Hi Jonah and az1895,
Thank you for your views!
I think that az1895 is right: The K-5 works fine for me and I am happy with it, so let it be!

I have a K-5 with the lenses Pentax 18-135 and 55-300 and Sigma 70 mm macro and 10-20 mm f3.5.
I use the 18-135 most of the time, and the 55-300 for animals at distance, and the Sigma 70 sometimes for portraits, and the Sigma 10-20 mm rarely for landscapes.
I take pictures of landscapes, nature, people, animals, street, still life, and other things. I always use raw format and Photoshop CS6 with Adobe Camera Raw (ACR).
I am satisfied with my K-5. The only improvement that I would like to see is in light metering, where the K-5 sometimes misses,
but this is not serious because I can improve the exposure afterwards with ACR. The K-3 has better light metering.
The K-3 has better auto focus than the K-5, but for me the K-5 auto focus works just fine.
I am not sure that more pixels with the K-3 would be an advantage for me, since the 16 Mpixels of my K-5 are quite enough.
The K-3 is a little bigger and weighs more than the K-5 which is a disadvantage.
So an upgrade to the K-3 does not seem motivated to me.
Have I missed something?

Today I tried the 55-300 lens again outdoors hand held with more than 60 test shots and almost only with TAv 500/F8, just a few shots with M. Nearly all pictures were sharp enough, and ISO was not too high, so no noise. Yesterday I took pictures from indoors through window glass, and maybe this lens is sensitive to that so sharpness will suffer.

Thank you Pat!
Yes, TAv mode improved the results, although some noise caused by high ISO appeared.
Pictures of house brick roofs were sharper than pictures of still standing cars (focusing difficulty?)
I guess that a monopod can be used to advantage, and I will bring one on the excursion.

I just bought the Pentax 55-300 ED in a local shop which had actually the best price. I have taken about twenty test shots, and some are very sharp but some are not sharp at all, especially those at 300 mm. It seems that you have to be quite careful with focusing and perhaps also hold the camera very steadily although it has anti-shake. But the sharp test images show that the lens is promising, and I will probably try it for real on Sunday at an excursion in nature with my photo club.

Thank you all for your fine answers, and also for your superb pictures!
It works really well to ask this helpful and knowledgable community.
Both the Pentax 55-300 and the Sigma 70-300 seem to be good and sharp lenses.
Right now I am inclined to choose the Pentax because it is smaller and lighter.

Sten

I am thinking about getting a telezoom to my K-5. I have looked at the Sigma AF 70-300/4-5,6 DG OS, and it is probably good but it is big and it seems to suffer from some zoom creep, and it has anti-shake which is not necessary with Pentax although it can be turned off (or that of the camera body can be turned off).
I would appreciate your view of which is the best 70-300 lens for K-5.
Best regards,
Sten

It is nice to see the great interest that this matter arouses.
I have tried the Jessop extension tubes that I bought, and they work in the respect that aperture is transferred. Auto focus does not work, but with macro you generally use manual focus anyway.
I think I will settle with these Jessop tubes and work with them.

Sten

Thank you Blue!
This could be a good alternative to the Vivitar AT-23.
I have now put in a "Wanted" ad for the Kenko and listed it for "gear watching".
I have also ads locally here in Sweden both for the Vivitar and the Kenko.

Hi Duncan,
If you look at the side of the 36 mm tube, it will tell if it is an AT-22 or AT-23.
I want an AT-23 since it has the electrical contacts - AT-22 does not.
Beste regards,
Sten

I wonder what the difference is between Vivitar AT-23 and AT-22.
If I buy an AT-22, what do I miss of the AT-23 functions/capability?

Sten

What model name does your Kenko ring have? Does it say it is for Pentax?

Thank you all!
As I understand it, I would need to find a good A-tube on Ebay.
I was hoping that there would be a standard solution still in production,
but obviously it is not so.
I will think about this, if the gain is great enough for me to try to pursue the path.
Best regards,
Sten

I feel a little confused but also impressed by the knowledge and willingness to help in this forum.
Thank you all!
It is now clear to me that there is no simple and obvious solution.
My intention was to have a possibility to extend the range that took only a little space in the camera bag.
But perhaps I was too optimistic. :)
Best regards,
Sten
