!):

  • Focal Length - learn what difference focal lengths afford in terms of "Field of View." The lower the number, the wider the focal length, and vice versa. See what this means with regard to different shooting scenarios (indoors, portraits, outdoors, landscapes, far away shots, etc.). You have a zoom lens, so this should be easy to experiment with by just zooming in and out.

  • Your K-3 - Read the manual. Read the manual. Read the manual. And then keep it in the bathroom and read it. It will answer many of your questions and teach you what the different dials, buttons, etc are for your camera, and how to change specific settings.

  • Av, Tv, TAv Modes - as soon as you can, get out of green mode. These three modes are "Manual/Automatic" type modes. Meaning you change 2 of the three settings (Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO), and the third is automatically set by the camera's internal light meter to balance the exposure (the triangle reference above). Av is "Aperture Priority" where you change the aperture and ISO manually and the camera sets the shutter speed. This is arguably the most popular and used camera setting, so it would be a great place to start. I shoot only "M" (full manual where you change all settings manually - nothing is automatic) now, but I started in Av after switching from green mode with a trusty Pentax K-7. Do not wait the six months that I did before going off Green mode - it only delayed my progress that much longer. Initially you won't get good photos - way too dark, way too bright, or way too blurry because the shutter speed will be too slow. That's ok. Don't go back to Green mode.

I could go on, but this seems to be a good starting point, and if you have too much to focus on, then you learn nothing, right? And once you start really learning what these tenets mean, the rest will fall into place through self-discovery.

In the mean time, make sure to always keep your lens cap on when not using your lens, and always use your lens hood. Always. You will see the vast majority of shooters around you will not have a lens hood, or worse, leave it at home or have it reversed in the storage manner while shooting. I don't understand this, but don't fall into that trap. The lens hood not only benefits the quality of your images by cutting glare from the sun (think of your pull-down shade when you are driving - doesn't it make a world of difference when the sun is in your eye?), but it physically protects your lens. Just the other day I was walking around with a camera and I slipped on ice walking down an old staircase. I punched the brick wall with my camera and lens that I had in my right hand (there was no hand rail) and the lens hood was destroyed. The lens and the camera? Perfectly fine.

Hope this helps, and once again, you have a camera that you do not have any idea how powerful it is. This is not a bad thing nor meant as an insult. But devote the time to unlocking bits of that horse power, and your photography will start to take off, and the investment in such a machine will be more than worth it.

And welcome to the Pentax family ;)

Lens information missing in EXIF

Kim, I suspect that software is modifying the EXIF data at some point. I checked a jpeg straight out my own K-3 and the EXIF I read using exiftool v. 9.01 is very comprehensive. The EXIF from your jpegs on Zenfolio seem quite stripped down?

PM me if you would like to send me a jpeg straight from your camera using the lens you used previously, and I can read the EXIF and send you back a copy of the EXIF text.

Lens information missing in EXIF

Your camera isn't defective. For EXIF information like lens information to be displayed, your image software needs to know how the information is recorded in the camera EXIF.

It seems the K-3 has introduced a few changes into the way camera and lens EXIF is written, so most EXIF reading sotware (Lightroom, Aperture etc included) will need to be updated to reflect those changes in order to read all the data recorded by the camera.

There's currently a whole thread or two about it over at the other forum. Handily, the author of exiftool (Phil Harvey) is a participant in the thread over there and is aware of the K-3 changes. So an update to exiftool that is K-3 aware may be coming soon (v9.41?). Many downstream tools rely on exiftool so will probably inherit the changes, but others that don't will have to make their own modifications in order to properly read the EXIF in K-3 RAWs and JPGs.

The one tool at the moment that should have the ability to read all the camera EXIF would be Pentax Digital Camera Utility v5, included with the camera. How does that read and display your lens information?

K3 manual - What is Ricoh thinking?

I received several emails about writing an e-book for the Pentax K-3. I just read this post and in response, I will put the GR on the back burner and immediately work on the Pentax K-3 e-book. I always felt that any OEM manuals were not the friendliest way to learn about your camera. The OEM manuals usually tell you what, I usually try to include the what, where, why, when, how, general photography tips and a catalog of what current lenses and equipment are available at the time of writing.

I will work on producing an e-book for the K-3 and get it out by early December.

You can watch the progress here PENTAX DSLRs and get the e-book here http://www.ebooks4cameras.com/ when available.

