Rubber door USB/HDMI/DC port broken - DIY repair.

I recently brought my K-7 out of retirement for my 10 year old daughter to take pictures with and the first thing to happen was this cover and the microphone one break. I've just told her that the camera can't get wet. I don't think there's much harm in her using it without the covers. I will say this though, when the microphone cover broke part of it was lodged in the hole and had to be removed with a dental pick.

645 lenses on a crop sensor?

I currently shoot with a KP and primarily use the 31, 16-50, 60-250 (all non-HD versions), but also carry around 2x M-era 50s for lens reversal macros, but they barely see any use. My 10 y/o daughter is showing interest in photography, and specifically of birds. I've got an older cheap 100-300 coming in for her to play around/learn with, but it's peeked my interest in getting good bird shots as well. For now, what I have works fine for getting birds at our bird feeder outside of a bedroom window, but just looking at options for expansion in the future. Yes, I was mainly looking at the 300mm F2.8, either the FA or the A* variants. I realize that needing the adapter would increase the initial price some, but it still comes out a bit cheaper with one lens, but adding a second or third makes it a better looking opportunity. I don't know how much I'd use a non-auto aperture, non-auto focus lens (as I don't pull out my 50s very often), but then I had used them some until I got the 31 and now they're just obsoleted in my setup.

My daughter will be starting with my old K-7 and a 100-300mm 4.5-6.7 Quantaray lens - something cheap enough that it won't be a big loss if it gets damaged, but still AF and auto aperture so she can pick it up easier.

645 lenses on a crop sensor?

Lately I've been looking at longer length lenses and have found that on the second hand market there are a lot of 645 lenses out there, especially the FA 300mm, available at much lower prices than other 300mm lenses for the 35mm or crop sensor market. I do realize that the adapters wouldn't allow for either autofocus or auto aperature, but what else am I missing here? Also, I realize I'd be carrying around a lot more weight than what would be necessary. Just wondering if there's any other drawback that has kept people from exploring this as an alternative for good telephoto/supertelephoto glass.

Installing Digital Camera Utility with no CD drive

For Windows at least, I found a slightly easier workaround. Rename your root drive to the S-SW140 (or other variants previously mentioned) and run the "updater" utility from that drive. No need for a memory card or USB stick. This was important to me as my work devices don't allow us to write/erase from removable media, but I have admin privileges that allow me to rename the drive. Rename it back to the original name when you're done.

Yes, it was just enough for me to get a fingernail under it to pull the flash up. If you push forward on back of the flash, just next to the viewfinder, while also pushing the front of the flash to the left or right, you should be able to get a fingernail under the edge of the flash and get it to come up. It doesn't take a lot of force to get it up either.

First time I've uploaded pictures here, so we'll see how well it works.

My button actually got lose on me earlier on the day it fell off. I stopped messing with it when it got lose. It fell off when I had hiked out to the banks of the Brazos river. Since then I've had some black electrical tape over the hole.

Even though I've carved this recess in the corner of the flash, I still try to keep the strain off of the catch that holds the flash closed by pushing the flash to one side and slightly forward as I pull it up, in hopes that it won't break the catch or wear it down too much.

As for the reputation and nature of the product, I work as a design engineer for a very large company and can say that all products have their flaws. Some are due to management decisions. Some come from give and take to reduce costs, weight, assembly time, etc. Some come political decisions within the company. Most are just things the engineering team didn't think about or didn't think would cause it to break. Besides, this is the first of this "body style". I would hope that they have fixed some of these issues when they went to the K-5 or K-5 II.

Good luck with your camera and happy shooting!

I'm pretty sure that mine broke off with a piece still in there. If that is the case for you, you'll have to dismantle the camera to replace it. I have not dismantled a camera since the ZX-7/5 days, and then I was following a repair manual obtained on ebay.

Personally I hate the look of the pop-up flash, and my DA* 16-50 and DA* 60-250 lenses cast shadows on subjects when trying to use it. Also I just don't like the look of the pictures I get with it. I only use it as the transmitter for wireless mode with my Metz 48-AF1 (in combination with the Nikon SG-3IR).

On mine, I took a pocket knife and carved a fingernail recess into the side of the pop-up flash flange. This doesn't take away from its functionality and is hardly noticeable. Honestly, I think the flash button broke because I fidget with stuff and that's one of the more common things I fidget with when I have my camera in hand.

This just happened to mine over the weekend. We had been camping and I was on a hike down at the Brazos River banks when I noticed my camera making a whistling sound like a dog toy whenever I zoomed my lenses in and out. I don't want to upgrade right now, and I don't think it would be worth the expense of sending it in to CRIS Camera in Pheonix (Pentax USA repair contractor) to have it repaired. I figured out how to get the pop up to come up without much effort for now. Looks like I'll be using some tape to keep the dirt/water out of the hole until I get a new camera.

15+ aperature blade lens listing

Does anyone know of a fairly comprehensive list of lenses with 15+ aperture blades? The old Asahi Takumar Kogaku lenses have caught my eye recently. I know that they're M37 mount, but I work with a machinist who thinks it'd be fairly simple for him to make the adapter for me.

I guess it also helps that I'm very interested in the look of an all chrome lens on my K-7.

If anyone knows of a list please let me know.

At the Texas Renaissance Festival last weekend I noted the following: Many camera phones and power zoom models (although not many compact or other type point and shoots), the normal blathering of Canons and Nikons, one Canon 1D series camera, a film SLR (Nikon I think), and one of Mamiya's 645 models.

Of course I also noted the overwhelming number of people dressed in home made outfits they wouldn't be caught dead wearing anywhere else...and most of them revealing way too much. Quite a few scantily clad people (women AND men). One particularly large guy was wearing a wedding dress and wings. (Presumably, he got the wedding dress in the divorce and was wearing it to spite her.) I find it interesting though just how popular it seems to be to wear a fake fox's tail on any outfit...

PENTAX US website facelift

I think they did more than just layout changes on the new site. I don't know if any of the products listed have changed, but I did notice the following:

The Pentax Digital Camera Utility software updates are no longer listed under the K-7 or the K-5. The only place I've found them was on the pentax.jp site.

I believe it's K-r. But I'm sure they'd be willing to sell you a K-R if you really want.

I don't recall this very well, but I could've sworn that there were more FA lenses on the website before the facelift.

Does anyone know for certain whether or not any of the product lineup has changed along with the facelift?

At Moody Gardens (Galveston, TX) yesterday I ran into another Pentaxian using a black K-r. He asked if I knew of anywhere localy to obtain Pentax lenses but I told him I hadn't seen anything worth it in the area.

On my way back to Houston, we stopped at Fry's Elec. and I noticed they stock the K-r and a DA 50-200 lens. That's the first time I've seen anything new from Pentax in the Houston area. There are a few shops that have some used lenses, but not much that's worth it.

That and all the dust that you can see in the 4th image.

Don't know how you can rate something ex++ when the outer coating is scratched like this.
