I've trimmed a number of off-topic posts in order to put the thread back where it belongs. There should not be any confusion about the purpose for the thread, and discussion of other equipment and manufacturers is definitely outside the scope of this one. Please refrain from turning a Pentax price watch post into a general discussion of cameras. Anyone is welcome to begin a more appropriate discussion thread for it, but this one is not it.

I think the point of the thread is simply to alert folks to the Pentax Trade-Up incentive deal for the K-3 Mark III. Some folks will take advantage of it, many will not.

Sounds like you're not a prospective buyer for a K-3 Mark III, but some folks likely will take advantage of the trade-up incentive.

It's great that you found a camera/lens combo within your budget that satisfies your shooting needs.

Since its release on the market, the K-3 Mark III has garnered a number of positive reviews. In particular, the AF capability and performance seems to be very good and significantly improved over previous Pentax cameras. Although I haven't seen any detailed direct comparisons with other systems such as the D500, anecdotal accounts are positive. Unfortunately, it's too new to be widely available on the used market yet.

Are you seriously comparing a used 6 year old camera and lens to a brand new (top of the line) body and brand new lens?

What a joke. It's fine to be displeased but what are you expecting, miracles?

I texted Camera Canada last night. They don't want my camera but they'll give me the $250 CAD rebate, so if I want I could sell it myself.

They said the program has ben really popular, whatever that means. There is almost no chance I was going to buy the camera anyway, even if I got the price down to around y $2000 limit, the tax was still going to make the final cost $260 over that. I would have thought it was a great deal if I though I needed a camera, but, Im just exploring my options and this one sounded promising.

One of the reviews was done buy a guy who regularly shoots a D500. He said it's just as good as a D500, and he didn't use astro-tracer, Pixel shift, or take advantage of IBIS. He actually said he really liked the camera, but not enough to go through a system switch. He said there wasn't enough to inspire a switch, but for Pentax users it was a no brainer. So who am I going to believe, a paid reviewer who's shot with both cameras, or some guy on the internet?

The big question in my mind is how the does someone actually form an opinion like that. The psychology of denial has always fascinated me.

After the rebates the K-3iii is almost the same price as a D500. Anyone who owns Pentax lenses would be a fool to pass on this, if they need a camera. And compared to swapping systems? Insane.

I almost pulled the trigger anyway... but seriously, I do so well with my K-3 I'm having trouble imagining paying for an upgrade. Even at this price.

The negativity here is enough to drive people away. Time for a break.

We've had a wonderful winter here in SE Texas with plenty of blue skies and daily highs in the '70s F, and today I drove down to Surfside Beach - a barrier island - to enjoy a couple of cold beers and some warm, 80F sun on the raised deck of a bar I habituate a few times a year. Since I've photographed Surfside ad nauseam, I planned no photography but nevertheless grabbed my small LX100 which I've hardly touched since I got it for Christmas. Sitting on the sun-soaked deck with cold bottle in hand, it decided to snap a couple of shots of the roadster from my high vantage point - something I've done from the same spot at the same bar with various roadsters over the years.

Debug focus adjustment various pentax models.

Please - if you have first-hand experience making these adjustments to other models and Firmware versions (they're all different) would you join me in compiling a directory that will save a lot of heartache and consternation? :pps - feel free to copy any part of the following that you feel helps and is applicable. Mike.

FINE FOCUS ADJUSTMENT. K10D Firmware Version 1.0 (It worked for me.) This is done in the camera, not on individual lenses and will apply to all lenses used on the camera. (I think perhaps it shifts the sensor.)
As you make focus adjustments take more test shots until you’re satisfied.
(I couldn’t reach a volcanic cone on the horizon with a 600mm mirror lens. Now I can focus on it BEFORE I hit the stop at the Infinity symbol. Perfect! Took + 280um to do it though. Now my collection of lenses from 18mm to 600mm, manual and Auto-focus, all work!)
DEBUG MODE. (Secret mode – you won’t find it in the camera manual.)
TO ENTER : These entry instructions are peculiar to the PENTAX K10D, V1.0 (& V1.1 which I don’t have.) Entry route was changed after that. And kept secret. Other models use different routes and firmware versions for entry. They’re secret too. But they’re being written about.
FIRMWARE VERSION 1.0 (Others say Version 1.1 is needed.)
BEGINNING - Ensure a fully charged battery is in the camera. Apparently damage can be caused by the battery running out and the camera turning off while in DEBUG MODE. Start with the camera turned off.
1 Hold “Playback” button and “Enter” while turning camera ON. (Playback is the little blue arrowhead.) Now the camera’s current Firmware version shows. If that’s all you want to know just keep taking photos. But to continue -
2 Within 5 seconds press Fn > Fn > Info > Menu. Secret Menu shows with DEBUG MODE showing.
3 Change DEBUG MODE “” to (Disable/Enable)
4 Click “OK”. The screen goes black.
5 Click MENU. Rec. Mode shows.
6 Click RIGHT > RIGHT. Set-up shows.
7 Click “Up” (on the control ring) “Test Mode” screen shows.
8 Select “AF TEST”.
9 Click RIGHT. “AF Test” menu shows.
10 Select “Focus Corr”(ect.) Focus can now be moved nearer the camera in ( + ) increments of 10 um (um = Micron – 1,000 microns per millimetre) or further away by ( - ) 10 um increments. (Adjustment by 200 um is not uncommon.) Here’s where the ‘trial & error’ begins. Your first adjustment might not be enough because you’re only guessing. Default setting is zero (0) um but if it’s at a different value you’re in there to change it anyway. As you add, or subtract, that action shows but the central setting won’t show, even though it takes effect, until you come back to the same screen at which time you’ll see the new total adjustment. The camera can be used normally while in Debug Mode (just ½ press the shutter button) but –
11 To turn Debug Mode off - start from the beginning but at Step 3 select Debug (Disable).
12 Click OK or turn the camera off - DONE!