BestRegards to all my Pentax Friends,

First impressions...I'm already 10 minutes behind schedule so they'll be quick:

-The silver color of the FA Limiteds is just a bit more gray than the body. I'd say it's a 95%+ color match. Very hard to tell a difference unless you look at it.
-Leather strap is actually reddish with red stitching.
-This thing is FAST.
-AF is a rocket, even with the 77. This bullet point deserves its own line relative to the one above it.

A quick sample with the 77 at f/2.8 (IMGP0003.jpg ;))

Will post pics of the camera later tonight or tomorrow :)

1st a little background, started out with the K10, then K20, K7, K5, now K3 so not only has the K series evolved but I have too! It came in late yesterday afternoon and after putting in a new freshly charged aftermarket battery and two PNY 32GB Elite Performance SD cards, I performed the preliminary set up. First thing was it is noticeably heftier. The back LCD is brighter and crisper than previous models. The viewfinder besides having a bigger image was likewise brighter and I don't see any spots. The menu seems to have a better layout and controls are more handy. Having read of some of the problems others were having I tried installing only one SD card, switching cards, etc. but could not produce the lock up another poster experienced. The level indicator is spot on. Next I tried several different lenses, zoom and Limiteds, under different conditions for focus speed and operation. All seemed to have a snappier, quicker response focusing when compared to my K5. Mirror action is quieter. Love the new auto-focus points. Using my 17-50 Tammy, the pop-up flash worked flawlessly. My shooting was done to test the mechanics of the camera. While I reviewed the images and all were satisfactory I'm not going to post them now as there was nothing remarkable. Other than the initial settings I left everything in default and will post images after I get a chance to reread the owners manual and do a proper setup. I usually wait 6 months before getting a new model but I am extremely happy to have purchased this camera. :D:D:D

My K-3 AF experiences

This is my experience, not some lab report. I shoot mainly long lenses, and have been shooting with the K-5 with a variety of manual focus and autofocus lenses for a couple of years. I have been using the DA*300 for the most part, excepting the bright summer days when I use a Sigma 150-500 OS. I have had great success with these combinations, but have also run into situations where the limits of the equipment either cause frustration, make it difficult to get a sharp photo, or don't even bother because I don't want to waste time. I can get birds in flight with my manual focus lens, but not very many. The conditions that I shoot in range from perfect to utterly miserable. If I wait for the perfect day, I would shoot maybe half a dozen days a year. This isn't lab or studio conditions, but real conditions that I shoot in, and if I may, get some very nice shots from time to time.

There are some situations where I've run into problems

1. Low light focus. It was a regular occurrence, even during the summer, to have the K-5 and DA*300 not focus at all. There wasn't enough light, enough contrast, and it would either try and fail, or not even try. In good light with sharp contrast it worked fine. Some particular situations where this was an issue was when trying to focus on wildlife in the trees or bushes.

2. Another situation where it was difficult to acquire focus was when shooting a small subject on a horizontal plane. For example, last week I ran across an American Pipit that sat obligingly in the middle of a gravel road. The K-5/DA*300 would either focus on a detail on the gravel, or the grass and bushes behind. The same thing happens when shooting water birds at a distance. The contrast of choppy water or the far shore would get focussed, and not the desired subject. I believe the cause was a combination of the low light inadequacy and the large focus points.

3. A third situation is what I call threading the needle. This is where a subject is in a busy scene with many contrasty elements in the fore and back ground. Not an uncommon situation in many contexts; for me it was a bird in the bushes. The large focus points and the inconsistency or unpredictable focus logic made it an exercise in frustration to try to thread the focus point in between obstacles to find and home in on what I wanted. A longer focal length helps, magnifying the subject so that the camera has a better chance of focusing on it, but that wasn't the only problem.

4. Moving subjects were very difficult to focus on. Many things conspire to make this difficult. A large focus point, the inability to pick out low contrast subjects from a busy background, as well as the speed of the focus-mirror-open shutter timing gives you lots of out of focus shots. There are quite a few discrete challenges here. For example, a bird flying against the sky is not difficult to focus on, but the speed of the image capture train will cause a problem if the direction of movement is towards out of focus. If the bird is flying against a tree or mountain background, then the low contrast as well as large focus point makes it probable that the background will be in focus. If the subject is moving towards the camera the speed of the adjustments is critical. The K-5 is a challenge to focus properly in these circumstances.

