50mm f1.2 pentax - M

I have a SMC Pentax 1:1.2/50mm, no A on it anywhere. I also have a SMC Pentax-M 1:1.4 50mm, no A on it anywhere. So even if my f1.2 doesn't exist elsewhere, it is real here. Now my query, I prefer to use the 1.4, believing it to be sharper than the 1.2 at f8. Does anyone agree, or is it just in my head?

Your opinion on Pentax K 135 mm/2.8 Pallas Magenta AM

For Adam

I have the Sears 135mm f2. and it takes a 52mm filter and has 180 degrees of rotation to focus, stop to stop. I also have the Pallas Magenta 135mm f2.8 lens and it takes a 55mm filter and has 270 degrees of rotation to focus, stop to stop. Assuming the optics are equal, in my book the Pallas would be the better lens for manual focusing. They aren't the same lens and the Pallas is heavier. I haven't taken pics with either as I don't use 135mm much. Both are M42.

In years gone by I would have said that it "needs some TLC" or maybe a fixer upper. Nice shots

Pentax Shutter Count

Hello Paul

I am not confusing shutter count and image name. I can read the shutter count of each of my four Nikon cameras in the EXIF info in XnView. It appears that Pentax has not chosen to share the makerware which decodes the shutter count with either XnView or IMatch as neither will read the count. The EXIF line is is there but is filled with special characters like you get with Alt+numlocks, and does not show a shutter count. What software do you use to determine the shutter count on a used camera when you buy one?

In any case I'm dropping this, I have determined that the last three digits of my shutter count were 888 a day and a half ago. myshuttercount.com supplied the info when I uploaded a photo.

Hello Arn

Nice shot. Nice area to live also.

I'm not much help on Apple stuff, I have found Faststone the quickest and easiest resizer, works for me anyway. I just bought a Vivitar 75-205 on ebay last month with a Nikon mount and mounted it on the D-70 this afternoon. I go do some stuff tomorrow and see how it works. Another odd thing about that buy was that the seller lived in Campbell River. I drove up and picked it up. Saved him 10.50 postage.

It appears that Pentax makerware precludes easy reading of the shutter count. That's pretty much what the forum at imatch said. If the shutter count rolls over at 10,000 then the reading of 888 could be 888; 10888; 20888 and etc. so in effect the shutter count is useless as the shutter should go 100,000 actuations before replacement. Right?

I'm using a *istDL which I bought used. XnView will show the shutter count for Nikon in EXIF info. For Pentax, the shutter count line is there but the count is not shown. I used Check shutter count online - My Shutter Count.com and was told that my count is 888. That jibes with a query with same camera a couple of days ago. So all that looks good, except that I think I read somewhere that Pentax only counts to 10000 and rolls over starting again at 1. Does anyone know at what point Pentax makerware shutter count reverts to zero?

Hello Arn

I should exercise more tact and I apologise for my remarks about Vancouver. It is only my opinion, but I can't help compare it to the Vancouver of the 1960's when I worked there. Anyway I'll shut up about that.

I outlined the fixed focal length lenses that I have in a reply to Eddy above. I imagine I'll be here fairly often as I try to assemble enough knowledge to at least look competent. If in your research you find a golden bullet, I would sure like to hear about it. Take care.

Hi Eddy

Fixed focal length lenses are:f4 200mm;f4 100mm;f3.5 135 mm;f1.2 50mm;f2.8 28mm and f2 50mm. I've had fair results with the 200mm and the 135. I haven't tried the others yet. I bought a Tamron 28-105 f4 - 5.6 because I thought I should at least become familiar with the camera as it was meant to be used, then learn the M lenses. So we will see how it goes.

I'm not really competent enough yet to get the most from these lenses. That will come, I hope. Took some shots of the glacier and Mt Washington last night at sunset with the Pentax 80-200mm zoom f4.5 and at the same time some with a Nikon D50 using Nikon AF-S 70-300 mm lens. I thought the Nikon pictures were better, but again, that may be just me. I'll keep pluggin.

I live on Vancouver Island (Courtenay). You have to wonder what criteria they use to publish bumff like that. You could'nt pay me enough to live in Vancouver again- but maybe that's just me.

I'm just getting started with Pentax and am still a Nikon user. I fell into a bunch of Pentax M lenses and associated stuff as well as LX and MX film cameras, so decided to see how they did. I have ditched film, deciding that, for me, the reward wasn't worth the effort. Now I'm playing with the lenses but still have all the AF Nikon stuff. I'm using a Pentax 1st DL.
