Repair K-20 or move on?

Basically your camera does not control the aperture of the M42 lenses. What this means is, that you set the desired aperture on the lens, and then take a picture. The disadvantage of this method is that as you change the aperture on the lens (let's say, from 1.8 to 5.6) the viewfinder becomes darker, making it harder to focus.

dslr + enlarger film scanning

No, I have removed the lens from the enlarger. I focus with the bellows + moving the whole camera on the tripod. I focus on the film itself. I only use the enlarger as a comfortable light table, with nicely clamped down negatives.

Thanks! It took a while to find a good working combo. I tried first with a 28mm close-focusing lens, but it was too wide. So I ended up with the 50mm on bellows. I don't really like using the M42 bellows on the K20D, because its annoying to mount it on the camera - the protruding flash blocks the bellows from screwing into the adapter nicely. But so far I didn't find K bellows for cheap :)

While waiting for my other darkroom equipment to arrive, I wanted to digitize the negatives. I ended up using my enlarger without the lens as a negative holder + light table. Luckily you can turn it sideways, as if to project the photo on a wall. I used an M42 bellows with a 50mm Takumar at the smallest extension (2-3 cm). This gave me a comfortable working distance of about 15 cm, and the negative almost completely filled the frame. The enlarger has quite strong light, so you can easily shoot at f8.

The resulting photo is grainy, but I quite like the effect!

rusty aperture blades

I've recently got a Pentax M 100mm f4 macro. First I thought that the aperture lever spring was broken, because the lens didn't stop down. After I opened it, I realized the blades were stuck open because of rust!
Is there a chance of fixing this? The alternative is to leave it as it is, stuck open, and just live with it. The lens is otherwise in a very nice condition!

Another thing is that I'm not sure how to proceed with the disassembly. From the back there is a lens group deep in a tube with a thread - which has the aperture levers attached. There is no obvious way of removing the tube.

I didn't have lighter fluid, so I used qtips dipped into isopropanol (alcohol used for cleaning, got it from a pharmacy). It evaporates very fast, leaving no residues. Make sure no lints fall of the qtip.

Probably not the best solution, but it worked for me.

If you are feeling adventurous, the disassembly database has an entry for your lens. I cleaned my M 28mm last weekend, it took me 2-3 hours, and I'm a beginner with lenses - but not with screwdrivers :)

As the action figure is mostly 2-3 colors anyway, the BW looks better. Too bad that the tip of the "gun" is blurred, maybe go for a tripod, longer exposure (or a flash) and go for f/11 or f/16?

Thank you all for your replies! I guess then it's not suitable for my style.
I might get it eventually, but I will keep in mind that it's not so easy to just walk around with it.

I saw a mint Pentax 67 with a non-metered prism in the local shop. It came with three lenses: 105, 165 and something wider. I immediately fell in love :) I've been shooting 35mm film for a bit over a year (around 10 rolls in total), and i'd totally like to try this thing out!

However, considering the size of the body and the lenses, and the fact that I really like my film MX with the M 50mm f1.7, I'm wondering if it realistic that one just straps this camera on a shoulder (I use a sling-style strap), and take hand-held shots? I do have a tripod, but my preferred way of shooting is that I walk around and take photos of random stuff - mostly buildings and nature on the nearby parks.

I'm by no means a pro, so the only reason I'd get this is the same as for the film 35mm: full-metal body, full-metal lenses, bright viewfinder, and in general it's a joy to use. And the worse part: I've got the finance minister's approval :D

Starting a lens collection from scratch on a budget

I would do more or less the same. Although, the journey of understaning what one actually wants/needs can be interesting as well.

I used to have an inexpensive F 70-210mm zoom. Besides the relatively poor image quality at the long end, I never really liked the photos themselves (framing, the pictures always seemed to be "flat"). I sold it after I bought the 18-135. In this respect I wouldn't buy the 55-300, 'cause I know I don't really like long focal lengths. I ended up buying the M 200 f/4, but that was very cheap and I just enjoy using the M lenses :)

On the macro side, I'd go with bellows and/or reversing rings. One soon discovers that a good macro photo is not so easy to achieve, so it might be cheaper way to realise that one doesn't really like macro :)

In summary, I think that the cheap "introductory" lenses/techniques allow one to explore a territory of photography, and once one likes it, then they can buy the proper tools for it. This will be more expensive on the long run, but also one can cheaply explore!

Great job! Would you mind posting a photo of the whole setup? Also, how long does it take for you to "scan" a whole roll (36 exp)?

35mm vs 50mm usage

Those two lenses offer improved image quality over what you currently have. But is it what you want? I would probably go for something that I dont have. For more reach, I'd take the 55-300mm. Much wider is expensive, but there are great options there as well: DA 12-24mm vs Sigma and Tamron 10-24mm Comparison Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

Other than this, you could go for a fish-eye, for a macro lens (for extreme close-up)... the list is long :)

I'm not an admin here or anything, but these kind of threads usually pop up at the subforum called "Photo Sharing and Galleries", and inside that you have "Mini-Challenges, Games, and Photo Stories". If I were you, I would start a thread there, and hopefully people will join! :)

Should I upgrade my K20D to a K3?

Let me suggest you the opposite: don't. Well, depending on how much limited you feel by the K20D. I have one, and my opinion is that it's usually me who is the limiting factor, and not the camera. My photos are dull because I don't try hard to make them interesting, I always go to the same places so I can't photograph anything new, etc. Sure, you'll get usable high iso, higher resolution, etc. But the upgrade only solves one part of the equation :)

Simon, the church shot, is it a vertical stitch or a horizontal one?
I rarely manage to get a proper pano of buildings, somehow none of the projection options seem to work :)