5. Using live view had its own challenges. Focusing my DA*300 mounted on a tripod using the CDAF in Live view was unsatisfactory, most times unsuccessful. Using a manual focus lens, the magnified Liveview screen was helpful, but the delay in updating the screen meant that it was easy to overshoot the focus adjustments.

First impressions? The limits of focus are the obstreperous subject or inept operator. The DA*300 felt slow and clumsy on the K-5. It feels lightning fast and accurate on the K-3. The shutter noise is different, not louder. The buttons feel more positive than the mushy K-5 feel.

The center focus point is small. I took these shots with spot focus, afc. I followed the bird around, and when I was able to get the point on the bird, it focused. It was a technical challenge, but a positive one; if I point it at something, it will focus quickly. Here are some shots. They are processed in Darktable, compiled from the development branch. There is no profiling of the K-3 coded as yet, but I had no problem reading the files or doing corrections. They are cropped, some substantially to frame what I wanted to shoot, often the limit of cropping before losing quality. Some exposure and contrast adjustments were made, as well as noise reduction.

This is the fourth shot I took with the camera. 1/400, iso 200 f4.

This is what it was doing. Note that the focus is on the background. 1/800 iso 400 f4

This was a long way away. I've shot this site numerous times but the K-3 was able to focus on what I wanted. iso 1600 1/2000 f4. Cropped.

The focus point on this shot was about the size of it's head. Cropped, 1/320 iso 160 f4.

Easy shot, especially when the focus mechanism ignores the intervening brush. 1/640 iso 1000 f4, cropped. Nice and sharp.

This is where I was impressed. Not a great shot, but illustrative. There were a bunch of chickadees, brown creepers and rather frenetic yellow crowned kinglets working their way through the bush. I shot this guy for quite a few minutes as he went from tree to tree. I had it on 7 point with the center as main. I was able to easily shoot through intervening brush to focus. The challenge was low light, low contrast subject and movement, focus was simply just working. I didn't bother doing this type of shooting with the K-5, it didn't work and was very frustrating. I will do much more, I enjoy this.

So far, low light is not an issue at all. If there is a surface to focus on, it will. The size of the focus point is very nice for what I shoot. If it is there, it will focus on it. My lens feels brand new, fast and confident. So far I'm very pleased. Now to test the more powerful and complex capabilities.

OK I did undestood the question but to be honest I dont know where the problem is ??!!

Going from AF-S to AF-C is 2 clicks (I know it was just one before) but it is blazing fast to do !
From single to multi point focus is 1 click (same as before, well before it was rotating a knob now it's pressing a button)

Keep in mind the reactivity with the menus, buttons etc is so much faster than the K5 that the whole K3 seems A LOT faster to operate to me.

If the only issue of this K3 is this, We have a WINNER :D

You asked ...

I rushed at my local photo booth during lunch break to get one K3, took useless pics just to see that shit working and ....

...coming from a K5 1st gen :
  • Looks well built / kinda heavy

  • It's quiet

  • Back screen is huge

  • Viewfinder is good

  • Burst mode is killing

  • Ergonomy's great, more an evolution than a revolution, took me 10 mins to configure the K3 as per my K5.

  • The overall reactivity is a leap forward...that shit is fast !

  • AF seems wayyyyy better than on my K5, it's fast and it's precise....but I havent had the chance to stress it as my battery died on me LOL

Im at work, no way I can inject my RAW's in Lr5 before at least 7/8 hours from now so I can't see my pics for now.

Overall first impression is DAMN GOOD !

Disclaimer :
I only had K20D and a K5 before in terms of REFLEX.
I never used the K5 2nd Generation.
I never used any other brand reflex
Im self taught, no photographic knowledge.
You will see my type of shooting in my gallery, mostly concert and portrait.

We'll be sure to do a detailed evaluation of the K-3's AF once we get the camera in our hands, so stay tuned for the in-depth review!

Personally, I wasn't blown away by the K-3's AF performance while playing around with it at PhotoPlus (but this is based on a pre-production body, so I don't want to speak too soon). Yes, the live view AF will feel a lot faster in good light thanks to the power powerful screwdrive motor, but it seemed to me that the K-3 was still using the older CDAF algorithm from the K-5 rather than the newer one deployed in the K-30/K-50. Through the viewfinder, the K-3 behaved just like the K-5 II. Although it has more AF points, they still cover the same area; the effect that this might have on tracking performance will be a part of our in-depth review.
