K3iii v K1ii

My mind has been made up for me.

An offer on Amazon has just come up. Pentax K3iii with 18-135 lens £1344. Camera only £1599 ?????

£1599 is a good price, but £255 less for taking a lens of their hands was too good to miss. Especially as there were only two left. to be delivered Friday 22nd.

Thanks for all your input and a merry Christmas

Thank you all very much for your responses. A bit for me to consider.

A high frame rate or astro tracing are not options that I would consider. I have never used either.

I bought my Spotmatic 2 in 1972. Then I bought a black and a silver MX (Both of which I still have) when they first came out in the late 1970s. I own, from new, some manual lenses (M series 20/f4, 28/f28, 50/f1.4, 100/f2.8, 200f/4 and a K series 200/f4) which all still stand up well on the K5 and K3ii. I also have a DFA 100/f2.8 macro, DFA 100/f2.8 macro WR and a Sigma 70-200/f2.8 APO DG HSM which are FF lenses.

If I went for the K-1ii I would probably buy the 28-105/f3.5-5.6 HD D FA ED DC WR or a 24-70/f2.8 HD FA ED SDM WR if I could afford it. I probably could afford it if I parted with some of the gear I don't use.

If I go with the K3iii I have all of the above plus 12-24/f4 DA ED AL, 16-45/f4 DA, 16-50 /f2.8 DA* ED AL IF SDM, Sigma 17-50mm/f2.8 EX DC OS HSM, 50/f1.8 DA, 300/f4 DA* and a DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter.

I think it may well come to the flip of a coin

K3iii v K1ii

I have a K3ii, which is still going strong and as I've given my K5 to my daughter, I am now considering a new addition.

I am torn between the K3iii and the K1ii.

I don't specialise in any particular subject, such as landscape, sport, portraits or wildlife. I take what interests me at any particular time.

Putting lenses aside for the moment and other than the obvious full frame factor, are there any strong pros and cons that I should be considering between the two?

If I update from my current version of Lightroom 4.4 to the latest subscription version will I have to update my pre-sets, libraries, etc or will these be automatically transferred into the settings on the update?

Mine was very similar: M20/f4, M2.8/f2.8, M50/f1.4, M100/f2.8 and M200mm/f4.

I've still got them and my two MX's from late 1970's - early 80's. I changed the screen on my K5 to make it easier to focus with them but sadly haven't used them for a long time. Perhaps I'll dig them out one day and post a few shots.

I've just 'loaned' mine to my daughter. Along with a DA 16-45 f4 and DA 55-300 f4-5.8 ED. She was asking me about cameras and photography in general a week or two ago so I foolishly offered it to her to try. With lockdown restrictions here, working from home, etc she hasn't had chance to get to grips with it yet but when she does I can kiss it goodbye.
Still a brilliant camera.

I've been a member since the start of 2011 but have never posted any photos. I'm giving my K5 to my daughter soon so I thought now is a good time. I hope they appear.

A great camera and I'm sure she will enjoy it.

It appears to have worked. I may end up boring you with more now ;)

K-3ii GPS Battery Drain

I've got two Pentax batteries and 3 fairly new third party batteries. All of the batteries last significantly longer in my K5 than they do in my K3II with the GPS switched on

Mine certainly runs the battery down with camera off but the GPS left on. Sometimes when I first switch the camera on all three bars on the battery indicator show up as full but after a few seconds, sometimes, it will show only one or die completely.

I've still got my original M20mm f4, M28mm f2.8, M50mm f1.4, M100mm f2.8 and M200 f4 all bought around 40 years ago for my two MX's (that I've also still got).

Wouldn't part with any of them. Especially the M20 and the M100

Thanks guys. I'll try the DNG converter when I get a bit of free time.

Does Lightroom 6 recognise PEF files?

PEF & Lightroom - HELP

I had a few settings issues on holiday and didn't have the manual or regular internet access to help me sort it out. I'm not sure how but the RAW file format on my K3II changed from DNG to PEF.

I use Lightroom 4. I haven't upgraded as I don't want to be held to ransom by Adobe. When I started loading the memory cards a few hundred photos show up as PEF and Lightroom 4 doesn't seem to support them.

Any advice would be appreciated

Also the map for the gps tagging is now inaccessible. It reads as offline.

Lightroom. Help

I am using Lightroom 4. I'm not sure what happened but I'd just finished processing some photos and a larger grid with a few photos came up in the middle of the screen. I'm not sure how I got back to the main grid view but when I did all of the little icons indicating whether the photos have been cropped, straightened, tagged to a map, etc, have all disappeared.

They still appear in the filmstrip type view along the bottom of the screen but not in the main grid.

Anyone have any ideas?

Are K lenses better than their M and A counterparts?

Yes, of course there is a physical difference. I was referring to what the lens does. I cannot see any difference when comparing the results of them side by side.

I've got a K200:f4 and a M200:f4. Only one comparison but I would say that, in my opinion, there is no difference. One is not better than the other.

With my two MX's I always had my M20/4, M50/1.4 and M100/2.8. I had a few others but those were the 3 that I used the most.

I've actually still got the cameras and lenses. All bought new in the late seventies and early eighties.
