The first camera I ever got to play around with was my mother's Instamatic, I don't know the model, I googled Instamatic models and the 404 looks like it but my mom's used 110 film and the internet says the 404 used 126.
The first camera I ever owned was a Kodak disc camera that I got for my birthday, I thought it was my 10th birthday but the internet says the disc camera came out in 1982 so it must have been my 12th birthday. I know the disc camera was the new thing when I got it.
My first 35mm camera was a K1000 that I saved up two months to buy in 1985.
My first digital was a Kodak DC40, not sure when I bought it but it was a good while after they discontinued it.
My first dslr is a Pentax K-x, which is supposed to arrive Tomorrow.

Maybe I will look around to buy some of them back, I noticed a lot of older lenses are nicely priced on eBay. I still remember how to do all of that without the camera helping you along, and even just letting the camera pick the shutter speed will be a big help. One of the things I've hated about the point and shoots I've used on and off the last couple years is how little control they give you over exposure, although the last one I had (an Olympus Stylus 1010) was actually pretty good at that better than the previous one which had almost no control other than changing the Ev (eV, whichever?). Still it will be nice to have a camera that lets me be in control. Also, being a night-owl I really like the things I've heard about the K-x's low light quality, the Olympus was so-so and the previous one was almost useless at night outside of the flash range. I downloaded the K-x manual and have been reading it while I'm waiting (just got my tracking number from Adorama and I'm scheduled to get it on Tuesday! And Tuesday and Wednesday are my days off :) )
Can anyone recommend a good book on digital photoprocessing, maybe one written for people who have experiance with physical darkrooms? I've never shot color film (other than snapshots on a Kodak disc camera I had when I was a kid and one color slide project we did in photography class), all of my color experiance is with point-and-shoot digital cameras. So I know nothing about color film processing and in fact don't really have a very good eye for color. So if a book was specifically about digital black-and-white photo processing that would be good. I would like to get some experiance with color photography, I'm sure that an "eye for color" is something that can be learned with practice at least to some extent. I've seen some really nice black-and-white digital photography on the internet.
Sorry for the long posts, I'm just really excited.

Hi,
I used to have a very active photography hobby; I took several years of photography in high school in Delaware. My old camera was a Pentax K1000 that I bought in 1985 (I think that half the students in my photography class bought that camera, and it was a very nice and reliable.) Over the years as I left high school and started working long hours my photographic hobby kind of fell to the wayside. I sold all my darkroom equipment and finally even my lens and my old camera, and while I still have taken pictures from time to time with cheap digital point-and-shoots it wasn't anything serious.
So I have been living in Florida now for going on four years, and I'm finally in a financial situation that I don't have to work six or seven days a week, and I finally want to take up an old hobby of mine, exploring. I planned to do a lot of that when I moved down here, but my pay dropped big time and I just never seemed to have the time because I was constantly working to pay my bills. Whenever I had a day off I pretty much just slept. I've been down here almost four years and I still live a twenty minute drive from the farthest south I've ever been in my life! I work 10 hour shifts, so I have three days off, and if I don't have to pick up overtime I should have plenty of time to explore places I haven't been before.
Exploring to me has always been intimately linked to photography, so I've ordered a Pentax K-x. It should get here next week, and I'm really excited. It looked to me like the best camera for the price, and I have to admit that my affection for my old K1000 played a big part in my decision as well. I wish now that I hadn't sold all of my lenses; of course all of them were manual lenses but they were really nice lenses and I believe they would still work in the K-x, just without having access to auto functions?
A little about myself, I'm forty years old and I work on the graveyard shift at the front desk at Disney's Contemporary Resort. I transfered with my old employer four years ago, but never showed up at the office because after having a few days off I realized how much I hated working there. So I went to work at Walt Disney World and never regretted it, although it was a big adjustment pay-wise going from $17/hr to $7/hr. I've finally finished paying off my old bills from Delaware, and can live on what I'm making although I still have to watch my money very closely, especially if I want to stop working so much overtime.
