I remember that when I tuned AF I observed some focus shift when the lens was stopped down. So I calibrated focus for optimal performance at f7.1 or something.
Note that using this lens requires a good technique, it took me 6 month to get tack sharp shots in the field. I used bean bag to stabilize the lens and electric remote control.
I have sold the lens to go Nilon mainly to get much lighter lenses - the 600f4 FL series weights half the weight of the Pentax ! I now use mainly 400 f2.8 and 800 f5.6 lenses, both are sharp and usable wide open but have their optimal performance when stopped down 1 stop.

Hi,
I have used this lens during several years; before selling it last year to switch to Nikon.
I sold mine to a canadian member of this forum.
I have written a review of this lens on this forum. Wide open, the lens is a bit soft for sure. Don't forget also that the depth of field is very, very narrow and you need AF tuning.
The lens sweet spot is at f8. More modern lenses reach their optimum less stopped down, but don't forget that it is an old optical design here - back in the 90s

I don't understand; I put a 50 f1.2 in very good condition on sale on this forum for 600 euros and didn't catch your attention. As we are - for the moment - in the EU community there is no custom fees

As for today, Sony has released a FF BSI sensor but not an APS-C BSI sensor; we can expect the Sony FF BSI sensor in the Pentax K1, but the APS-C flagship ?
With this new sensor, I think that the photon efficiency - ie the number of photons that produces an electron in the photocell - largely exceed 50 % - which was the performance of the K5ii - and reach 80 %, which gives very little room for improvement - apart fom removing the color filters as Nicolas said

All images shot with Pentax, mainly 600 f4, before June 2015.
Cameras, K5iis and K3. Exif data gives you the lens and camera.
Nikon since June 2015, with 800 f5.6 FL and 400 f2.8 FL and D810 full frame (36 Mpixels). A lot of money invested in gear.
Of course recent Nikon lenses are the best but I invested 30 000 euros in Nikon gear this summer.
I have made very good shots with Pentax all these years, with a stuff that costed 8000 euros bought second hand (FA*600 f4, FA*300 f2.8 + K5iis or K3), 1/4th of the Nikon
Previously I used a A*300 f2.8 + 2X converter and 1,7 AF converter, but the results were not comparable with what I got from the FA* 600 f4 or FA*300 f2.8. For a compact portable lens I also had a FA*400 f5.6.
The advantage of the Pentax gear, I have kept it 5 years and sold it at the same price or even more than the price I have paid for it.
Also note that in France birds are oftne much more shy than in other countries were they are not hunted, so it is more difficult to get close.
Definitively forget 2X converters and even more stacked converters !

Hi,
I have had shooting experience with most of Pentax long lenses, including :
A*300, with 1,4 X-L TC, 1,7X TC AF, 2X-L TC
FA*300 f2.8 with Pentax 1,4 RC
FA*400 f5.6
FA*600 f4 with 1,4X L TC (manual focus) and 1,4 RC
A*1200 f8
My work can be seen on various post on this forum and also on flickr here https://www.flickr.com/photos/jpgoube/albums/72157658770515378
(The pictures before June 2015 are all from Pentax long lenses)
I have also written reviews for these lenses on thos forum.
To sum up, the best lens I have owned is undoubtly the FA*600 f4. It gives reach, image quality, fast and precise AF. It has to be stopped down to f8 to get best quality, though. and weights a lot. It works well with the 1,4 RC, with moderate image quality degradation at the pixel level.
The FA*300 f2.8 is a good lens, but not so good with the 1,4 X RC, as it amplifies purple fringing of this lens. Without TC it needs to be stopped down to f5.6 - f8 to give best results, and here it really shines
I would skip manual focus lenses, and 1,7 AF-TC. It is very difficult to achieve precise focus with long lenses, and AF is not only fast but much more accurate than eye on the focusing screen.
Avoid 2X TC, even on premium quality, 12 000 $ lenses from Nikon it gives poor results
I have no experience with the DA560, as I decided recently to go the Nikon route for long lenses and, as a consequence, sold all my long lenses. To give you an order of magnitude, I have sold my FA*600 f4 for 5000 euros, and the 300 for 2500 euros. Both were in very good condition. The issue of these lenses on the 2nd hand market is that many have been intensively used by pros and have suffer from this intensive use. There is also very little possibility, if none, to get spare parts.
Hope this helps

According to Nikon rumours, the new processor - evolution of fusjitsu milbaut, shared by Pentax and Nikon - will have 15 fps with 20 Mpix sensor.
You also know that Sony has released the first BSI 42 Mpix FF sensor in the Sony alpha, and according to DXO that's near a full stop better dynamic range than the "old" 36 Mpix sensor.
So the Pentax FF should embedd this new 42 Mpix sensor with 7 fps. 42 Mpix at 7 fps is the same number of pixels to process that 15 fps at 20 Mpix (15*20 = 300, 7 * 42 = 294)

I have bought 2 of these stupid huge lenses and I'm very happy with them. If Pentax had released a comparable lens, ie an upgrade of the FA*600 f4, instead of this stupid DA560 f5.6, I wouldn't have switch to Nikon recently

Bof... I had it and sold it to get the 15 limited.
Flare resistance was poor and to get good sharpness I had to stop it down a lot. Plus it weights a lot.
Go for the DA 15 or the 12-24 zoom...
If you are interested I'm selling my DA15 on this forum cause I'm switching brand, It is one of the lenses I'll miss with Nikon...

One stop of DR above 400 Iso over the already good D810 is an achievement.
There will be also improvement in vignetting characteristics of lenses (because the photoreceptor is closer to the microlens). See dpreview home page...

Just saying, it is a pity to have such a wonderfull sensor and not making the (small) effort to have a lossless compression. There are a lot of lossless compression code available on the internet.

I has been told that, to give an advantage to Sony camera business, Pentax (and Nikon too) has to wait 6 months after the release of the sensor. During this 6 month period, Sony camera division has the exclusivity.

The sensational 42 Mpix BSI sensor will not be available to Pentax at that time. May be it will be an official announcement with true prototype (not a 3D printout) and definitive specs ?
